so will kind of becomes a mystical beast to them cause all they hear is his praises being sung, over and over, and when he finally gets on that plane to vancouver and shows up and he and mack start giggling with the tips of their skates touching and their jerseys tucked to match and these fond, nostalgic glances they’re sharing like i’m glad that you’re here, i’m glad we’re together, it all makes sense. that will’s a really good fucking player, yes, but he’s also just kind of mack’s guy, the person he looks to at every moment for advice and affirmation and everything between. that it’s really not about the hockey sometimes, not about the way they push each other to move faster, shoot better, but the way they make each other play with joy. the way that they make each other live with joy. the way they make each other better.

Love is seeing something good and immediately wondering how to share it. It’s paying for two coffees to go and remembering exactly how he likes his. It’s noticing a need before it becomes a request and answering, softly, I’ve got you.

Because providing for someone means making sure they’re never left hungry for comfort, reassurance, joy, or somewhere safe to rest. It’s wanting to become the person who can meet both his expressed needs and the quieter ones he doesn’t always know how to name.

And maybe that’s what Mack wants to be for Will. Not just the boy beside him on the ice, but the one who makes his whole life feel full. The one who carries enough for both of them. The one who says, through every small and wordless act, whatever I have, you have too.

So yes, Mack caught two fish. One for himself, and one for the boy who wasn’t there, but was considered anyway.
