during the smoke sesh our brooding silent friend said "forgive me master" before reducing the entire bowl to ashes in one hit and he didnt even cough
One thing I like about Ichi the Witch is that Ichi himself isn't particularly expressive most of the time. He has his moments in intense fight scenes or when he's excited/making fun of Dess with the others, but frequently he's got this really blank expression on his face. Realistically, it's because he spent a ton of time alone in the woods and didn't have the social background to learn a ton of expressions. I think there's a lot going on in his head but we really don't get to know about much of it.
In the most recent chapter, he's clearly thinking hard about what Fujimine said to him, but what is he thinking? Is he considering the alliance she offered him, as that's the topic that prompted him to remember it? Is he worried about his humanity? Does he care about his humanity? Is it something he's ever thought about before?
When Desscaras gives him the speech about home, she tells him it's something he needs even if he thinks he doesn't. The introduction of family - through Desscaras and later Gokuraku - is clearly something important to him, though it's also something he's never thought about before. It's this whole new thing he cares about now that his life doesn't have to revolve around hunting and death for death.
As wild as she is, Desscaras has been doing most of the "thinking about the future" stuff for him that Ichi's declared himself so bad at. And now something he'd possibly never confronted before is being challenged. His moral code is exclusively death for death - and that's not something that necessarily ties into his humanity. So he has to figure out what his humanity means, and whether it matters to him, and if so how. And really I think that's why he looks so blank. That's the face of someone who's heard something that really upsets them but they have absolutely no idea why they feel disturbed.
i just found a 9,000,000 leaf clover
if i was in an alien movie i'd be luring the xenomorph into a hot wok and adding chili, garlic, ginger, shaoxin wine, scallions, white pepper and sesame oil
blue hour

Trying something new (no lineart)
one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- there’s this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. She’s convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note he’s every played. He denies this. /]
