the fact that 8pm is only 3 hours after 5pm is fucking insane. we have to do something about this.

Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost
this post will find you when it needs to find you.
just some facts: you are loved. you are not alone. you are valuable. you are worthy of good things. you are deserving of self love and forgiveness. iโm glad youโre still here.
for all of you:
You gotta read and watch some old books and films that arenโt 100% modern politically correct. Iโm not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.
Also, more often than you might think, theyโre not actually promoting bigotry so much as โdidnโt consider all the implications of somethingโ or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.
Kill the censor in your head.
When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.
and this shit's important. Media from the past tells us how people from the past acted and thought and behaved.
Plus, a lot of these media pieces were socially acceptable and/or progressive for their time. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, while it contains a lot of words and ideas that are offensive now, was very progressive for its time. The book is a statement piece for how a young man who's grown up in a racist environment, with no words to explain himself other than racist and bigoted ones, decides that the whole system is shit and he's not going to follow those rules any more. So not reading or engaging with it because it uses the n-word a lot really misses the point.
i was on the way to the movies & i saw an old guy with a piece of wood over his shoulders. it was huge -- a pole several feet long with a kind of wide fan at the end of it. and i said "what the hell is that?" and he looked at me and had this kind of ear to ear grin, and he said "what do you mean 'what the hell is that'?" and he sat back on his heels, still with that big smile like the sun spilling from the underside of a cloud and waited for me to answer and i said "i mean i don't know why you're walking around with that thing, whatever it is." and he laughed and put down his pole and kinda clapped me on the shoulder. "can i get you a drink?" he said. and i said "no, the show's in ten minutes," and he said "oh? what are you seeing?" and i said "christopher nolan's odyssey, i'm pretty excited," and he sighed and picked up his oar and kept walking.
I donโt get the joke :( someone help me
in some versions of the Odysseus legend, Odysseus leaves Ithaca and is supposed to wander the world carrying a ship's oar until he finds a place where no one knows what it is. here, he encounters someone who doesn't recognize it, but since the narrator is going to see a movie version of the Odyssey, that anonymity can't last & he has to keep wandering.

"While those working at private companies can at least earn a little money, they face possible punishment if they refuse, from being denied family visits to being sent to higher-security prisons, which are so dangerous that the federal government filed a lawsuit four years ago that remains pending [note: article is from 2024], calling the treatment of prisoners unconstitutional.
Though they make at least $7.25 an hour, the state siphons 40% off the top of all wages and also levies fees, including $5 a day for rides to their jobs and $15 a month for laundry.
Turning down work can jeopardize chances of early release in a state that last year granted parole to only 8% of eligible prisoners โ an all-time low, and among the worst rates nationwide โ though that number more than doubled this year after public outcry."
No state has a longer, more profit-driven history of contracting prisoners out to private companies than Alabama.
The whole "we're a diverse company, Susan from accounting is a goth" thing doesn't even hit as a meme for me. I've worked government and corporate IT, and in my experience a lot of work sites will in fact cite the fact that they don't make the desk jockeys cover their tattoos or remove their nasal piercings during work hours as proof of their commitment to diversity. It's actually, genuinely Like That.
look i WISH more horror movies were just the directors thinly disguised fetish. instead we got all these horror movies that are just undisguised reflections of culturally hegemonic values and anxieties. like if we got some weird fetishes up in here it would probably add some variety thats all im saying.

please dont vape your blueberry ice flavor around my kid. we are raising him on marlboro reds exclusively.
horrible pathetic showing from every site i've tried to use to access this article by bypassing the nyt's paywall but a cis lesbian wrote a guest article about how children shouldn't resort to cutting off their family if they don't respect their queer identities and it is honestly incredible how evergreen that onion headline continues to be day by day
like come on. what is this garbage. aside from the fact that apparently the author of this article did no investigation into the actual numbers of this phenomenon, just instead giving a vague "this phenomenon *looks* like it might be increasing, but whoooo knows to what extent!" about it (something we've seen happen in journalism before), just saying "therapists are probably doing this!" with no real source except for like. some therapist's blog where she gives the reader self-evaluation questions about how abusive their family environments are/were, is a really fundamentally bad way to position it. if children, especially young queer children, are learning that their family might be abusive from a therapist's blog, that's not them getting a solution from a therapist. that's them finding out from an external source that their family is fucking abusive -- which they should be able to have the freedom to do and to choose how they want to respond!!!
I DO NOT THINK, IN AN ARTICLE ABOUT YOUNG QUEER PEOPLE BREAKING FREE FROM FAMILIAL ABUSE, WE SHOULD BE CALLING WHAT THEY ARE DOING "SELF-MUTILATION". HELLO. ARE WE HEARING OURSELVES. WHY ARE WE BLOWING THAT DOG WHISTLE.
It's important to note that Liberties, the journal that Celeste Marcus (the author of the piece) edits for has platformed Sohrab Ahmari, one of those on the intellectual forefront of this current moment in political transmisogyny, three times. She has never once thought about protecting any LGBT+ person but herself, much less any trans woman. This is an evil woman and her cohorts are everywhere in the Washington DC beltway environment that makes up where a ton of the political publishing industry ends up recruiting from. This woman is bourgeoisie first before she is LGBT+, and she's more than willing to do the work of social reactionaries to stay in the socioeconomic class.
