Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.

The key to writing good fanfiction is to harbor a deeply humiliating desire, and the trick there is that even pretty basic and societally-accepted desires like “being held” and “being wanted” CAN and WILL be humiliating if they’re intense enough. Become so estranged from human connection that the idea of someone playing with your hair fills you with yearning so deep you feel like you’re going to throw up and you will write some banger fanfiction. It might have some other consequences too but idrk about that.

they told me not to get lost in the weeds, but these are lush, beautiful, and ecologically necessary native plants so it's probably fine
i’m getting more and more put off by this inescapable mode of fandom analysis centered around judgement. it has its uses - i think a lot of people use it to build their politics and ethics in a communal space. i identify x political message in the text, either explicit or implicit, i condemn it, i build my own sense of my values by doing so. but i just feel like well, i’ve already done this. i’m an adult and actually really confident about many of my moral viewpoints. so i am anti-monarchy, anti-hierarchy, anti-war, as deeply held personal principles. i don’t need to categorize and condemn the faulty and suspect values of the characters in order to affirm my own via contrast. but this is much of what is going on. the characters believe in the divine right of kings, which is risible and deluded. they believe in their special bloodlines that give them a birthright to their various privileges, which is of course very mockable. they believe in the exercise of force to achieve political aims, and also have corresponding socioreligious beliefs that valorize warfare, which is Bad. the task of fandom analysis is mostly to notate all this with fine precision, or at least to make jokes about how absurd everyone is. the viewer is politically and ethically superior to the characters, and sits in the place of judgement weighing their sins. we come from a self-evidently better civilization than this pseudo-medieval one, and also, in the many ways it can be connected to our contemporary world (source text written by a 21st century US american, adapted for television by same, inflected inescapably with the POV of the present) we are better than any possible analogues. again, i don’t think this is a wrong way to engage, it is just one i find really annoying and unrewarding and at odds with anything i am interested in doing at this juncture. it is very unfashionable to say that one comes to fiction for the transformative exercise of empathy - i think in resistance to the idea that said exercise has some inherent positive political effect, which i also agree is very critiquable. but it does have a more complex moral and political meaning for me to do this, to suspend judgement, to try to put that aside and ask questions about what it is to live another life from inside, what beliefs - no matter how objectionable - someone might hold to be able to do so, to get into the skin so deeply i merely have to let myself feel their force.

"Love/sex is what makes us human" Wrong. It's the obsession with rectangles. look around you and count the number of rectangles you see.
#looked up and thought ‘that can’t be hard’#and then my eyes widened with horror as I realized the sheer number of rectangles everywhere#I’m . I’m horrified
It's a good shape!

my storytelling flaw is that I love it when characters hate themselves, I love when they hate the communities they're part of, I love it when they have internalized isms, I love it when they externalize those isms, I love it when they're assimilationists, I love it when they betray themselves and everyone around them, this makes me very bad at watching and reading progressive stories
and my real life flaw is that I find real life people with these traits infinitely fascinating
