Now that Britney Spears is free, sheâs inevitably going to do something weird and off-putting because she was in a long term traumatic situation with very little control of her life and getting your shit together is hard in the best of times and that does shit to a person and Iâm genuinely afraid the public who has been rooting for her for so long is going to turn on her and even start questioning whether or not itâs good for her to be free of the conservatorship and people are gonna need to remember that the answer to that question is unequivocally yes
The freedom to live your own life includes the freedom to fuck up.
Anthropology major answer: âThere absolutely was such a time! Modern humans and our ancestors shared territory numerous times over prehistory with cousin species like homo neanderthalensis, homo floresiensis, and many, many others!âÂ
Folklore student answer: âAlso, almost all cultures have something like djinn, faeries, hulder, fox spirits, and other similar creatures who can appear at least human and are very, very dangerous to humans!âÂ
Both of these things are true, and may be connected both to the above and to each other. :D
Biology majors: itâs dead bodies guys. Corpses.
Listen I hate this take on the uncanny valley so fucking much because many subpsecies of homonids lived in the same areas but some of them got along well enough to coexist and neandertals had enough desirable genetic traits to the point where human women (see here for a blanket on female vs male choosiness) would often pass up incel homosepian for the chad neandertal.
Genetics aside, various hominid species didnât start visually looking all that different until 50,000 years ago, while under the skin changes began as early as 89,000 years ago (ie the development of the Y chromosome but I might be oversimplifying at this point) Point being, even our non-human cousins didnât. look. that. different. from. us. Especially comparing the diversifying of humans themselves crossing trans continental as it was. And even then neandertals still had advantagious traits for living in the Eurasian hemisphere.
Also I digress, regardless of it being intentional, and with few perserved records from that chapter in our speciesâ history, I donât like the implication that the uncanny valley effect stems from humans being inherently racist (for lack of a word for hatred of non-human intelligences). I know that sounds off the wall but prejudice and sense of superiority by birthright is vastly different than othering by means of the sucess of social groups and the need to compete for territory or resources. Racism is entirely a Eurpean fabrication and itâs been proven time and time again to be a cultural outlier and purposfully designed to further the agenda of corroded theocratical religious divinity (here, here, here) and the financial benifits of the exploitation of colonism that otherwise has not been replicated by other cultures to the same degree. (this is the only example off the top of my head but Iâm know thereâs more.)
You know whatâs older than racism?
You know whatâs more flesh crawling than neandertals?
fucking rabies
You know what LOOKS like a human but doesnât ACT human ENOUGH? Do you know what might bite you and get you sick or turn you into something that also moves about in a non human way? Brain parasites that give you painful headaches and intensifies agression and confusion.
Say youâre a monkey and one member of your troop gets bitten by something. Later he starts twitching and swaying about. He keeps stumbling out of trees but barely feels anything when he hits the ground. He wonât eat sleep or drink. He makes guttural noises that keep alerting predators and heâs in obvious writhing agony. Suddenly heâs not your friend anymore. He doesnât recognize you and he attempts to bite and claw at anything that moves.
Up until preventitive oral medications and vaccines were developed in the 1970s there was NOTHING stopping rabies and it still prevails today and kills hundreds of thousands of people in third world countries with limited medical resources a year. Thereâs no cure for rabies once youve got it and the only reliable diagnostic is a brain autopsy.
Rabies. TB. Leoprosy. Syphilis. Meningitis. Toxoplasmosis. Anthrax. Mercury Poisoning. Prion disease. These are all bad and in different varying degrees can cause limps, sores, agression, confusion or dazed trances, ambled pacing, convulsions or uncharacteristic behavior in humans.
Basically everything that people are terrified of when it comes to zombies. Vampires bite. Werewolves rip people apart. Demonic possesion? Easy. Changlings take the place of your loved ones.
