inspired by what i saw in the closed captions while watching batman a few minutes ago

my take on Grant Morrison’s Batman, which I admittedly haven’t read all of and it’s been some time, is that, well, there are four lanes.

good ideas executed well

good ideas executed poorly

bad ideas executed poorly

most people try to pick the first and often drift between it and one of the others, with varying degrees of success at even hitting the first.

Morrison, meanwhile, said “fuck that” and did this:

whether they ever hit the first lane is one of those “ask three people and get five non-overlapping answers” things, but their take on “with prep time…”/Batgod and their “Batman is a mythic archetype not unlike Doctor Who and the universe will create things to fill that hole very often” concept stirs me in ways that thus make it possible to grit my teeth through the really bad parts, remember just how utterly fucked the mid-2000s political landscape was in a way that explains everything and excuses none of it, and think “this would be so good if it were good, please go back to how we are all Batman and never mention this other thing again, please, please, I’m begging you”.

all of DC’s problems with Wonder Woman now are a direct consequence of what they allowed Perez to do to the character after Crisis, which itself is a direct consequence of the contempt they clearly had for Marston at the time (and kept having until the past decade at best)

like, the fact that they didn’t let Grant Morrison go all-in on Wonder Woman’s entire history the way they did with Batman speaks very loudly

and I do mean to say that this is the main reason she hasn’t got an animated series or any of the merch pushes the other two get

DC ripped her entire identity out and sanded every last bit of what was interesting off in ‘87 and has refused to walk it back the way they’ve done with everyone else who got gutted by Crisis, and there is literally nothing to drive anything more than ensemble appearances until they let someone actually cross that Rubicon and at least fold the Lynda Carter series into her modern characterization permanently

#ideally it’d be everything in a Morrison Batman take #but we know they’d never let you go all the way back

once I was making sure I had shelves or bins or organization things first, it became a lot easier to actually finish tidying things up since I knew where things were supposed to belong

#idk. maybe it’s the slightly more unhinged aura and the weird nanite-latex vibe of the outfit and the tentacles and nearly killing Superman #comic Angie was designed as sexy in a very comic book way and it doesn’t do it for me
