"Any questions?" "No, sir." "Good. Keep it that way."

Living weapon that DOES have a friend group (other, less valuable soldiers?) and they all are a little leery of whumpee

"it's okay, you can relax, the commander isn't around." "I am relaxed." "Oh... So this is just, you, then." Gestures at living weapon, sitting up straight, unmoving.

Or, the moment whumper appears they stiffen as if they're standing at attention

What kind of punishment did living weapon get for not doing the kill/acting submissive? Punching, slapping, whipping? Whenever they do something kind, they cover the old injuries like they're protecting the place.

On that note. I love when the living weapon draws the line. Like "I can't do this. They're just a kid." And goes back terrified, to get their punishment

"he's just a kid." "YOU'RE just a kid, living weapon." "That's different."

"I'm the most powerful weapon you've got."

Caretaker who spends their nights by Whumpee’s grave in case they need them because Whumpee was always terrified of being buried alive.

They put Whumpee’s favourite little nightlight in their coffin with them because they were scared of the dark.

Their voice was always hoarse from talking to the headstone. Whumpee always found comfort in their voice when things were bad, and this was bad.

Caretaker cleaned Whumpee’s headstone every couple of weeks because Whumpee hated when their things were unclean.

They were scared of letting the grass take over because it was just another reminder that Whumpee wasn’t coming back.

“Are you ready to sing for me, my little songbird?”

Whumpees that have been deprived of sleep by Whumper, so much so that they don't remember how to walk in a straight line and can't figure out whether the recent appearance of little black bugs in their cell are real or a hallucination.

Whumpees that can't get a full night's rest. They doze off, only to be jolted awake by their own anxiety of not knowing when Whumper would come back. Perhaps they are awakened by phlegm-coated coughs induced by their illness. They are awakened by nightmares, or by Caregiver who is worried they may succumb to hypothermia, or by a thunderstorm, or the rough blanket scratching their open wounds, or so on.

Whumpees who pull all nighters to protect their friends or lovers.

Whumpees whose eyes burn when they finally can close their eyes. Whumpees whose muscles twitch, who can't stop yawning no matter how hard they try to stifle it. Whumpees with dark, glassy eyes. Whumpees who are slow to react or have a hard time keeping up with the conversation. Whumpees with throbbing headaches. Whumpees with brain fog and memory loss.

Whumpees who have been on the run and have over exhausted their bodies. Their muscles and joints continue to scream long after its over. Whumpees with extensive blood loss. Whumpees who are malnourished.

Whumpees whose survivor's guilt keeps them awake, wondering what they might have done differently, whether it was all their fault, or why they were the ones to live.

Whumpees whose bodies are in chronic pain or illness and who have to hide it, causing muscle and mental fatigue. They keep going with a smile until they collapse or pass out.

have them flinching away from caretaker's soft touch because they believe they don't deserve it‼️‼️‼️

have a caretaker gently massage living weapon whumpee's shoulders, soothing words further adding to whumpee's overall confusion before they eventually lean into caretaker's warm touch‼️‼️‼️

leader whumpees. constantly thinking, constantly moving. they've a team to organize. they're relied on constantly, and with a head and shoulders strong enough to handle the pressure. but the shame when they're hurt. the agony knowing their image as undaunted is tarnished. and love returned tenfold as their team holds them up as long as they need to--"You're not alone, Boss. we got you. let us help."

protector whumpees. reckless thoughts to throw themselves in front of danger because they can take the hit, but no one else can. scars and muscles and training and taking it upon themselves to wear each broken piece with pride because it's another person they saved. until one day, they nearly do die. and it takes the whole team to remember they're not a meatshield. they're a person.

“Listen, if I pass out…”

“If you let up pressure, I’ll bleed out. So just, don’t move.”

But you know what I also love? What makes me feel seen?

Realistic whump. Whump inherently deals with disability. There is no way around it and that's the beauty in my opinion. So here are some of the less pleasant aspects of disability that you can realistically incorporate into your storyline without affecting the plot or the characterisation. (For people worried I am minimising others' disabilities as 'convenient', these are all things I've experienced. By convenient I mean convenient for the writer. No whump is convenient for the character)

Needing a mobility aid right after getting up. Doesn't have to come out any other time. Some things, like getting up, are particularly bad triggers.

Wetting the bed, soiling their pants, vomiting somewhere less than ideal. Any combination or extension of the above.

Being unable to eat more than a few bites at a time despite having been so hungry (gastroparesis is a bitch)

Being unable to cry at a major emotion.

Needing a higher dose of pain medication because they have a tolerance or the pain is worse than is 'should' be (I have so many real life thoughts on the 'should').

Having to wear shoes in the house.

Briefly losing control of your legs. Not long enough to fall, just enough to stumble. This is a new one for me (I'm being referred to a neurologist don't worry).

Needing elastic pants because of allodynia or fluctuating weight.

Having to take rest days. No, this isn't in the wrong list. All well-written characters need to take rest days, these ones are just more often. (yes, this will be in the inconvenient list too. there are different levels of rest days)

(I'll post some inconvenient ones later -- ones that are just as realistic but will affect your characters life like disability does. This post is for the able-bodied audience.)
