obsessed with this discourse on pinterest. can Legolas swim? let's discuss
I'm about to nerd out on this y'all, so please bear with me.
So what's interesting to note is that Tolkien's elves all have a very deep relationship with nature, but especially so with water.
In the beginning, the very beginning, of the creation of Arda, the Ainur all joined voices and sand the world into existence, following the plans of Eru-Illuvitar. This was called the Music of the Ainur, which according to The Silmarillion, echoes of which can still be found in nature and specically in water:
"And it is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in the Earth; and many of the Children of Illuvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen."
The very notes of creation remain still in water, but what does this have to do with Elves specifically? In The Silmarillion, Tolkien further wrote:
"Many waters flowed down thither from heights in the east, and the first sound that was heard by the Elves was the sound of water flowing, and the sound of water falling over stone."
Before anything else- the very first thing that Elves hear is the sound of water. For most of us, the very first sounds we hear as humans are probably the voices of our parents. So this is a very special relationship.
And then there is the Teleri, a specific race of Elves most known for their love of water and their close proximity to it. The Silmarillion says of the Teleri:
"... in water they had great delight, and those that came at last to the western shores were enamoured of the sea."
Even though Legolas is not Teleri, all Elves share a love of the Sea. Arguably this love is more metaphorical in the sense that the sea represents their way home to the Undying Lands, but this argument is equally defied by the fact there were Elves, primarily the Teleri, that stayed behind to remain in Middle Earth and elected to not continue on. Legolas is descended from such Elves, and the Sindarin have never seen the Undying Lands.
So to answer the question of whether or not Legolas can swim, there's a pretty substantial argument for yes he can, and even further that all elves can. From the very beginning Elves have had a close, loving relationship with water, and for Arda's best nautical navigators and all-around naturalists, it seems only natural to me that they would be just as adept at swimming as they are at navigating the other wilds of Middle Earth.

it’s been long enough i’m making an executive decision that we all need to go reread the tgi fridays infinite mozzarella sticks article

I do genuinely believe that the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (and arguably the Zelda franchise as a whole, though i myself have played literally none of these games) is closer to fitting the description of ‘Tolkien-esque Fantasy’ than most other movies/shows/games/books etc that claim that label
Like, compare this post by tumblr user wufflesvetinari, which makes an important point about Tolkien’s worldbuilding, and also lives in my head rent free:
and then these quotes from Jacob Geller’s “Every Zelda is the Darkest Zelda”
and his conclusions about the messages in Zelda games are thematically very similar to the through-lines about friendship and love in LOTR, and what a lot of authors miss about what makes a fantasy story personal and memorable:
“A world without joy and humor isn’t a compelling world to fight for” is exactly why there are so many pieces of fantasy media out there that just feel like carbon copies of each other (i’ve seen many posts that explain this better than I can though I can’t find any specific ones at the moment, just know that I didn’t invent this thesis). You’ve got the cool swords, you’ve got the wizards and the spells and the battles, but first and foremost you need the LOVE.
i wrote and posted this comic late last year on twitter, i've since fully left and deleted all of my work from there, so i'm reposting it here for posterity and because it still feels relevant. images described in alt text.

okay im back, thanks for waiting, i just had to commit an act of senseless violence to satisfy a primal urge in me that i do not understand and cannot resist, what were you saying before?
Wahoo!
In 1934-1936, trans brothers Mark and David Ferrow of Yarmouth, UK, both transitioned at age 13 with full parental support. Mark medically transitioned first in 1939 at 17 and his brother soon followed. “Though we have been girls, we have both felt men at heart,” Mark told a reporter. Their stories show that trans youth can grow up to be happy, celebrated adults.
David lived in their hometown of Great Yarmouth, UK for the rest of his life. He became a local icon. At 15, he started selling books. He later ran a wildly successful bookshop until death in 2006, age 81, 68 years after transitioning. He had a daughter, Jan, who supported his work. The whole town adored him. Why, yes, that is a mug of his face. Mark, always passionate about art, joined the Kirby Muxlue Players troupe as a writer and traveled throughout the UK. His David Gower painting is currently in the UK’s National Portrait Gallery! His art still hangs in collections all over the country - although it’s almost never recognized as being by a trans artist. Mark married Edna Hall in 1942 and died in 1991, age 68, in Leicester. It’s important to mention that it’s unclear if both men are intersex despite the reports. At the time, it was customary for non-intersex trans people to claim intersex conditions in order to access care (e.g. Roberta Cowell). Regardless if they were trans or intersex and trans, I would hate their underreported stories to be forgotten!

movie vs book (i adore them both)
How could you leave this in the notes, excellent addition
Actually, this makes the childification of Michael in the movie when he’s 15 in the book really funny:
Sophie, a 20-ish year old woman from a fantasy land where getting married at 16 or 17 does not seem to be unusual: Yes, this is a young man who is almost an adult.
Howl, a man in his late 20s from our world: This is a BABY and he does BABY things.
STOP MAKING ME LOOK AT SCREENCAPS FROM THAT VELMA SHOW !!! I WANT TO PRETEND IT DOES NOT EXIST AND YOU ARE MAKING IT SO DIFFICULT
