Anis are bizarre, coal-black cuckoos with long floppy tails and unique, curiously tall, flattened bills. Groove-billed occurs in a variety of open and semi-open habitats in tropical lowlands and foothills, typically staying low in shrubs and grasses. Gregarious and not particularly graceful; usually seen crashing around awkwardly in small groups.
groove billed anis are a hilarious cuckoo situation where they ended up laying their eggs in one anotherâs nests instead of anyone elseâs. they hang out together in groups of up to five pairs until a nest gets built (sometimes by committee, sometimes they just hang around hopefully until someone does it all on their own) then they start sneaking over and laying an egg in at a time. the females who lay for the first time will sometimes flip prior eggs out of the nest like âoh i KNOW this one isnât mine! away it goesâ but eventually everyoneâs laid a couple eggs in there and is stuck with the mutual hostage situation. then they take turns incubating until all the kids hatch and everyone pitches in on feeding them, because no one knows which of the kids are theirs so they all might as well.
they also like to do a team handshake where they clump up and mutually make a low bubbling noise together, to signal group affiliation. go team!
Also their eggs are incredibly beautiful. Theyâre a very pretty blue color, but covered by a white chalky outer layer that is easily scratched off, so they end up in various stages of in-between.

they are sexually mature at ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS OLD.
their (live!) young gestate for. wait for it. eight to eighteen (??) YEARS. can have up to 10 at a time. good grief.
longest lifespan of any vertebrate, up to five hundred years
toxic flesh
has giant eyes but is usually blind because of a weird little crustacean that's evolved to live on and eat their eyes. this doesn't seem to bother them much.
lives in deep cold water and has the lowest swim speed and tail-beat frequency for its size across all fish species. just generally lives life in extreme slow motion
largest genome of any shark
eats everything including moose and polar bears
ma'am you are delightfully strange and I'm privileged to share a planet with you

Okay, so we know using a Sharpie/Marker for complicated tattoos day-of for a con is a PAIN, so hereâs a quick tutorial on the best way Iâve gotten success for really clean and convincing temporary tattoos for cosplay!
First things first, I would recommend getting this Silhouette tattoo paper. It comes with 2 - 8.5âł x 11âł sheets that are printable on Ink Jet printers for only $7! It comes with thorough instructions on how to use the paper, but Iâll give a quick summary.
Create your tattoo in the program of your choice. I used Illustrator, but you could also print any PDF or JPG â just make sure the design is mirrored when you print it!! (Iâd also recommend printing extras for multi-day use or mistakes when cutting!)
After the ink dries, add the clear adhesive sheet (comes with the Silhouette kit) over the top and smooth out any air bubbles.
Then (and this is really important!) cut our your tattoo as close to the edges as possible! You donât want the design to fall apart, but the more white edges you leave, the more shiny adhesive will show up on your skin.
Now youâre ready to apply your temporary tattoo! Peel off the clear sheet, lay the tattoo facedown on your skin, and use a damp rag to wet the entire paper back. Then peel the paper off and the design is left behind!
Use makeup powder (personally I like the colorless powder so not to deaden the brilliance of the tattoo itself) and soften the shiny surface.
Go take pictures of your cosplay and have fun! It should last all day at a con (and then some!)~

