head in my hands (in the 'laughing hard' sense) over alec experiencing Actual Emotions sans the fog of chronic depression and repression and being like oh fuck this is basically drugs. hey do you think theres something wrong with me
so i blinked & accidentally wrote 2.4k words of alec analysis, content warning for extended discussion of child sexual abuse
Keep reading
okay i blinked and accidentally wrote 1.2k more words to correct/elaborate on a point in here. continued content warning for extended discussion of CSA and rape. trigger warning alecs childhood.
edit: changed some phrasing and added more detail. no idea how long this thang is now
taylor hebert internal monologue: looking around the loft, I couldn't help but notice that Regent was the most represented among the decor. The TV was left on, displaying some video game he had abandoned. Every surface was covered in his belongings, and even the walls had his doodles and writing if you looked closely. Clearly he had never had to learn to be considerate, keep himself small and out of other people's space
thinking you're obliged to quash all self-expression and live like a ghost in your own home to be likable: certified taylor hebert moment
uncalled-for dunking on alec: certified taylor hebert moment
taylor: repressedly bisexual but the repression itself is also repressed in that she subconsciously feels the way she thinks abt women is strange (bc she subconsciously feels / fears / believes that she herself is inherently strange) but justifies & then re-justifies it to herself every few weeks .. to everybody else this just looks like her glancing at lisa’s tits & then thousand-yard staring off into the distance for a solid five minutes .. wildbow made her a trans girl on accident (like he did w most beautiful & true things in worm) but nobody tell him because he does not deserve to know
brian: i do legitimately believe he is both straight & cis bc if he wasn’t he would palpably b much stranger abt manhood & masculinity than he already is in-text .. he has considered kissing a man at least once but figured after hefty deliberation that sort of thing just wasn’t for him .. however i do think cherish should have called him gay not bc he rly is but bc it would have made him pause & afterwards fall into a period of rumination & actually i think this is how his summer of the forest could have happened
lisa: in love w taylor in every sense of the phrase but i wouldn’t say “attraction” itself is a factor there / that love isn’t predicated on romance or attraction or what one might typically attribute to love .. sexuality isn’t something she herself would rly care to put labels on nor something i think has much merit here but for shorthand i would just call her an arospec / acespec / etc lesbian .. cis but i think the only value gender has to her is wrt its social connotations (in business & persona) .. if she woke up one day in magical boy universe i think she would just adapt & adjust but she would grieve the loss of being able to go “look at this sweet face! would this girl lie to u :(” when that girl is in fact lying to u
rachel: butch lesbian & it is embedded into every aspect of her character & i will never ever ever ever listen to that foul man’s words he doesn’t know her he doesn’t even know her he is nothing he is nothing he is nothing he is nothing he isn’t real he can’t hurt me he isn’t real he isn’t real & canada is an elaborate ploy by the first pioneers of the parahumans wordpress to account for worm’s esoteric undetermined origins
aisha: bisexual (for realsies apparently) but i don’t think it rly comes into play much other than as cudgel for her jests & japes bc she will b hung up on her best friend from when she was 13 until the day after she dies .. whether or not she was srs when she rated cherie fuck in fuck marry kill is up to u tho i do think she has a tendency to either dramatise or just completely make things up when talking abt her own attraction / preferences for eeshy reasons (see: asking defiant is the robot pussy was rly that good) .. gender is whatever she feels like in the moment
alec: i think i have to delegate to lakesbian here seeing as they r his professor / lawyer / doyen / ambassador .. my only thoughts on this matter r i don’t think u could even call him a hedonist sexuality-wise bc there is absolutely zero demonstration of him expressing attraction / engaging in any romantic or sexual pursuits based off sheer opportunity & desire for pleasure besides vague comments abt his sexual abuse as a child
doyen...i've learned a new word on this day. textually he's written in a way where all the past attraction 2 men is used as an indicator that his childhood was fucked up + evil & now that he's out of the cult he's Normal (a straight gender-conforming boy who only seems/looks gay incidentally). but this post is not about what's textual this post is about what's beautiful + true.
