As Pride Month comes to an end, I just want to remind you that July is Disability Pride Month and there's a flag and everything!
Charcoal Grey: Mourning for people who have died due to ableist violence, abuse, suicide, and illness
Red Stripe: Physical disabilities
Gold Stripe: Neurodiversity
Blue Stripe: Emotional and psychiatric disabilities
Green Stripe: Sensory disabilities
White Stripe: Undiagnosed and invisible disabilities
Recent discourse reminds me of that cult indoctrination trick that's often used to weed out more difficult marks early on, where they tell you all that you aren't allowed to eat rice on Tuesdays and then if you protest they go "wow SOMEBODY likes rice a little much huh" as if you're the fucking weirdo who cares too much about how much rice is consumed between Monday and Wednesday instead of them.
And this forces you to decide whether your autonomy matters to you more than the approval of the group - while they'll still act like you're on thin ice either way, if you give in at this point they know you're theirs forever, because now they've established a foothold, you've shown a moral weakness, which they will brand you with so it can be used against you in the future ("hey RICE-addict here doesn't want help break into the city records office") to force you to double-down and isolate you further.
And if instead you do decide to push back further, after your abrupt departure from the group ("You're seriously leaving us over RICE?!? Seriously?") and subsequent ostracism, you can then be used as a demonstration to the others who were more pliable, of how the outgroup is full of people like you who are obsessed with violating the No-Tuesday-Rice rule to the point where they'll abandon all their friends, who cared so much for them, so it clearly isn't an arbitrary restriction, you're the kind of monster these rules are intended to protect them from, thus all the other wise and esoteric precepts of the charismatic leader are implied to be equally justified.
This isn't just for cults either! Shitty partners, bosses, friends - they all do variants of this where if you kick back the first time they make an unreasonable request, it proves you weren't ever committed since you'd let such a small thing ruin everything. And of course, if it's the third or the tenth unreasonable thing they ask of you, it's SUCH A SMALL THING to be a deal-breaker at this late point in your relationship!
the thing that sucks is that people love saying sleep early is good etc etc and yeah it is. I've seen some benefits before. but I think it sucks to ignore that late night is the only time with any freedom. I think it sucks to not acknowledge the dread in waking up and it's a work day again
"fast travel to work" is a great way of putting it. because a lot of people say "but the less time you have at night, the more time you have during the morning!" but your morning is like, getting emotionally ready to get off of bed, taking your meds, taking a shower, making and eating breakfast, going to work, etc. and waking up early will just make you do that stuff early. it won't give you more time to rest, it won't give you more time to talk to anyone, it won't inherently give you anything at all even. sometimes saving up 30-60 minutes before work is just kind of a nothing amount of time. it's like saying extended lunch break is free time. it's not. just because you're not actively working doesn't mean you're not giving your time to your employer

