It says something about a person’s work and talent when a dumb idiot (me) who has never seen PHM or Iron Lung and only knows about the general plot of both via Markiplier and Tumblr, gets genuinely really invested in the plot and progression of the BloodyMary comic they’re making. I’m hooked!
Idk if someone has asked this before, but as someone who’s trying to get more into making comics, what’s your process?
oh boy i dunno what to tell you, im NOT a professional. nor am i good at explaining my process. uuuuhhhh so im gonna post the roughs for a previous page (page 16 specifically)
WARNING FOR LONG POST, I WILL RAMBLE A LOT ABOUT NOTHING HERE \/
plot-wise, i am making this shit up as i go. but also i made a timeline of events because im normal and cool. my best advice for trying to make a story/plot is genuinely to get a friend to help you, ive had such fun talking with friends about my stories and they are such a boon bouncing ideas off of them. though maybe that's because all my friends are artists so they're used to telling stories, but its still good to collaborate. art is always collaborative anyways so just do the collaboration yourself first
anyway here's an extremely censored image of the comic's current plot timeline. blurred to avoid spoilers, lol
anyway, i usually write out what i wanna happen first (forgive me the bad handwriting, i pretty it up a lot for the comic lol). just kinda writing it out a lil bit script style. its what works best for me because i come from the film/animation side of the art world
then we get to sketching, and ill be honest i use vibes and a bit of luck to organize these. like, i usually know "i want this line or this panel to be important so i'll make this panel pretty big" or "this reaction shot doesn't need too much space and i want it to go by quickly so i'll make it small" and then kinda work from there. i do my best to keep the reader's eyeline in mind (extremely the wrong term but i cant remember the correct one right now), basically keeping track of where the reader's eye goes and making sure they're reading the panels in the order you want them to. (usually done by the placement of speech bubbles and the size/shape of panels, but you should super look up a youtube video on this bit specifically, i dont know aaanyything)
i also have my own rule of thumb which i have no clue if its standard in the comic making world where i put weight to if a panel is lined up with another. such as, these panels below \/. in my head, the way to read them is implied to be left to right before you go to the panels under that first one because the width of the top panel is different than the width of the below panels. yeah this may straight up be wrong advice but it's how i do it??? so???
and theeennnnn inking! both the most fun for me and the most work in the making of a page. each page takes me like 2 hours each and 1 hour just goes towards inking
anyway i don't know if that's helpful but uuuhhhh at least you get to see some behind the scenes?
