the thing about 2x72 Clay and Dust is that like. It really ruined me for having any patience for people who are overly cautious or passive. Like, yeah, you should be thoughtful, but also, really, if you're not willing to break your pact and go without your core abilities for almost 4 episodes maybe you should, as the kids say, get good.

the thing is, obviously this isn't true of all DMs, but Matt (at least when he's on the ball) and Brennan are very much DMs who go by "you get what you give" which to be clear I think is a good thing. there's a reason Fjord gets a new patron and a vestige and +2 strength and it's because he did that degree of work, from seeking out potential new patrons to telling Uk'otoa to fuck off. It's the same reason why Tyranny has a cool knife; it's because she established early on that she both cares deeply about other people (rescuing Teor, her genuine devotion to Wick) and finds herself drawn to hurting them (stealing the knife) and admits it. It's also true purely on the PC-PC level! There's a reason Liam's characters often have rich relationships with most of the rest of the party and it's because he makes sure to try to run scenes with them! The takeaway here isn't "blow up your character's life" or "don't use your powers"; it's "if you want interesting things to happen to your character, you better be doing something interesting."

Something mentioned nowhere in this post that I have just learned from googling: these guys were not Ye Olde Medieval Dandies. They were 15th-16th century mercenaries. Pretty hardcore, too. They were exempt from sumptuary laws (ie the rules that said you couldn’t wear certain colours or cloth or styles) and apparently their response to that was technicolour thotpants.

I was complaining earlier about costuming in both “historical” settings and in fantasy/scifi. This is exactly what I mean when I say a knowledge of actual history would enrich the conceptual creative palette for things like “hardcore mercenary outfits.”

I think what’s wrong with a lot of people is they’re not eating breakfast. They’re starting the day with at most 16 ounces of milk with espresso and riding on that until lunch time. What they don’t understand is eating breakfast helps absorb all the excess yellow bile that builds up overnight when they sleep and makes them angry. It’s basic humor balancing