i think when he was a small child he got little crushes on girl And boy movie characters and he was like [thinking 2 himself while staring at tv screen] if i were the princess marrying the prince my dress would be blue and silver with special bows :). but he doesn't remember that anymore. he dressed in boy's clothes but his older siblings still all picked up on his Effeminate Vibes + Mannerisms because mean heterosexual children are like sharks to blood in the water with that shit. cherie watching 9yo alec have a favorite boy band member like oh...jean-paul une petite fif :)? i think the heartbroken household effectively treated his bisexuality as like...a mildly embarrassing fetish to make fun of him w/ (i.e. torment him w/) but obviously sexual interactions w/ men weren't, like, Discouraged. by any means. he was extremely hypersexual as a coerced coping mechanism for The Horrors btwn roughly ages 10-13, and towards the end of his time there/after he ran away he just kinda. shut down and put his sexuality in a box and dissociated from it in the same way he's dissociated from all of his other emotions.
he has no confusion about understanding he's bisexual--he remembers what he was into--or that dressing the way he does is a Gay Person Thing To Do, but he considers himself to just Not Be Interested In That Now. no gender preference in the sense that if you held up pictures of attractive men and woman he would react with the same amount of "meh" to both. reengaging w/ his own sexuality would necessitate processing things he is not ready or able to process so he's like. yeah sex is cringe/funny and having crushes is dumb and gay. video game time.
boy who likes physical affection and Thinks he thinks he had some good times w/ the only physical attention he received as a child (sexual abuse) but does in fact unconsciously solely associate being attracted to someone or aroused with Really Bad/Embarrassing/Scary Things happening. boy who has miserable wet trauma nightmares once every 3 months goes "wow thats really annoying" and then obliviously trots off to eat his morning bowl of captain crunch. boy who acts extremely casual about going U know back in the day i used 2 have someone in my bed every night...but 100% fully assumed aisha was going to make horrendous meanspirited fun of him when they were discussing childhood celebrity crushes. i jest about them playing fmk w ppl the undersiders fought but also i do think he would refuse to play the game were the idea raised because the mere idea of attempting to seriously consider let alone admit whether or not he would fuck someone would be psychologically intolerable to him. he would call it stupid and boring and deflect. i do think he picks up a little crush on aisha over the course of their friendship but he is 100% utterly oblivious to it and literally all of the ridiculous over the top desperate shit we see him do is Solely because he's Desperate For A Friend. she has observed the crush but is not going to be the one to tell him about it.
as for disputes. all of these are true to me except i dont think brian would ever consider kissing a man. and aisha is a girl to me but i can understand and respect weird nonbinary aishies.

Interesting part of Alec's power is the timeframe for it. At best he can take someone over in 15 min, but it can also take hours. With Cherish we see her affect Ballistic in an instant, Heartbreaker is probably similar, but for Alec the best he can manage is messing with limbs. With how long fights actually take, he'll never be able to hijack anyone in one. Pretty much the only time he could take someone over is if he actively goes after them.
And that makes sense with what his situation was when he got powers. He didn't really want strangers to come and help him. Heroes have tried and failed and that only makes his living situation worse and his dad more quick to anger. He wants the people he's familiar with, the people that are constantly around him to step in and help. But they don't, so his power forces them to, so long as he knows them and knows them well.
