It started with someone listing "places with uncanny energy," like gas stations on a road trip, empty movie theaters, etc.

Then someone reblogged it and said those are called "liminal spaces," defining liminal as in-between, neither one thing nor another.

Tomorrow (July 4th, 2026) is the 10 year anniversary of the-crepes-of-wrath's comment, which:

Predates the 2020 spike in interest by four years

Predates the original backrooms post, and the the creation of r/liminalspaces by three years

Predates the earliest mention that KnowYourMeme attributes to Twitter by two years

I'm pretty sure this is the moment the term "liminal spaces" was attached to this sort of imagery, and it's TEN YEARS OLD TOMORROW!

List of things that exemplify what I mean:

Investigators can tell if the engines were running when a plane crashed based on dents in the engine blades

Every single part of the cockpit voice recorder is a clue. Silence? That's a clue that the pilots were incapacitated. Everything's completely normal? In-flight breakup or an issue with the electrical system that the pilots didn't get the chance to react to before power was cut to the CVR. Missing alarms? There was a mechanical error or a circuit breaker was tripped.

Everything about the NTSB's investigation into the Boeing 737's rudder issues. It took them a decade to figure that out. An entire fucking decade. And they figured it out because they were like "hey, what if the PCU in the 737 can just spontaneously jam in the right conditions without leaving a trace?"

Investigators can also tell if a plane came apart in the air based on if they can find all four corners of the plane (tail, nose, and wing tips) at the crash site.

They get all kinds of professionals in plane crash investigations. Psychologists, metallurgists, forensic specialists, a lot of people get involved in plane crash investigations.

Open computer settings

Click on Accessibility on the left-hand menu

Scroll down the Accessibility menu and click on the Keyboard Option

Under the "related settings" tab, click "Typing" which should have a description of "spellcheck, autocorrect, text suggestions."

Turn of the AI "correct misspelled words"

and most importantly: turn off Typing Insights.

I mean, yeah, it says that..... for *now.*

It also only specifies that Microsoft themselves don't collect it, and they wouldn't have made this something that I was automatically, secretly opted in for without my knowledge if they didn't have something to be gained by me not knowing it exists!

I only found this because a cat walked on the keyboard and turned on Filter Keys and happened to click on "typing insights" by accident.

Here's the thing: All I ask for is the 20-24 episode format. Not the hyperfocused binge-in-an-afternoon 8-12 episode BS. I wanna be invested in this shit. I want the characters to have to do stupid things while the main story happens in the background from time to time. I want the main story events to have actual hitting power because you got to know the characters outside of whatever the Big Bad Guy of the Season was doing.
