Pretty sure this one singular quote all the way back in season 1 has been talked about more times than there are dimensions in the Central Finite Curve, but whatever. I'll add on to it.
I have a bunch of theories on this but 2 of them are what I like the most.
1.) Ricks keep Mortys dumb.
I'm not too sure but I think glitteringcrab has mentioned in their "Morty is so dumb..." Post. Y'know what I'm talking about.
They said that we the viewers are unknowingly being manipulated into thinking Morty is dumb just like Morty is.
Which is why I made this theory.
I did a poll where I asked if all Mortys are smart. The rebloggers said that no, since the Citadel Clones are probably. Ew. Manufactured to be dumber.
But... At what extent do Ricks keep their Mortys dumb? Do they force their Mortys into mental conditioning to make them dumber? Are only the Citadel Clones dumb? Or are they exact copies of certain Mortys?
I'm basing this theory off of the answer that yes, Mortys are forced into mental conditioning to think they are dumb.
"But why???" You ask, "that's so unnecessarily cruel!"
Well. I know. That's kinda... The whole point of this theory. Ricks are cruel which is one of the many reasons C-137 is considered as the Rogue. He let's his Morty be "free". As in not even putting a leash on him. In Rick terms, I mean.
To answer the question "why?", we're gonna have to look at the comics.
I'd like to mention this dude:
Who appears in Comic Issue #7. I will refer to him as Dictator Morty 'cause he is a dictator.
Basically. His back story is related to Rick. Rick had idk, did something to the family, so the 4 of them stole his portal gun and fled to a Rick-less dimension. Which doesn't make sense but whatever.
In the dimension, Morty becomes smarter. He becomes obsessed with science. He gains awards. Attention. Fame. But all the one he had never been able to achieve was the secret to portal travel.
So he makes a green goop monster thing that can travel to dimensions to steal portal fluid from other Ricks. It reaches our Rick and blah blah plot stuff happens.
The one thing I'm gonna be talking about here is that Dictator Morty's motives remind of a more well-known "Evil" Morty...
Yeah. Him.
Eyepatch Morty hates Ricks. Eyepatch Morty cut Rick off. Eyepatch Morty left Rick.
But so did Dictator Morty. DMorty hates Ricks. DMorty cut Rick off. DMorty left Rick.
They are very similar. The biggest difference between them has to be that one is only full of hatred and one is full of apathy.
What I'm saying is. EMorty and DMorty are both Mortys who became "Evil". Because of Rick. Because they disconnected from Rick.
But then what if Ricks genuinely think that Mortys are dumb? What then?
So. In theory. If we take Rick away from the equation. Morty becomes "Evil". If we take away the one thing that is, quote, " holding them back" they will reveal their true potential.
It explains why when Rick is not around or is unable to belittle Morty, or when there is nothing in the way of keeping Morty back, Morty "gains" capabilities. Like, the vindicators episode, it's revealed that Morty already knows a lot about drunk Rick. And since Rick is well, drunk at that time, Morty doesn't need to question his actions cuz no one is saying what's wrong.
Which is where my second theory comes into play.
2.) Mortys pretend to be dumb to avoid becoming a cocky Morty.
Definitely one of the more unlikely ones but oh well. I'll expand on it. What can you do๐คทโโ๏ธ
Just the title explains it so I'll just answer as to why Mortys would do that.
Rick already threaten to replace Mortys, right? What if Mortys were replaced cuz they kept rebelling? What if it's cuz they kept gaining intelligence?
A dumb Morty is a good Morty, because they're naive and gullible. A smart Morty is a bad Morty because they can see through your tricks.
What if the Morty Academy also told Mortys not to question anything their Rick said? What if it's because they know Mortys would eventually figure it out? And they'd go bad?
What if Mortys getting replaced cuz they turned smart was so common, they started using it to scare Mortys? What if the Citadel Mortys talk about amongst themselves?
What if Mortys deliberately make themselves dumber to avoid getting replaced??
Or maybe I'm wrong and I'm looking into this too deeply. I mean, it IS just a cartoon.