(Can't remember if you've talked about this particular aspect of his power before @lakesbian but I saw you're recent post and started thinking)
#also he can always remember their nerve layout so they’ll always be tied to him#and they can't escape that hold he has over them#kinda like how he can't escape the hold being part of his family has over him
i've mentioned this at least once or twice before yeah but never in a lengthier essay. 100% indicative of where his trauma is stemming from that his power works on people better the longer he's been around them and has a "holding capacity" of, like, 4 people tops before he starts getting too distracted to puppet everyone. shows a focus on specifically needing to control a smaller group of people he's familiar with vs. taylor's power giving her control over lots of faceless/omnipresent organisms in a way that indicates she's more viewing Society As A Whole as something that's out to get her. <- this is one of the points ive brought up before.
it's not that he Didn't want strangers/heroes to help him--i actually think the fact that he would've appreciated help from general/normal society & never got it is 1. exactly why he ended up where he did and 2. something he still carries a lot of loathing and envy over (he's so mad at sophia 4 a reason). but his trauma and powers are overall more specifically focused on needing help from people within the tight cult environment he was raised in, and never receiving it. i think it's why he's so obviously ride or die for the undersiders, why he does shit like leaping to conclusions that bitch betrayed them + getting furious about it, why he's so incandescent when he finds out taylor really WAS going to betray them, etc. he's deep down both v closely attached to the Only People He's Ever Been Able To Trust + always scared about the idea of being betrayed/neglected again.
rachel and alec are specifically interesting to me re the undersider Situations as of early worm posting. thats right for the first time in my life im saying rachel specifically is interesting to me. everyone on the team is at least a bit lonely i think but it's so loud and obvious with rachel, because she's loud and obvious about everything. she's a disabled teen who's been homeless since she was very young. she was deeply abused by the foster home system, and the legal system responded to her wounded and confused outbursts as an autistic child by criminalizing her and hunting her down. she can't exist in public without the cops being called. society has done everything to demonstrate that it doesn't want her, and then blames her when she doesn't trust people.
brian says that the undersiders are the closest thing she can have to friends. alec says that they're the closest thing she has to a family. (which is an entire can of worms in itself wrt alec's relation to the undersiders.) and both of those things are true, but there's also something so tragic in their assumption that their tenuous connection w/ rachel where she can only just barely tolerate them is the best she can ever have. they're the only people she can even remotely trust to have her back or treat her somewhat fairly instead of fucking her over, but they're still fundamentally considering her beyond close connection, less of a friend or someone to attempt befriending and more of someone to keep on a leash. of course taylor is the only one to actually get close to her--taylor is the only one who tries to engage with her, as a person, on rachel's own terms, instead of begrudgingly tolerating her. rachel :(
& alec is the other team member who's in the Extra Lonely Isolation Club...he gets silly with the team sometimes, he has his little teenage banter w/ brian, he and lisa are clearly very familiar with each other in the way ppl who've been living together for a year and a half are. it's really good for him. it's the first time in his entire life he's gotten to have a consistent home with his own belongings, and he's getting to have it because he's part of the undersiders. the undersiders are literally the first people in his entire life that approach counting as a friendship. he gets SO FUCKING MAD!!! when he leaps to assuming that rachel stole the money from them. he gets So Mad he immediately goes "i vote we kill her" and then goes on a seething rant about how he wouldn't have thought she'd do that since the undersiders are the closest she has to family, but apparently she would. and the projection is so obvious! he's not wrong about applying the sentiment to rachel, but there's a reason he goes farther than brian's "closest she has to friends" and into the more intimate territory of "closest she has to family"--the two-way street there means that the undersiders are the closest he has to family, and the idea of being betrayed by one of them hurts enough to trigger the aggression he always displays when he's feeling vulnerable.
and he still doesn't tell them Jack Shit. he obviously lies to them all the fucking time, because brian is under the impression that he "dropped out" of school, when the reality is that he never went. even lisa brings up heartbreaker to taylor without any awareness that he's the father of the boy she's been living with for over a year. alec spends most of the early arcs in worm in dissociative, depressed fugues. the other undersiders have lengthy conversations where they're sharing personal info and he's just trailing along behind them, not speaking for so long that even the readers can forget he's there. lonely broken little shell of a boy who is so empty all of the time and does not even know it. aisha cannot get here fast enough if i have to see him being depressed and disconnected for one (1) more chapter i will explode
they should’ve let him keep the hoverboard
the reason taylor responds to rachel lindts confusing dogtism with 'id better go buy and read an entire book to learn how to interact with and befriend her even though she punched me in the face' but to alecs mildly socially awkward attempts at friendship with 'hmm. id ont like him' is because taylor and rachel are both autistic but alec is not, probably
#she see's rachel and subconsciously goes 'wow another teen girl who has been trodden on by society... we are the same!'#and concludes that's why she is the way she is#she sees alec and goes 'this guy just sucks!'
