Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

The nastiest human being on the planet nevertheless feels obscurely melancholy sometimes, or has high spirits when they step out doors on the first warm day of spring, or has opinions on their favorite TV show and which side the toilet paper should hang on and whether or not the room should be cold or warm when you go to sleep.

We're all still just people. Complex, with fully-realized interior worlds.

None of that will save you from becoming a monster, if you decide to do monstrous things.

None of it makes you exempt from the consequences of monstrosity.

Really funny to think about the knowledge gap Eridians and humans are going to have about each other the next time they make contact due to Grace spending the rest of his life on Erid (plus all the information aboard the Hail Mary, and especially the laptops Stratt put basically entire internet on!)

Eridians are going to have a fairly solid grasp of the English language (and possibly even some others), an intimate understanding of the environmental conditions a human needs to thrive as well as their nutritional and psychological needs, a solid grasp of a number of scientific concepts discovered by humans, and decent familiarity with human culture and customs (if probably an American-centric one). Some Eridians might even be explicitly trained as diplomats or ambassadors with the expectation that one day the two cultures might interact more regularly.

Whereas humans are like. Well. There sure are talking rocks in space somewhere!

the thing about chekhov's gun is that the gun does not literally "need to go off by the third act." the story works just as well if someone merely grabs the gun and starts threatening people with it, or if the Jewish protagonist recognizes the particular model as a Politically Concerning piece of world war 2 surplus, or if the gun's owner waxes nostalgic about the last time he fired it, etc. etc. etc.

unfortunately I get the impression that a lot of people do not understand that and therefore build theories around the idea that if the gun is not Specifically taken down from the wall and fired, it serves no purpose to the story, so why the hell was it there in the first place

not saying this is what that last person was implying at all, but there have been real times where people have acted like being bored to tears by domestic fluff means i dont understand the hypothetical appeal of that happening in real life. and sometimes i just get so blindsided by other peoples understanding of what fiction is even, like, for, categorically. because wish fulfillment/aspiration is so low down on the list of what makes a work hit for me. in many many instances my enjoyment of a piece of fiction goes up directly in proportion with how much i would never in a million years want to directly experience anything happening there.

I feel like half of the phm fandom thinks that Eva forcing Ryland to save Earth was wrong, but that Ryland refusing to save Earth at first was perfectly understandable because he was scared to die.

It surprised me, because when I watched the movie, I was just like, damn he was a coward at first, I didn't expect that. I also didn't even give thought to if Stratt was evil or not because to me it seemed like a clear cut "she doesn't want to do this but it's the only way to have a real chance of saving Earth" thing.

I expected Ryland's cowardice to come up again in the movie, like as guilt or a still existing problem to overcome, but it didn't.

The weird thing to me is that my initial reaction was to cringe at Grace's cowardice, but it seems the more common reaction is purely to feel bad for him and think it's acceptable to say no.

It'd make more sense to me to see Grace in a nuanced way, where he is both a victim in this situation and a coward for refusing to do the earth-saving mission. And with Eva, she decided to take away Grace's freedom/choice about the mission, and that's a horrible outcome, but it was absolutely the best thing to do, if saving Earth is the ultimate priority.

In that instance, Eva made the autonomy-violating but Earth-saving choice, and Ryland made the Earth-dooming but self-preserving choice.

That ↑ isn't a villain-victim situation. That's two people who are each faced with dilemmas that have no good or clearly correct solutions.
