I don’t think you can make sense of the antivax crowd and RFK’s ilk by trying to see their crusade as just one of ignorance or perversity or simple cruelty; as a project and an ideology I think these antivax and broadly anti public health stances have a lot to do with eugenics and racial hygiene. In this light, it’s not senseless or stupid or over-cautious to eschew vaccines - it’s letting nature take its course, it’s making sure the strongest and fittest survive, it’s weeding out weak members before they can live to burden society. And of course you might say that’s ridiculous, that wouldn’t even work, plenty of antivax types don’t believe that. And this is hardly the only sentiment at play. But it ties in too nicely and plausibly deniably to be ignored.
