i've been rewatching parks and rec and obviously the fatphobia in that show is horrendous, but you'd be shocked that chris traeger is one of my favorite characters. I find him so interesting because the 'health nut' is an archetype that I hardly ever see satirized in a negative light. chris' mental instability is entirely due to the fact that he's trying to outrun the inevitability of death. when he gets even the slightest ailment, he becomes utterly devastated by the fact that he can't conquer his own body. the joke is that his fitness regimens are absurd and it annoys everyone around him. he's the first fitness-focused character I've ever seen that exemplifies how placing physical fitness over everything else will lead to burnout, mental health issues, and isolation. I love it every time he and ron swanson interact. ron's entire character is built around his self-assuredness. at his core, he is a man who values his autonomy. he is so headstrong and clear in his values, namely the pleasures of food, that when chris tries to get him to change his diet, chris always loses. chris' biggest character trait is his toxic positivity in the workplace, and that is intentionally written to be a byproduct of his lifestyle. he acts like an expert and tries to impose his way of life onto others, and it's generally accepted by the rest of the cast that he's kind of a wack job who no one should listen to. fascinating.

I know people have their complaints about Kal’s ‘I know it’s colourful, but that’s just so everyone knows we’re- good’, but I think the intention of it, especially in the context of the sequence it’s used in, is the motif of goodness and ‘be good’ in Kara’s life and how it’s very connected to her trauma and alien-ness. Maybe it doesn’t come off that clearly, but, as we see her father tell her to use her powers for good and helping those who can’t help themselves (contrasting what Jor said to Kal AND also telling Kara to be this with her cousin despite not knowing if Kal became a conqueror), then her mother telling her to no matter what be good even if it’s hard and you can still be tough, and THEN we see Kal during their first meeting showing her the family crest in all this colour and saying ‘it’s so everyone knows that we’re- good’ ; these are all pivotal moments not just in her life as a whole, but in her journey of being a hero, building up to her putting in the suit and saving Ruthye and the girls. Maybe Kal’s language comes off as childish, and that can be something you don’t like, or you can see it as his personality, or as part of him meeting this person for the first time, this girl who saw her world die, who is feeling all these bad things, and showing her her family crest and what he’s made it represent, that it means goodness . He tells her even without knowing her mother’s dying wish, he tells her the same thing, and he hesitates before the word, Kara doesn’t know English, yet maybe she’ll know this.
