Going down the Carpathia and Titanic rabbit hole again.
If you didnβt know, on the night the Titanic sank, it sent out many distress signals. One of the ships that received them was the RMS Carpathia.
The Carpathia was asleep. Her wireless operator, Harold Cottam, had ended his shift and shouldnβt have been listening in. Luckily, he was. He caught a message from Boston, MA stating there was traffic on the wireless for the Titanic. He decided to be helpful and reach out to tell them. He received a distress signal back, and rushed to tell the bridge. They were skeptical, and didnβt really believe him. This is the Titanic, you know? Largest ship, marketed as unsinkable, etc. He rushed the message to the captain since he wasnβt being taken seriously, and woke him up. The captain, Arthur Henry Rostron, after being convinced of its legitimacy, rushed to answer the call.
The Carpathia was 58.22 nautical miles away (107.82km), with a top speed of 14 knots. This put the expected time of arrival 4 hours out.
They arrived in three hours. The top speed reached was about 17 knots. Theyβd turned the heating and hot water off to make as much steam as possible, and doctors were set to wait for the influx of injured. He sent out a message to the Titanic, telling them theyβd be there in 4 hours, and left the airways clear for her distress signals. Going faster than possible in the ship, and dodging the very same ice that had brought the Titanic to heel in the first place, they made it to the site of the Titanic after she had sunk, and saved as many as they could.
To put the speed and effort into perspective, the odds of them reaching the Titanic when they did is like a normal everyday sedan winning an f1 race. The engine was tearing itself apart. Fourteen knots was do or die, last resort speeds. The engineers were covering gauges and physically holding valves closed to keep the pressure needed.
Even the passengers assisted, handing out clothes, food, and warm drinks as the survivors were rescued. The Carpathia decided to bring the survivors to New York City, the original destination. They were speeding there at their original top speed of fourteen knots, and the Carpathia was never able to reach that speed again.
They knew they were going to fail. They knew that they wouldnβt make it in time. The fact that they pushed so hard for so long, nearly breaking the laws of physics to help other people in need has always been amazing to me. Thereβs something so incredibly remarkable about the sheer desperation they had to help those survivors.
Another interesting fact:
The Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, was on its way to Europe when the sinking happened. By the time the rescue was done, Olympic was close enough to Carpathia to meet up and take on the survivors. The Olympic was a much bigger, faster and better equipped ship, and doing this would've allowed The Carpathia to continue its journey to Austria Hungary, their original destination.
By all accounts, it would've been the logical thing to do... except for one little detail, being Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic looked ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL to the ship the 700 traumatized survivors just narrowly escaped with their lives.
Handing them over to that ship in particular felt like a cruel joke. Not to mention the emotional stress this would've caused for a lot of the survivors would probably outweigh the benefits anyway... by a lot.
So Carpathia's captain decided to turn around and head back to New York instead, the place they had started out from, completely undoing their journey's progress.

Sketch of an elderly couple I saw waiting at a traffic light.
Outdoor in sun perfec t place for president to do speech! Outdoor very warm very soft put old man on green lawn under sun. Put old man in warm sun. no problem ever in warm sun because good view and audience can see long speech. Nice podium outdoor sunny perfect place for old president can trust warm sun to give nice view to President good luck to President. friend sun.
And even if nothing ends up happening to donny, this should at least take out a good number of maga dipshits in the audience.
Before the turn of the millennium, depictions of the internet in popular media were always quite exaggerated. People flying through some kind of hyper-advanced "cyberspace" made the internet look more like Tron than... well... the actual internet.
And I think it's a lot like this with Ai. For decades, artificial intelligence in pop culture was always depicted as some sort of hyperintelligent entity. Cold and calculating, controlled only by logic and reason, smarter than any human, that's what pop culture has taught us to expect from AIs.
Then a bunch of tech giants came along and suddenly claimed they made that kind of Ai a reality.
With the internet, every idiot could see that it was just a bunch of web pages on a screen rather than anything even close to cyberspace from Neuromancer, Johnny Mnemonic, or Tron.
But Ai is juuuust good enough to fool people into thinking it's like the AIs of pop culture and not just a glorified text prediction algorithm that constantly makes shit up.

Share if you want people to know they should be scared to be racist around you ππΎ
"making them afraid will make them more racist" that's wild to me, because we live in a whole culture of social consequences for antiracism anyway. It is literally safer to be a racist than it is to speak up against it, socially.
Idk about you, but "I'm afraid no one will want to be my friend if I'm a white supremacist" seems like a pretty logical thought process to have, and I wish THAT were the normal and not "I'm afraid my friends will hate me if I tell them they made racist jokes".
"making them afraid will make them more racist"
Yeah, if it's mostly people from other "races" doing it. Which makes it all the more important that my fellow white people become a lot more uncool with rascism very quickly.
It's not just that they're doing corruption, but they're doing the kind of corruption that is basically "guy hands over a cartoon money sack with dollar signs on it" corruption.
An incredibly fucking ugly cartoon money sack with a dollar sign on it...

my entire childhood i was threatened with juvenile detention just for being a weird kid. the kids in my class would lie about me doing bad things, or be doing bad things and then i would get in trouble and my school principal said if i didnt 'show remorse' id end up in juvy. neighbors called the cops on me and my own mother wouldnt take my side. so no, i dont think prison is a valid tool for rehabilitation or justice. jail is a threat the people in power use to control us and get rid of people they dont like. get more prison abolitionist now. get more youthlib now. get more transfeminist NOW
