Princess Elia at the Tourney of Harrenhal, the moment her husband shames her for all the realm to see.

It was Jahaerys who started this trickling of civil war circumstances that finally was overstuffed during Rhaenyras claim. Rhaenys had full right and to certain right extend full might to fight for her claim yet she didnt. But it finally boiled up when due to viserys indeciseveness.

If Rhaenyra and Aegon had not fought someone else may have found a reason to do so in their name and dragons would still go extinct because house targaryen is full of people who should not have had children but did it anyway with people they had no business being involeved with romantically. Say what u will but invreeding does breed instability even if bad looks due to incest are not part of grrm universe.

It just got some poetic name like 'targaryen madness' or 'everytime a targaryen is born, god flips a coin'.

Also this is a headcanon on my part but if the war did not happen, dragons would still die because the eggs were increasingly getting petrified and the dragons smaller in stature. Perhaps the latter issue stems from the chaining of the dragons perhaps not. Who knows?

As for the Dance and the it happened yeah. Jaehaerys at least had the cover of “we had an election” to shove Rhaenys out of what was rightfully hers. And she didn’t fight for it, choosing peace and stability over personal ambition. Which is good.

The downside is Viserys basically got handed the throne. And since the rules were bent to make him king he thought he could do the same for his favorite child. Never mind the circumstances are different and he didn’t even try to help Rhaenyra build a power base to secure her throne (because again he was handed the throne so why would it be different for her?). Never mind that of course there was going to be a problem. His family has never really been that good at not stabbing each other in the back for personal power.

On top of that. There’s Aegon’s line as the first born son of the king, Aegon’s brothers’ possible kids also as true born sons of the king, which by Andal law, are before Rhaenyra and her kids. And on top of that her “heir” was an obvious bastard. And on top of that she had “true born” sons with Daemon. Like even if the Greens all died or didn’t want the throne or left for Essos or whatever Rhaenyra’s sons line would have had thier own Dance because one side is from obvious bastards but would have the “Queen’s decree” and the other would be her true born kids. She literally set up an almost identical set of circumstances as her dad for her kids when she died-but with bastardy instead of sexism at the core.

The Dance was inevitable because the Targaryens played fast and loose with inheritance. They treated themselves as above the law when they as the ruling family were supposed to represent it. And conquering is easy. Especially with dragons. Ruling is hard and sometimes “Do what I say because I have a dragon and you don’t” doesn’t work.

Though barely a man grown, and bastard born as well, he was wed to the king’s half-sister, had all the power and wealth of House Velaryon at his command, and had just become the darling of the smallfolk.
