you can still find me on ao3, the site formerly known as twitter, and discord @ dorminchu. might check out pillowfort if this site collapses entirely, but I'm a bit skittish in general about social media

On Certain Misconceptions in theΒ FanficΒ Communityβ¦Β
Reading more and more posts on social media about fanfic and fandom habits, itΒ struck me that there areΒ severalΒ misconceptions around the overall community, so Iβd like to speak up for a moment about a few things that some people might not be aware of.
Fanfic only exists to fix canonΒ
Uhm. No, not quite.Β Please stopΒ assuming thatΒ every fanficΒ enthusiast has a problem with canon. Please stopΒ assuming thatΒ every fanfic enthusiast yearns for pairings thatΒ arenβtΒ canon.Β
Many of usΒ actually loveΒ canon. Many of us read or write canon-compliant fic. Many of us love taking the characters and put them in other places in the wider canon sandbox whereΒ theyβllΒ go on canon-compliant adventures.Β Many of us love the canon pairings and want to see them developΒ further, manyΒ of usΒ donβtΒ ship the popular non-canon pairings. And that should be valid, too.Β
We all want to read/write smutΒ
Actually, weΒ donβt. Well, someΒ donβt.Β Ace readers and writers oftenΒ donβtΒ have any interest in smut, lemons, explicit sex, foreplay, romance, you name it. ButΒ itβsΒ not just the asexual community, of course. There are many others who prefer reading gen fic, who love a goodΒ plotfic, who are there for the worldbuilding,Β the story-driven AUs,Β the character backstories, the bromances, the platonic character conversations,Β whump, h/c, angst,Β etc.
PleaseΒ donβtΒ assume everyone is here for the smut.Β
Fanfic is only for young peopleΒ
While the fanfic community may skew more towards the 20Β toΒ 30-year-olds, pleaseΒ donβtΒ assume that people stop reading or writing fanfic beyond their 30s. Yes, some of them may when their life priorities shift, but a lot of people never stop being involved in the hobby.Β
ThereΒ isΒ a large number ofΒ people who read and write fanfic who are in their 40βs, 50βs, 60βs and beyond.Β Many of them have been foundersΒ and pioneersΒ of what you take for granted today.Β Who do you think founded and still runs platforms like AO3 orΒ long-existingΒ fansites andΒ fandom wikis?Β
A lot of those authors who write intricately plotted and well-executedΒ longficsΒ areΒ probably inΒ those age ranges.Β Many peopleΒ who write older characters with a level of realistic profoundnessΒ andΒ real-lifeΒ groundingΒ areΒ in those age ranges.Β That person who wrote your favourite fic may be a mother or a father of three grown-up kids who has greying hair and loves a good cup of tea while they frantically type up their headcanons.Β PleaseΒ donβtΒ assume all fanfic authors are college kids in their mid-twenties.Β
YouβreΒ a bad person if youΒ avoidΒ pet peeveΒ ficsΒ
I see this sentiment all over the place that fanfic enthusiastsΒ need toΒ supportΒ any and allΒ writers, irrespective of the quality or experience level of their writing.Β WhileΒ thatβsΒ a commendable and positive approach, I thinkΒ itβsΒ not good etiquette to dictate what people should read and support.Β
Just keep in mind that everyoneβs brainΒ operatesΒ differently. There are people who have pet peeves in writing that their brains will just not be able to get past. There are people who cannot get into a story when the formatting is all over the place, when there are blatant errors, when there isΒ headhoppingΒ or tense switching or oop characterisation. Please donβt peg these people as bad players. Please let people choose what they wish to read or not readΒ without judgement.Β
In fact,Β itβsΒ overall good behaviour to stop projecting your own feelings and preferences onto other people. No one person is the same. No one person has the same brain chemistry or brain function. What you love, someone else may hate, and vice versa. A good example here is aphantasia. Some peopleΒ literally canβtΒ see images in their minds.Β SoΒ if you read a story and see it all unravel in your head like a movie, donβt assume it is the same for everyone else. Because itΒ isnβt.Β
I think the world would be a much nicer place if we all remembered that a little more often.Β
sometimes my brain talks in two completely different channels at the same time, like:
Do not mourn for the work in progress but rather celebrate it - for it is a spark of creativity you would be totally unaware of had its author not decided to share it.
vs.
WIPs are the enrichment in your imagination enclosure. Use them for daydream fuel.
"it would be so good if it was good" will haunt you but "it's extremely good, except for the one or two parts which are so bad it's genuinely kind of insulting" will straight up drive you insane

the number 1 rule of fanfic is have fun and be yourself. the number 2 rule is the average healthy adult male can lose roughly 2 liters of blood before dying.
Just wanted to bring to your attention that the term whump was actually coined by the Stargate fandom specifically to describe making this guy suffer. He is the original Mr. Whump (no that's not his actual name). That's how torturable this guy is.
Everyone say mean things about him.
Here is a non exhaustive list of what he goes through in canon btw:
His parents get crushed to death right in front of him when he is a kid
He is forced to relive the memory of his parents death countless times
He dies and gets resurrected
His wife gets possessed
He fails to save her and she dies in his arms
He dies and gets resurrected again
He gets infected by a virus that makes him act crazy and gets put in an insane asylum
He dies and gets resurrected again
His ex gets possessed
He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation
He dies and ascends to a higher plane, then gets kicked out of the higher plane and his memory is wiped

I also like the idea of showing something as a problem before itβs shown as a strength. Almost every character trait has two sides, and by showing the βbadβ side first, it sets things up to not only make sense, but to also be very satisfying.