remember how taylor is like "i wish i and my bullies were boys so i could just beat them up, but instead they're girls who bully me in more subtly manipulative and often verbal ways so if i beat them up it would just be a victory for them :(." and then the first thing that rachel does to taylor is beat her up, to which taylor responds by beating Her up, and then she actually decides to attempt befriending rachel. whereas the first thing alec does is repeatedly call her "dork" in an attempt to be friendly fully unaware that he sounds like a bully in an after-school special movie. to which taylor responds by going "my name's not dork, and i wouldn't do that" like a brave victim in a bullying psa video.
butch girl win, effeminate boy loss. not that calling taylor 'dork' is intrinsically effeminate it's just funny that taylor calls rachel butch & rachel is a shithead to taylor in a way that taylor 1. accurately considers to be 'boyish' and 2. would prefer over girl-style bullying whereas alec is repeatedly demonstrated to be a tad effeminate and unintentionally reminds taylor of how girls bully her
Had a long, rambling post in my drafts which I'm pretty sure has likely since been obviated by the commentary of others, but it's really interesting to me how Aisha basically picks up and carries out the remainder of Alec's telegraphed character arc after his death. Cherish shows up in the narrative when she does to remind Alec that his "fresh start" as Regent left a ton of his siblings trapped in Heartbreaker's orbit, that Heartbreaker himself is still out there; his character development over the course of the book involves becoming more and more of the kind of guy who'd eventually go back and try to resolve that in a big thematically resonant showdown. Unfortunately, as a direct result of the process of becoming that guy he gets prematurely turboexploded, so Aisha ends up being the one to sink her time and energy into resolving that dangling plot thread. And it's interesting to me because it almost reads like Aisha makes that decision thinking of the world she lives in in terms of dangling plot-threads and unfinished character arcs- narrativizing their own lives as a way of coping? I mean her last interlude is shot full of theatricality, performativity. Theatre motifs abound with the two of them in general. I dunno, there's a meta vibe to the whole thing that I'm not caffeinated enough to really try and flesh out or defend as really truly present in the text, but it feels like there's something there...
it's mentioned around the start of behemoth fight that heartbreaker is coming after the undersiders, right? like, isn't there a scene where taylor is like Are you guys sure you're gonna be good and they're like yeah sure we're fine. because regent has gotten big enough that heartbreaker is no longer willing to just sit around and let him, he's starting to try to chase after him. boy who cannot escape from being a vasil/confronting his father, no hunting-down needed.
i digress. it's inaccurate to read aisha killing heartbreaker as narrativizing her life to cope/resolving alec's missing plot thread where he was going to finally put down his evil father and resolve his siblings being trapped, because we know why aisha did it, and the reasoning is not at all that. like it's an interesting sentiment but it's not really true of aisha as a person and it's not true of why alec would have killed his father (or wanted to). i'll stick the essay under a cut because it's long

it really is something how alec would get along awesome with the taylor inside taylors head
like taylor thinks but does not say out loud so many jokes that alec would find hilarious and the main thing about realizing this is getting sad about how taylor is a natural chatterbox but just keeps all her funny and interesting thoughts to herself now because she's been taught they're fundamentally unwanted. and if you're me, the Other thing about this is being incapable of not noticing every time taylor thinks something that alec would think was great if she actually said it out loud
alec would find taylor roasting trickster into the ground hysterical
regent would have a fun time on PHO by trying to get Certified Guy Who Lives In Brockton Bay roling and making it increasingly more obvious that he's literally regent starting w/ "yeah i'm living in regent's territory" and ending in him literally dropping a selfie at which point the mods would ban him but the people who actually like the undersiders would start being all FREE REGENT!!! in the thread. and at least 5 of those people are just him going "yeah free that guy he's cool" on other accounts
"reverse image search: 0 images found" screenshot from someone in the thread for alecs selfie of himself out in his territory next to his graffiti
not to make literally everything ever about alec vasil but to be clear the similarity between lisa and alec is that they will both just say whatever the fuck to piss someone off in a "i'm not bigoted i hate everyone equally" way/regardless of what their actual beliefs are and the two differences are that 1. lisa does so when she deems it to be beneficial to her/her team (and maybe sometimes for fun...) whereas alec does it just anytime he's mad at someone and 2. alec has a significantly worse ability than lisa to calculate whether or not he'll actually be able to get away with it and thus occasionally ends up whinily backpeddling to avoid social ruin
alec also does it when hes stressed which just makes it more confusing for fucking everyone because hes acting nonchalant and cool and chill during say An Endbringer Attack and while you a normal person is freaking out this random guy starts making. racist jokes???????????
