Love that this alien arm is clearly just green bubblewrap. 70s prosthetics I love you
Classic SF once again betrayed by a clear, static-free signal and a flat digital screen
This is how I remember classic Who and Star Trek, folks, with signal ghosts and scanning lines (but usually with more static/snow)
Sharing this on my main because it appears from the notes that it's useful for some modern viewers.
You KNOW classic SF used the limited displays of CRT television and the static of transmitted signals the way theaters use stage makeup and lighting to make inexpensive props look great fineβ take advantage of the medium! But it's hard to imagine how it looked if you've only seen Blu-ray HD restorations.
I swear to you, despite classic Who using bubble wrap for years as one of its go-to materials that reflected light in interesting ways, we never realized that's what it was.
I remember when HD tv was first available back in the 2000s, my university had a random HD channel. I watched SNL on it and it was crazy to be able to see how flimsy the sets were and how caked on and flat the makeup was. Then youβd flip back to the normal channel and everything would look fine again.
they need to release like vintage-mode low-def de-stored versions of classic sci fi so you can see how the costumes and sets were supposed to look like.
I've been meaning to make a post talking about my stroke because y'all got bits and pieces of the recovery but I never actually told the story of HOW it went down and the thing is the type of stroke I had is usually the type young people have and since having mine i've now heard multiple stories of people under 40 having very similar strokes and the scary thing is, is that they didn't get help right away. Because you're young and healthy and sure you feel weird but it'll pass right? but it doesn't, and it gets worse, and by the time you get to the hospital (some people literally take days to go) the deficits are worse and recovery is harder.
so here's a super long post about strokes in general, and mine in particular/what I went through.
Some of you might remember me talking about this when it happened- please read and be aware that strokes can happen at any age!
this is where commenting ENTHUSIASTICALLY and OFTEN gets you. btw.
looking for animal references on image searches has always kind of sucked but it's much worse after AI image generation technology has begun to actually past muster, which is why i always just go straight to inaturalist. can't recommend this highly enough. you get to both find out about niche species you've never even heard of and also see some really good photographs like this one

The other day I was sitting by my vegetable patch thinking about the tragedy of the commons (the slugs short-sightedly devouring all my plants) and I had a stroke of genius: we use scarecrows in fields, so why not tiny scareslugs? Right. Brilliant. I am a slugβwhat am I terrified of? Easy, my chickens are like hungry T-rexes to slugs. So I got some of these little decorative chicks that come with Easter decorations and placed them at strategic intervals amid my courgettes and tomatoes. I tapped into Christmas decorations when I ran out of chickens and added angels (similar concept). Then a few bears for good measure because, well, everyone fears bears, I donβt see why slugs wouldnβt.
Ten days laterβdid it work? Not at all. Did it briefly make me feel like a visionary who would revolutionise gardening? Yes, and thatβs all that matters.
context for this: he didn't actually walk away, he broke his leg in four places and got knocked out, but his first question when he woke up was βis my grandson okay?β, because before the bison charged (some teenagers had been provoking it earlier), he and his grandson were taking videos and photos of it from a fair distance, they did not engage with the bison inappropriately, < prev tags are important!!, also saw someone elseβs reblog mention that he did get the bisons attention as it was charging at them so it wouldnβt go for his grandson, mans actually a hero for that Iβm glad he survived with minimal harm for the hit he took, also they were hundreds of feet away taking pictures so they were being respectful of the animals, fuck the people who antagonized it and put him and his grandkid in danger like that
further context: there is no indication that anyone at all was antagonizing the bison; the teenage boys mentioned just "scattered when the bison charged." in fact the photographer "said every visitor he observed in the park Friday, including McDaniel and his grandson, were keeping a βrespectful distanceβ from the animal, and had done nothing to provoke it to charge." bison was probably agitated because of mating season. there is also no indication that the grandfather was playing hero - "The grandson was able to escape using some fancy footwork, but McDaniel was a sitting duck as the bison charged at him, hooking him with his left horn near his hip before flipping him some eight feet into the air."

Thank you, thank you for correcting this! I wrote out a whole thing than I saw your addition.
Very important context to understand is that this time of year is rut for bison which leads to heightened aggression and agitation in bulls. The bison entered camp already pissed off, in my opinion the truck driving by is what triggered it to charge. Either way, everyone's take away should be that ultimately there is no "safe" distance when it comes to wild animals. Especially large ones. A bison can run 40 mph, being 100 yards away is not going to mean anything to it if it really wants to charge you.
Instead the best thing you can do in a place where may encounter large animals (or small ones) is learn how to avoid or prevent dangerous situations. This means learning seasonal or hormonal behavorial changes like rut or a mother with its baby. Learning body language, what the recommended safe distances are and when to really back off. Learn what to do if the animal becomes aggressive or territorial towards you. Learn what to do if it begins charging, approaching, stalking, chasing or attacking you. If you need something like bear spray, or to make yourself bigger, make noise etc.
For small animals make sure you know what to do if you handle one (like removing a bat from a swimming pool) and if you might need something like rabies shots. Especially if you got bit or scratched by a mammal (feral/outdoor cars included). If it's a reptile especially a snake be able to ID venomous species and learn what to do if in case someone does get bit. For birds, be aware of zoological diseases like bird flu (don't handle injured or ill water fowl). Even insects! Learn how to handle stings and bites! Be preventive, wear clothes to prevent tick or mosquito bites and be aware of the disease they carry.
Can anyone stop being an anti black racist for a moment? I want a chance at enjoying things again
I'm not even kidding it's so clear that everyone sees black people and especially black women as some sort of alternate species. I'm getting into doll collection & customization videos because I've been getting into collecting myself and toys and art are supposed to bring me happiness and even there I can't escape the anti blackness. Like... you're lucky if you find a character or doll that's consistently brown skinned and carefully designed in popular brands. Collectors will always favor light skin or fantasy colors anyways. I had to watch a white creator call a custom Garnet doll "dummy thicc" and describe her in progress proportions as "female rappery" why couldn't you just have said curvy? You're not funny or cool and I'm very tired
I just want everyone to eat well and get old
every single one of us should have the chance to get old and bald and wrinkly and fat. I mean that sincerely
