you're not an horrible person you are 15 years old

"you can be 15 years old and also a terrible person" teenagers do stupid shit all the time, adults do stupid shit all the time, what matters is that you learn about that and that you don't let that define you. you are figuring out yourself and you never really stop doing that.

this is a thing i saw on tiktok and it's been bothering me forever and ever. okay yeah you took bad decisions/hurted people/etc. but that doesn't mean that you're destinated to hurt people or to be a bad person forever and ever. perhaps at the moment you thought what you were doing was good. perhaps you were trying to protect yourself. perhaps you just didn't know any better. perhaps you thought that it wouldn't be that bad. whatever thing you've might've done on the past doesn't define you in any sort of way. you are a human being and you will do a lot of mistakes until you die. putting yourself down won't help on anything. others putting you down doesn't mean anything. don't let your mistakes be something that defines you, but let them be a reminder that you're still here and that you can grow as a person.

if this breaches containment I'll be genuinely happy. be kinder to yourselfs. life is about growing and learning, not about punishing and denying.

Your task is simple: draw a person with brown skin without adding gray undertones and not giving them blue eyes, and you’ll be free to leave. If you say even once, “that’s just not my style!” “I just don’t know how to draw that!” Or “but they’re not in that aesthetic!” Then the cage in the room with you will be opened and the extremely hungry bear within will be free to eat you. You have as much time as you need to complete it.

*post about how when anime inspired artists draw people with darker skin, they make the same mistakes over and over again so often with the excuse that the aesthetic itself excludes this common human characteristic; which is at best being bad at art, at worst blatantly racist.*

@caffeinefafnir in the future you can just say that you don’t care about Black and Brown people. It’s faster and gets your point across much quicker.

The thing you’ve misunderstood @caffeinefafnir is that racism is perpetuated everywhere and art is no exception. Ppl will sometimes unknowingly do racist things in their art(s), and when called out about it they can take the criticism and try to do better. Racism, like all bigotries, has seeped into virtually every pore of civilization. It’s not a On/Off switch that’s flipped at any moment, it’s a weed that grows over time on everything. You have to actively work at getting rid of it, both externally and internally. Some ppl put the work in, and may slip up, but the work itself is progress. What you’re doing is not that. You’re taking a defensive approach to shield the hypothetical artists that draw dark skinned ppl in unfortunate ways, and declaring that they don’t HAVE to draw dark skin better. You’re saying that their subpar depiction of dark skin is fine as is, and that they don’t owe anyone anything better than that.

Artists that seek to improve their art can handle the criticism, they don’t need you saying “anyone pointing out common flaws in your art is bullying you.” I asked for two things: brown skin with no gray undertones, and no blue eyes on said brown character. You called it bullying. Unless you’ve been drawing ppl like that and are now reflexively defending yourself, I see no reason why you’d bother to make your first comment at all. You’ve wasted your time defending something that shouldn’t be so commonplace in the art world.

This isn’t a flex or gotcha moment, this is about making art better.