AHFDSHAHLKFDS. i genuinely believe that it's like. On Purpose Writing. that he whips it out there and nowhere else because
HE IS NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY MAN JUST WHEN HIS LIFE WAS STARTING TO GO PRETTY COOL A GIANT FIRE AND LIGHTNING MONSTER THAT'S REALLY GOOD AT KILLING PEOPLE FOR EXAMPLE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT EVEN SHOWED UP. this is why he makes jokes about the undersiders dying like 3 times in a row his brain does not know how to compute "these people i actually like might die badly and i can't stop thinking about it (<- this is called 'anxiety')" without expressing it thru shit jokes. the first time he's got plausible deniability the second time eeeh the third time you can tell he's Fixating.
as evidenced by brian complaining 2 taylor about alec/aisha prior 2 her leaving + aisha and alec calling him and taylor 'team mom and dad' in a 'youre genuinely acting more like a lame parent trying to control us than like my friend' way (which extra sucks 4 alec bc brian Used to be basically his only buddy but is now mad at and harsh on him bc of his own personal complexes wrt aisha that are not alecs fault), Alec Is Quite Very Possibly Not So Happy With Brian. and you know what alec does when he's not so happy with someone? when he feels like someone is riding his ass a little too hard or being more of a dick to him than necessary? that's right he tries to piss them off and get under their skin in the way he thinks might really nag them. and so he breaks his good boy streak and loses all of his collected good boy points (can be redeemed for an ice cream at the counter) by being wildly racist. and then whinily attempting to backpeddle when aisha tells him to shut the fuck up because he doesn't actually want to upset her but he's allergic to admitting when he's been an asshole. Not his finest hour in any way. I don't even think he knew how he was going to end that sentence in front of behemoth. I don't think he processed a single fucking word coming out of his mouth the entire day. He's just fucking saying shit, and also thoroughly convinced that his inexplicable stomach ache is because that yogurt he ate before the planeride was bad and not because if he thinks too hard about his only best friend ever possibly dying he starts vibrating back and forth in place. He sucks so bad.