My brother saved this document and everytime he gets angry at our neighbours for being loud he prints it to their wireless printer and you can hear the wife shout âWhy the fuck would you print this AGAIN?!â to her son.
1. If you were wondering, you can type the numbers in the works cited into google and they appear to be medical journal articles about using medical imaging to detect and diagnose a rare form of Gastritis.
2. Please enjoy the offical powerpoint presentation of this paper at an academic conference by the original author, complete with Q&A:
When I saw this cross my dash tonight, I smiled and thought âyess, the chicken chicken chicken post, I get to reblog it again and inflict it on all of the people that have followed me since last timeâ, and then I scrolled down more and to my utter delight there was A VIDEO, needless to say my night has been made
Sometimes Iâm looking for something online - often âhow toâ articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decadesâ worth of experience.
I donât want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesnât understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I donât know what search settings to put into Google to get this.
search.marginalia.nu is the search engine you want!
The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they arenât sufficiently search engine optimized.
âIt is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didnât even know you were looking for. If you search for âPlatoâ, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaimanâs blog.
If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, youâre on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?
I donât expect this will be the next âbigâ search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.â
i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!
it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.
INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.
tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but âŚ
My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.
Good luck out there surfing the cyberweb, you crazy cats. I love the shoelace website too - Ianâs Shoelace Site [link], unless thereâs another. My personal favorite old-school site is Alysionâs string figure collection [link].
âThe medieval warrior, realizing the consequences of his impulsive act, immediately approached the owner of the drone and offered to pay for the damage.
The owner of the drone was so impressed by the brilliant attack that he suggested organizing a competition for bringing down âdragonsâ with short spears next year.
Drone owners have another year to develop a unique âdragon-likeâ design for their flying machines.â (x)
I am 100% cooler with this knowing that the spear-thrower realized âoops maybe I shouldnât have done thatâ and tried to make it right, and that the guy who the drone belonged to was cool with it

Well, technically it's not new : it's a nurse shark. What's new, however, is that it's the first xanthic (imagine albinism but in yellow) nurse shark ever found !! Not only it's not common AT ALL to find fishes with xanthism (it's the first cartilagenous fish ever recorded with this type of genetic "anomally"), but if it's there and still existing as an adult, it means the species is chill-ish with other predators (it probably would have been eaten by then). Its eyes are white so it can also be a form of albinism, in addition to xanthism !!!!!
And most of all : ITS SO CUTE !! AND IT'S SUCH A COOL FIND !!
Please if a marine biologist or someone with more info can interact with this post to feed me some more info or correct me on wrong infos i'e given I'd love it !
(Also if you have pics of animals with xanthism, it's also very appreciated!!)

okay. some of you must surely be getting tired of seeing me say this but i literally cannot help myself- THAT IS AN ICE AGE GOAT. THAT CAN GET TO BE 800lbs BIG.
we called them musk-ox because we thought they must be some kind of cow thing, but they are actually a goat thing; this is to a normal wild goat what a woolly mammoth is to a normal elephant, only these things survived.
and i absolutely cannot help myself because of the tizzy my brain goes into over the twin facts of
1: ice-age megafauna that is still alive! and
2: EIGHT HUNDRED POUND GOAT
you can see the goatishness a little more in their babies
i just, i am crazy over the fact that these guys are still alive on our planet
(yarn info, pattern thoughts, and extra pics under the cut)
I had so much fun knitting this little guy! I didn't go into it with the intention of making a patchwork elephant but I'm really pleased with the results!
The pattern was very interesting to follow, it was generally intelligible but just not how modern knitting patterns are written. My first attempt at the body piece had to be unraveled because I missed a row and his butt got mixed up with his back leg. Otherwise, not too hard, but if anyone has specific questions about how I interpreted the pattern feel free to ask!
(or any knitting questions really. playing knitting tech support is among my favorite activities)
I decided against making the saddle partially because I ran out of yarn and was dedicated to only using this set of yarn, and partially because I'm proud of my seams at the 4-way color changes and don't want to cover them up.
The yarn is a worsted mini set from my family's yarn dying business, Shelby Strings, in the colorway Geode Cache.
I like the patchwork effect so much that I'm working on writing out an adapted pattern to give out for free at yarn shows! A lot of people like our mini sets but don't know what to do with them, and I think this little guy is a perfect use.
I'm currently working on multiple pattern versions; one that's true to the original but written for a modern audience, and one with multiple colors (along with some tweaks for a nicer time sewing it up and a knit version of the tusks).
I'll be sure to post them here when I'm done, but I couldn't resist posting my perfect baby boy the moment I finished him :)
thanks for reading my ramblings, here's some more pics for the road:
here is my gay and friendly elephant pattern document! I've included a transcription of the original pattern, a translation of the pattern into modern knitting pattern verbiage, and notes on how I made my patchwork elephant because he's just so cute and I think everyone needs one.
if you find any problems with the pattern or have any questions, my ask box is open! and feel free to tag me in your elephantine creations! i want to see the world full of friendly gay elephants :)