Happy disability pride month to severely disabled people who are housebound/bedbound
happy disability pride month to severely disabled people who don’t have access to proper treatment or medical equipment, and are stuck without care that would ease symptoms or make their life easier
happy disability pride month to severely disabled people who won’t be getting better, and who will be getting worse, or who will be dying due to their conditions
happy disability pride month to severely disabled people with photosensitivity who can’t look at screens for long, and feel even more isolated by not being able to interact with much the disability community, even online
happy disability pride month to severely disabled people who aren’t happy to be severely disabled, but are happy to be alive
can i be so honest rn
as someone who has been fat for most of their life i understand why so many people hate the push for GLP1's for weight loss. i feel for the diabetics who have a new and unfair struggle to acquire their medication because of people who just want to be a bit skinnier. i also wish the body neutrality movement hasn't completely collapsed on itself and i feel sick seeing the new skinny standard that's seemingly pushed everywhere (especially in ads and social media).
HOWEVER. i have also struggled with disordered eating habits for more than a decade. and i have been diagnosed with binge eating disorder in the past couple years. i have been working closely with a dietician at an accredited medical weight loss facility for almost 3 years now.
and starting wegovy has been *genuinely* life changing for me. since starting the medication my binge episodes have gone from 1-3 a *week* to 1-2 a *month.* my internal food noise, guilt and shame around eating, all of that has gone way down. this is literally the first time i have felt in control of myself in a healthy way, instead of the extreme restrict cycles i used to fall into in my late teens/early 20's.
and i know im not the only one in this scenario. the main reason my dietician encouraged me to start a GLP1 was because she and her colleagues have seen the medication help others with binge eating disorder or similar issues.
and i *really* wish we weren't constantly ignored in the GLP1 debate.
also ps: fuck you Cigna for not covering my medication at all and forcing me to pay fully out of pocket even though i have a literal dietician and a binge eating disorder diagnosis just because i wouldn't take part in your bullshit "wellness" app that was extremely triggering from my aforementioned extreme restriction cycle days
medicine! despite the obstacles, we continue to advance and treat/cure more diseases than ever before. while i wish advertising for GLP1s would die with fire, they truly revolutionized care for people with Type II diabetes. last year they came out with a treatment for Huntington's disease that slows progression significantly (it was previously untreatable). a drug being tested for Alzheimers might be able to regrow teeth??? more and more surgeries are able to be done laproscopically, reducing recovery time significantly (tubal ligation for example). PCOS has been renamed and redefined to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome to more accurately reflect the main symptoms (lots of people don't have cysts and thus got dismissed by doctors), and they have a blood test for it now.
frogs! thanks to tumblr's own @markscherz and others, we keep finding new frog species!
treatment for cat kidneys! it's not widely available yet as they complete testing but Japanese researcher Toru Miyazaki has created an injection that can protect cat kidneys, which could let cats that would otherwise die of kidney complications live twice as long. which is a lot of cats, sadly.

I suspect in the heart of all people is a yaoi-shaped hole and in there fits precisely one shitty slash pairing from a crap story.
anyhow for me this is Twink Lex Luthor / Jerry Deathstroke from My Adventures with Superman.
Boymoder and her mall ninja BF
no one cares that you shave your legs because of sensory issues shut the fuck up forever
really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.
also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
Possibly my spiciest take is that it's actually good to have people you respect and like that have some dogshit takes.
I think part of what is making young people lonelier, in discussing why they're increasingly isolated, is that they're so afraid of meeting someone who doesn't hold their same beliefs, and instead of being just core beliefs it is kinda ancillary shit.
It's actually okay to disagree even on social topics! Even on some political ones! But I mean, online you can start with "i love this mutual but they have a really bad/uninformed opinion about x media"
I know this is IMMEDIATELY going to be taken in bad faith, and yes babygirl, you are so right, I DO want you to go make best friends with both the KKK grand wizard AND your nearest nazi leader.
But seriously, as someone who has spent two decades doing community organization: finding ways to connect with different people is so so so important. There are people i follow here who ate 80% smart and their brain falls out of their head 20% of the time and that is GOOD FOR MY MENTAL ECOSYSTEM AND GOOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO BE A PERSON
LET'S ALL GO PISS ON THE POOR
It’s also good to assume you probably are the friend whose brain falls out 20% of the time.
We all have blind spots, assumptions, and dogshit take from time to time. They can’t all be winners.

Consider:
OP: This is the first time I've seen the Yellow River's sediment discharge with my own eyes.
There's a Chinese meme that the Yellow River doesn't need rituals to present sacrifices because if it's hungry it'll come onto the shore and eat the sacrifices itself.
#some netizens also say chinese people like unification because only a powerful unified dynasty can survive the yellow river and sometimes #also the chang jiang when they decide to flood and change directions and kill and displace millions #also only large dynasties have the resources to do hydroengineering to try and control the yellow river #yellow river be like: if you don't hydroengineer you die #but if you do you might also die heehee #“we call these our mother rivers not because they are gentle but because we are too scared” tags on above post

@mikkeneko
what in the
oh my god??
People talk about how the Great Lakes are deadly because they are uncaring, but the Yellow River is literally out to get everyone.
The Great Lakes are uncaring, don't care whether you live or die, ambivalent, pay no attention to you.
The Yellow River cares. Deeply. About you, specifically. And your death. And being the cause of it. It notices you and your intentions. You've been warned. Exercise your hubris accordingly.
