it's easy to make fun of marxists for being like "we have a special way of understanding society called Thinking About Things That Are Real" but to be fair if you ask the average person what their ideas about society are based on they will start listing some of the Least Real things to ever not exist
anyway, I know this post is mostly aimed at people who think history is secretly a 6,000-year-long metaphysical turf war orchestrated by The Jewsā¢, or who read every political event as a religious morality play with different costumes, but academia absolutely has its own version of this impulse.
the respectable academic variant, especially in the post-Cold War West, was the enormous cloud of intellectual febreze called post-structuralism. a lot of post-structural approaches, postcolonialism, liberal feminism, green studies, discourse-oriented theory generally, became institutionally dominant during the late neoliberal turn of the 1980s and 1990s, precisely when capitalism itself was reorganising into more decentralised, flexible forms of accumulation. suddenly theory is less about totalising structures and political economy, and more about fragmented subjectivities, localised identities, fluid meanings, discourse, hybridity, micro-narratives. which is not to say these frameworks are useless or wrong in their entirety, because many produced genuinely valuable critiques, but it is hard not to notice how neatly their intellectual grammar mirrored the restructuring of capitalism itself. academia became increasingly comfortable with critiques that could be endlessly discussed, deconstructed, and circulated without necessarily threatening the underlying organisation of production or power. the sharper material edges get softened into language that institutions can metabolise safely. and honestly, this is probably the fate of almost every new theory that enters academia; eventually it stops being insurgent and becomes part of the furniture because everyone still needs salaries, grants, tenure, conference invitations, etc.

the making of sam dickinson - dec 2025
Trapped between being militantly pro-choice and deeply concerned about the erosion of abortion rights and thinking the way that people talk about pregnancy/motherhood/children on this hellsite is pretty gross and borderline misogynistic.
To expand on this a bit more, at the risk of sounding like That Guy, a lot of people on here don't seem to realize the right to choose to have children has been something that's been forcibly taken away from people as well. I live in an area with a pretty large Native population, a group that has, historically and even to this day, been subject to forced sterilization. They're not the only ones, either. Other ethnic minorities, disabled people, etc have all been subject to eugenics and had their reproductive rights undermined in the other direction to promote what dominant society considers a """pure""" population. Even a lot of the modern anti-abortion movement still disproportionally favors making more white people above all else. Saying that not having children is always the right choice and that keeping a child is always the bad, regressive choice, frankly, comes from a position of privilege. Like everything else, it depends.
Pro-choice goes both ways, and everyone should have the right and medical support behind whatever option they choose without discrimination. Simple as.
And can we please stop this over-the-top disgust over the bodies of pregnant people please please please y'all are so happy to defend all sorts of disabilities but then dissolve into a misogynistic froth when pregnancy comes up
Oh my god don't screenshot me and put me on the dick jumbotron TWICE

This happens all over the world, because the US government (like other empires before it) rewards charities whose "food aid" involves shipping American crops and food to a country, rather than helping that countries agriculture sector grow so it can sustain itself. In fact, the large amounts of "free" food donated by charities can destroy local agriculture because they cannot sell their crops, forcing them to find new jobs or start growing cash crops to sell instead.
Empires actively work against trying to "teach people how to fish," because they want countries dependent on "charity" from the empire and exploitative international trade. Bill and Hillary Clinton's actions in Haiti are despicable, but not unique.
"Charity" under capitalism is rarely done for the long-term benefit of those given "aid," and that is by design.
Thomas Sankara
I adore whatever this dynamic is