Also I donât think that itâs a conicidence that the things we find uncomfortable with the uncanny valley also just happen to line up with predatory behavior, smiling too wide or staring you down, blinking too slowly or moving towards you with a slow steady speed. Itâs just a danger signal to keep other monkeys in a troop from getting bitten by an infected monkey. Simple as that.
After all whatâs scarier? A dead body, or moving body that will MAKE you dead?
Iâm not going to be a hypocrite by pointing out racism being excused as a stemmed human behavior without claiming that the deep seated primal fear of disease doesnât make a good excuse for ableism as well. I mean we use othering to discern friend from foe, and then at some point decided that was a good enough excuse for racism. Theres legitimate proof that ancient homonids could and would be hospitible to the disabled out of compassion. The point of having these initial fears is to guage saftey measures first, but once someone or something is proven to be harmless that normally should be the end of it. I mean if an adult wild silverback gorrilla can look at a spycam and decide itâs chill after a moment of inspection then thereâs really no excuse for any of us.
Healthy othering =/= newly invented racism.
healthy fear of infectious diseases =/= excuse to hate disabled people.
But yeah rabies is more likely the reason for the uncanny valley effect thanks for coming to my goddamn ted talk.
Reblogging this version bc of sources and I personally think this makes for much more interesting (and terrifying) lore than any other post in this thread.
Holy shit. I never thought of the âzombie virusâ to be this take. It makes total fuckin sense. Shit
Someone said "Are you really so stupid to think that Africa has the same technological advances as us? If they did they would probably have clean water and not live in houses made of sticks and mud. Get over yourself and stop being so ignorant."..... Below is a tiny collection of images of the Africa they refuse to show you..
ches
Iâm sorry youâve been made to believe that the whole of Africa is poor, I really am..
Reblogging for those of you who think Africa is only what the media and movies portrays it to be
This fucks me up because itâs scary to think that we can be showed something all our lives and not even know itâs a lie
And that my friend is the power of propaganda, indoctrination, and media
Are these pictures of South Africa or of Africa as a whole?Â
@the-collecting-turnip From top to bottom:
1. Port Elizabeth (South Africa)
2. Unknown
3. Nairobi (Kenya)
4. Pretoria (South Africa)
5. Aburi Botanical Gardens (Ghana)
6. Cape Town (South Africa)
7. Pretoria (South Africa)
8. Harare (Zimbabwe)
9. Windhoek (Namibia)
10. Windhoek (Namibia)
To @kushandwizdom this is a rather unfair portrayal of Africa as a whole since half of these are literally just South Africa. So Instead to add to this post and better dispel the myth of Africa as the vast wasteland of poverty most people think, I found a much more mixed collection of pics from various countries.
Luanda, Angola
Agadir, Morocco
Lagos, Nigeria
Cairo, Egypt
Port Louis, Mauritius
Abidjan, Cote dâIvoire
Algiers, Algeria
Tripoli, Libya
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Tunis, Tunisia
So, there, a much better case demonstrating the various major cities around Africa showing it isnât some technologically backwards continent, but actually pretty up-and-coming in the world of commerce.
I once was talking to my Ethiopian manager about ignorant people asking her dumb shit about her life before she moved to the statesâŚ
the worst story she told me about was when she told a fellow student (at a fairly prestigious university) about a concert she went to back home. The other student responded with âomg you have music there!?â đ¤Śđžââď¸
Rebloging, because we need to see these pictures.Â
As for stupid questions:Â âdo you have grocery stores in Ecuador?â
These are great!
A redneck neighbor once asked my mom (in the 80s) if they had cars in Peru. Sigh.
This is the product of poor world history in school & little current affairs coverage outside Western Europe, except for catastrophes, so all we see are the war torn, poverty stricken, disaster-affected parts on the news. And racism, of course.
I bet most Americans who think that African countries are just completely poverty stricken have no idea what the US looks like in its poorest areas, not everywhere in the US is nice suburbs or unrealistically large apartments on tv
Los Angeles, California
Hartford, Connecticut
New Orleans, Louisiana
Camden, New Jersey
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
McDowell County, West Virginia
Flint, Michigan
Washington, D.C.
Do you see the world as it is, or as someone told you it is?
This photoset proves you can make anywhere look great or terrible. Itâs all framing and more people should know about that