in addition i also think that hes making some of the jokes as like. protection? like if he Acknowledges that in A Story a couple getting mushy raises a huge death flag then brian and taylor Can't die because he just said out loud that that's what would happen in Fiction so obviously now its not gonna happen irl. and ofc in the end he dies bc He didnt raise any death flags & didn't comment on his potential death lol
im not saying this is how it Literally worked obv its not pact rather i think its his protective slash coping mechanism of well if i say it out loud it means my friends Wont bite it even if im mad at brian for being uncool and hurt by taylor leaving :)
there's definitely an aspect of the jokes coming across as like. "haha wouldnt it be Craaazyyy if that happened imagine if that happened that's the sort of thing that Would happen in a fictional scenario, right, but this is real life and not a fictional scenario so it won't happen and it's just a joke. but what if it did happen though." where he's distancing it from reality thru the lens of the joke & maybe even unconsciously hoping someone will go "shut the fuck up regent you're being annoying of course no one will die." but i think the biggest aspect of it is like. he grew up learning that when you are put in a scenario where something very bad is happening to you and you cannot stop it, the only way to stop the pain is to stop caring. so he's (again obviously unconsciously) trying to assert that he Doesn't Care, and the idea of the undersiders dying is funny, so now it can't hurt him to think about. like, by establishing it as Just A Hypothetical Joke Scenario That He Doesn't Care About, he's definitely trying 2 protect himself from it. but of course when it does actually threaten to become a reality his little emotional armor facade immediately breaks down and he does the only thing he can think of to stop it. he genuinely probably would have done the same for any of the undersiders tbh
Describing Alec as "cold blooded murderer" is so so funny. Murderer yes, but he is perhaps the least detached and unaffected by his victims pain ever on account of his murder style literally being Hyper Empathy Attack On All Senses NOW
do we think it did anything, like, bad to alec's mind that whenever he was forced to torture someone he was using his power on as a child he could feel literally all of it. or is he probably fine
killing myself Eee Mmediately over brian laborn
The one and only time he admits this much vulnerability to Anyone and this is where they end up:
I can't even caption it. You just have to look at it. Fucking hell. Every day Brian Laborn wakes up.
"we even cared about each other" insanely dire sentence i dont know how people dont get brainworms no pun intended about taylor and brian when theyre Like This. like. Ohhhhhhh good lird .
Yeah actually including One More Excerpt from Snare 13.10 alone, prior to the rest of the longer conversation. Taylor's narration after Brian is down off the fridge wall ends up fixating on Brian not reaching out to lean on her and her insecurities triggered by that for some time, and because she's so focused on that this moment is not one she reflects on except how it relates back to her insecurities about her 'insufficiency'.
This comes in the context of Brian starting to explain his new power:
This is so much to me. It's a moment where (like confessing to being afraid) Brian does reach out, and in this case extremely concretely: his power is now one that lets him directly connect to another cape's power. In the world of Worm, connecting to another cape's power is in some ways arguably connecting directly to their most vulnerable trauma, right? It's as much felt as intellectually understood.
And Taylor flinches from it! It's not even an immediate rejection - Taylor sits there watching the tendril 'taking its time' before she 'abruptly' stands up fast enough to make Brian (admittedly on edge) jump up in alarm. Then they stare at each other until Brian relaxes, however long that takes, which I imagine we can infer to be 'more than a second'. In classic Taylor Hebert omission style we don't even see what her internal decision making was, we only see her verbal explanation after the fact.
This is also before he actually tells her what the new power does, which both contributes to her flinching and makes it more obviously about vulnerability in a broad sense. It makes sense she wouldn't want someone using a power she doesn't understand yet on her. But there was a moment where she was sitting there watching him reach out, and then there was a moment where she rejected it, and then Brian stares at a shuttered window and she curls up into the bony pillbug fetal position. Which could signify anything as far as Taylor's lack of reflecting is concerned about that as opposed to worrying Lisa is giving Taylor a bad grade in 'being a supportive friend' by suggesting Brian's sister comfort him before Brian's coworker-crush-workplace situation.
Taylor wants Brian to lean on her, but she doesn't want Brian to touch her in a way that leaves her vulnerable either when she already feels so cracked open. Brian can't lean on her because he literally, physically had to drag his actual human body back from being literal flayed nerves and exposed organs and if he stops holding himself together now he feels like he will die. They are drinking tea and water on the couch watching terrible TV they can barely hear while not talking or looking at each other because it's all they can handle. They even cared about each other!
In the world of Worm, connecting to another cape's power is in some ways arguably connecting directly to their most vulnerable trauma, right?
[completely and utterly shamelessly] Hey does anyone else miss aisha and alec. anyway great post very true all of your posts are a treat. its so so agonizing how theyre 2 people who are so incapable of vulnerability or leaning on other people so their relationship is just like. sitting side by side in misery obliquely acknowledging each other
