Quick drawing of Midam working at a coffee shop 💖 based on this post by @15x8
GRRM is writing about sexism in Rhaenyra’s story. The book makes it undeniable that her sex matters she is passed over, doubted, resisted, and judged more harshly bc she is a woman. The Dance shows how weak a woman’s authority is in a patriarchal feudal system, and how quickly that system turns violent when precedent is challenged. In that sense, the sexism is real and unfair and Martin absolutely wants the reader to see that.
But recognizing sexism is not the same thing as endorsing Rhaenyra’s claim. This is where many Team Black readings collapse the argument. GRRM is not writing a story about a woman heroically fighting for a human right to rule. He is writing a tragedy about absolute monarchy & inherited power he consistently treats as corrupt and destructive across ASOIAF.
Martin has never treated monarchy as a moral good. On the contrary, he repeatedly shows that “Rightful claim” is a social fiction enforced by violence, Inherited power does not equal moral legitimacy and Wars of succession are catastrophes driven by elite pride not justice. Rhaenyra’s sex explains why she is opposed. It does not morally justify the war she wages. And Martin makes that clear by the way he writes her rule.
Once Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing the book does not pivot into vindication. It becomes harsher, colder, and more critical. Her paranoia, executions, taxation, and repression are not written as tragic necessities in a just struggle they are written as the predictable consequences of a ruler who believes the throne is owed to her. The story does not say, “Look what sexism forced her to become.” It says, “This is what absolute power does, regardless of who holds it.”
That’s the crucial point many stans refuse to engage with GRRM can believe sexism is wrong while also believing no one has a right to rule by blood. Those two positions are not in conflict. In fact, they reinforce each other. The Dance is not a story about how the realm failed Rhaenyra. It is a story about how the realm is doomed by systems that make people like Rhaenyra and Aegon believe that power is something they are entitled to inherit, defend with dragons, and reclaim through mass death.
So when ppl argue there is a “rightful” inherited claim to absolute power. Being monarch is a human right. Waging war for that right is morally justified if the claimant is oppressed. They are importing modern moral language into a book that is explicitly anti-that logic. Its insane!!
GRRM’s position, as shown by the book, is much closer to Sexism is unjust. Monarchy is unjust. Succession wars are unjust. Being wronged does not make mass violence righteous. Rhaenyra is not condemned because she is a woman. She is condemned because she fully believes in the system that destroyed her and was willing to burn the world to sit atop it.
don’t focus on your responsibilities you need to make gay shit for a dying fandom

Hannibal is the best serial killer show because it doesn’t require me to pretend criminal profiling is real, because Will isn’t actually doing that, he’s just going into a trance and mystically mind melding with the killer, which is much easier to believe.
when I was a little kid at some point I got upset with my parents because I didn't have a crucifix in my bedroom and they did- I was like why do YOU get to be safe from vampires??? you're okay with me getting my blood sucked???? so we took a little trip to the catholic store but the one closest to us was run by a group of nuns that had been moved here from romania. I got a little baby pink cross and this sweet old nun was like 'aww, is this a baptism gift?' and I was like no. I need to be protected from vampires. and she immediately got SO serious and was like 'this is the best one we've got, you'll definitely be safe' and since she was literally from vampire land I was convinced she was like, van helsing. like the whole time my parents had been laughing about how cute my fear was but she literally Knew dracula and was taking my concerns seriously I held this over my parents for so long lmfao
listen she may have just been humoring you but even my limited experience with Romanian nuns has taught me that there is one thing they are absolutely dead serious about and it is their multi-generational fear of vampires
Jake Abel’s ass is just as delusional as us. 15x19 NEVER happened and midam is alive and well
i hate hate hate the way fandoms at large interpret the found family trope. so often people seem to think it means just recreating the nuclear family structure with characters who aren’t related to each other, and shoving those characters into either a mom role, a dad role, or a child role. when really it's supposed to be about finding/building a support system outside that traditional model, and illustrating that sometimes that isn’t always the best model....aka the exact opposite of what people do.

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
Yeah, sometimes we want the comfort of not having to do that because we didn’t choose to be socially anxious, so it’s kind of unfair that we have to pass through these moments due to trauma or even just life itself. When we didn’t chose to be so affected by life, when others don’t seem to be doing as bad as others (us).
However, it’s only something you continue to drag on until you’re an adult and have to speak, have to go out alone, have to life on your own, have to. It’s no joke and kind of worsens your general anxiety.
You have to find a way to do it. I’m sure you can, and if anyone with anxiety read this, I’m with you.
commission, plz do not use.
I'm a fandom oldie and a strong proponent of "ship and let ship", and I defend everyone else's right to ship what they love... But I think that gives people the idea that I like, automatically love every single ship??? Or every single trope?
I don't though!
There are a lot of fandom tropes that are on my "absolutely fuck no" list. There are a lot of irk kinks that are also on my "nope absolutely not" list, too. Personally, this is healthy. I'm able to look at something and go "Yep, I hate it, but it's not harming anyone, so continue to do as you please."
I think this is where the rubber meets the road for actually having principles. It’s easy to defend the things we like, just like it’s easy to fight for our own rights and those of people just like us. When you have to use logic to extend your sense of justice to people you can’t relate to, that actually takes effort.
I don't have the citation but I remember seeing one of the AO3 founders say something like "when we sat down to discuss what would be allowed on AO3, we started by thinking about what tropes/kinks/etc we would never in a million years read ourselves, we came up with the ickiest oh-fuck-no fic concept we could imagine, and we agreed together that we were building a site where That Fic would be allowed to exist alongside all the others".
To my mind that's the same principle, and it's worth challenging your own sense of disgust that way -- asking yourself, in that case, if I'm really anti-censorship am I willing to stand against the censorship of something that disgusts me? If I'm really in favor of human rights, am I willing to stand for the basic rights of the most loathsome human being I'll ever meet? How far does "universal, basic, fundamental" really go? Do I actually believe in these things across the board?
The back arrow is right there.
incredible things happening in the robot fucker community right now