IF YOU ARE A PERSON OF COLOR AND/OR LGBTQ DRIVING THROUGHT GEORGIA, DO NOT STOP IN CUMMING, GA. DO NOT STOP IN FORSYTH COUNTY, GA PERIOD.Â
yes itâs a sundown town but donât even stop there during the day. that place is full of hate and white supremacy. there are numerous stories in the news about this place with black people going missing, beaten, and murdered. this town has been like this since the early 1900s and nothing has changed. please avoid it if you can.Â
Hereâs a list of US sundown towns
Oh you poor, sweet child
How exactly do you think the de-worming process works? You take it, you wait, you shit out the worms. I used to schedule a full day at the park when I de-wormed my shepherd.
If you, a human, take a dose meant for a horse, well...expect complications.
My new, favourite over-worked clichĂŠ is 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes'.
The best part is those arenât worms, theyâre shitting out their intestinal lining!

today my dad said âwhy do people binge watch entire seasons? itâs not like youâd get a book and read it in one nightâ so iâm not convinced he knows anything about what i do in my freetime
Iâll binge read a book in a day, but if I binge an entire season in one go I probably wonât remember much of what I watched.
Reblog if you are antifascist.

Except America wasnât an endless expanse of forest with no certain borders. At least not while human beings inhabited it. The idea that native peoples did not cultivate or shape our land and that we had no borders is white propaganda meant to dehumanize and de-legitimize native peoples.
This illustration here show Apalachee people using slash and burn methods for agriculture. Fires were set regularly to intention burn down forests and plains. Why would we do this? Well because an unregulated forest isnât that great for people, actually. We set fires to destroy new forest growth and undergrowth, and to remove trees, allowing for easier game hunting, nutrient enriched soil, and better growth rates for crops and herbs we used in food and medicine.
Pre-Colonial New England, where my tribe the Abenaki are from, looked more like an extensive meadow or savannah with trees growing in pockets and groves. Enough woodland to support birds, deer, and moose, but not too much to make hunting difficult. We carefully shaped the land around us to suit our needs as a thriving and successful people. Slash and burn agriculture was practiced virtually everywhere in the new world, from the pacific coast to chesapeake bay, from panama to quebec. It was a highly successful way of revitalizing the land and promoting crop growth, as well as preventing massive forest fires that thrive in unregulated forests. Berries were the major source of fruit for my tribe, and we needed to burn the undergrowth so they could grow.
That changed when white people invaded, and brought with them disease. In my tribe, up to 9 in 10 people died. 90% of our people perished not from violence starvation, but from disease. Entire villages would be decimated, struck down by small pox. Suddenly, we couldnât care for the land anymore. There werenât enough of us to maintain a vast, carefully structured ecological system like we had for thousands of years. We didnât have the numbers, or strength. So the trees grew back and unregulated. We couldnât set fires anymore, and we couldnât cultivate the land. And white people would make certain we never could again. Timber, after all, was the most important export from New England.Â
Endless trees and untamed wilderness is a nice fantasy. But itâs a very white fantasy, one that erases the history of my people and of my land. One that paints native peoples are merely parasites leeching off the land, not masters of the earth who new the right balance of hunting and agriculture. It robs us of our agency as people, and takes our accomplishments from us. Moreover, it implies that only white people ever discovered the power to shape the world around them, and that mere brown people canât possibly have had anything to do with changing our environment.
Donât bring back untamed wilderness. Bring back my fire setters, my tree sappers, my farmers and my fishers. Bring back my people who were here first.Â

For those curious I recommend reading Changes in the Land: Indians, Colonists and the Ecology of New England. https://books.google.com/books/about/Changes_in_the_Land.html?id=AHclmuykdBQC&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button#v=onepage&q&f=false
Oâho. Our tribe used to do regular controlled burns in the brush in CA to prevent- guess what? Uncontrollable wildfires. (also it keeps the poison oak down and helps some plants propagate) And before yall panic these methods worked because they were sustainable. You canât survive if you destroy your resources; tribes knew how to make sure they could come back to a harvest ground next year and harvest again. There was still plenty of wilderness and it was often healthier for a touch of human help here and there.  people used to be all over this continent.Â
This all kind of squashes the ecofascist idea that only white people are the saviours if the environment and everyone else is a polluter.

We should stop trying to save these peopleâs lives. If they donât want to get vaccinated we should just let nature take itâs course.
"Give [gay men] the chance and they will vote for xenophobia, for racism, and for misogyny," says the study's author.
âLGBT people â especially gay men â are not inherently progressive voters. Give them the chance and they will vote for xenophobia, for racism, and for misogyny.â
From over here in Europe: YES. This is a very serious issue. Capitalism and white supremacy are very capable of incorporating the most privileged gay men, and potentially the most privileged lesbian, bi and trans people too, into their system, to reward their assimilation with privilege and receive support for their shitty politics in return.
White abled middle class gay men are the most sensitive to this because they are one step away from enjoying all the privileges of the system, and it is very tempting for them to belief that people exactly like them are the allies, while people not like them - refugees, muslims, trans people, working class people, angry social justice activists - are the enemies. But theyâre not the only ones for whom this mode of thinking is tempting.
Gay racists, gay conservatives, gay fascists are a real threat. Address it in your LGBT and queer places. Talk about it. Be prepared to fight it if it is already in your space. If left unaddressed it will destroy everything you care about.
white gays are white BEFORE they are gay, i beent sayinâŚ
@ gay Republicans no matter how much you hate minorities your dad still wonât be proud of you
Yes, AND: this is not exclusive to any sexual, gender, racial, or ethnic group. Under Capitalism ECONOMIC CLASS COMES FIRST!! There are examples of gay/queer, black, Latin, immigrant, muslin, fill-in-the-blank-minority people who vote republican because they believe/know they can buy their way into privilege. Donât forget: Tr*mp won a larger share of black voters in 2020 than he did in 2016!?!
So donât act like this is only a problem with white gays. Any and all âminorityâ groups are vulnerable to conservative drift.
When you have enough money, (or are fed enough disinformation) you donât really need to worry about silly things like civil rights, affordable housing, healthcare, education, etc. because you can already afford whatever you want (or be convinced you already have it/Democrats are gonna take it), just so long as your taxes stay low, fuck everyone else.
Very often conservatism is just an expression of feeling like you have something to lose if the status quo falls. Itâs a lot easier to be a radical progressive when you have nothing to lose from radical change.
