i think the most sympathetic points of gamzee relate to reading him as a stereotype of black men, or a "minstre|" (controversial but i'm sure i dont have to rehash it to you, imo it's just ambiguous enough specifically because he is a troll and not a human) so isn't it like kinda unnecessary to say in-universe he did nothing wrong anyways. even if only for mixing up doylist-watsonian lines too much
by now I don't think it ought to be controversial to point out that Gamzee is written in antiblack caricature. among people who know what they're actually reading, the disagreeing camps at this stage are divided more along the lines of whether this means Gamzee is to be read as "coded Black", which is its own distinct conversation worthy of its own oxygen separate to this.
I'm kind of with you in that I don't really see the appeal in reassessing characters on a Watsonian level for purely Doylist reasons. like, another example is when people think that Eridan was, say, poorly represented as a closeted queer kid subject to the pressures of a patriarchal society (or whatever it is they might believe), so they decide that the stuff Eridan did wasn't actually that bad, or that it wasn't his fault, or whatever - when it's quite obvious from just reading the text itself or following up on the author's commentary on his own work that this isn't the case?
it just sounds like you don't like the story the character is in. which is fine. you can like another story or another character. but at the same time it's a very firmly held belief of mine that the author's intention is not God and that you're allowed to develop an equally-correct interpretation outside of what the writer might have been thinking or saying when they created the text. so in that sense it's not a crime to imagine a More Sympathetic Gamzee. that's just not really the thing I was talking about either the thing I was talking about is this new thing where people act like Gamzee was somehow leagues more sympathetic in hs1 than he was in the epilogues which slandered him without precedent. which just isn't true

why is the new line of revisionist Gamzee analysis always like "he was just a funny murderer in hs1 before they made him a predatory bastard in the epilogues" like he wasn't beating on his woman for 3 straight years in that webcomic. I know there are sympathetic reasons to reassess Gamzee as a character but it's hard to take this shit seriously when it's literally founded on forgetting a big part of the comic

the bit about the Crocker family tradition of taxidermying dead relatives always kind of stuck out to me as a weird oddity considering all the implication suggests it originated with Meenah, a troll, and a notable point is made that trolls do not care at all for the bodies of their dead. and then it clicked for me very recently that it's Meenah who tries to preserve her friends' souls by killing them during the scratch, and it's Meenah who keeps attempting to resurrect the troll race after their extinction even when she's given another planet to rule over entirely. attempting to preserve what she's lost is literally a specific character quirk of Meenah's
the fact that Equius is a pacifist and Nepeta is a huntress is just an interesting bit of nuance to the Lord English thing for me.
