I'm loving this new trend of people going to zoos and participating in animal enrichment. We use to observe large exotic animals for our entertainment, but the fact is that we are now trying to make ourselves equally as entertaining for them. It's interactive, completely parpicipatory and I would argue that eventually someone's gonna come up with something new enough that it expland ethologists understanding about how some animals think, problem solve, communicate and feel and I think its fantastic.
Human: play?
Aquatic creature from an entirely different branch of the animal tree: play!

Because sometimes we all just need to see a guy head-bump a beautiful Beluga whale
Note: that is not a lumberjack!!! Most likely it is a domesticated marine biologist, possibly a domesticated fisherman, (you can tell because it has been clothed in wool, which stays warm when wet, so it is is clearly well cared for).
While this may be appropriate enrichment for your DOMESTICATED and WELL TRAINED marine biologist or fisherman, please remember that lumberjacks may be tame, but are not domesticated. They are still wild, and they absolutely will freak out if they see you swimming around in their forests.
did you write this notice for the belugas or
Who else would I write it for? It’s not like orcas care about ethical wildlife photography.
I'm so old i remember when people liked using Windows
That's because they stuck these bad boys to them
Oh wow, that IS better.
Welcome to Earthsea!
You're Tenar, visiting her old friend Fan, who got his name after his biggest treasure—a beautiful fan with the painting of Havnor port and its people. But there is a secret other side to it that you've never seen:
"Dragons moved as the folds of the fan moved. Painted faint and fine on the yellowed silk, dragons of pale red, blue, green moved and grouped, as the figures on the other side were grouped, among clouds and mountain peaks."
"She did so, and saw the two sides, the two paintings, made one by the light flowing through the silk, so that the clouds and peaks were the towers of the city and the men and women were winged, and the dragons looked with human eyes."
The 2026 Gender Census is now open!
[ survey.gendercensus.com ]
The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!
[ Link to survey ]
PS: You can see some regularly-updated statistics about incoming data here, with lots of demography and graphs to peruse!
Treating plural systems the same as genderfluid individuals for this is still pluralphobic. You are still inherently excluding systems like you did last year.
Stop hiding behind progressive language. "I dont want plurals to participate in this unless they mask as a singlet" is what you mean. Do better. This is not inclusive. You are not being inclusive.
Out of curiosity how would you treat a question like 2a (photo below) in a situation where plural people could answer once per system member (if that is the wrong term please yell at me). the particularly relevant part is point 3 "imagine it is for something semi permanent such as a credit/debit card, medical record, or a driver's license" which are things I think are normally once per body.
Also If people want to read the read more on the issue post linked in the origional image here it is

It's not "hostile" to binary trans people. Binary trans people are just not the target group. They are intentionally not represented at all. It's not a study about binary people.
This is the very first thing on the first page of the survey:
Who can participate? This survey intends to collect information from everyone who ISN'T adequately described by the "gender binary". According to the binary model of gender, everyone fits tidily into just one of these categories: ● Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely ↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey) ● Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely ↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey) Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate.
Seems like you should call it something else then like the non binary survey
Obviously you are allowed to vent on your own blog, and I didn't realise you didn't want responses that might clarify/clear up confusion and mistakes - sorry about that!
Seems like you should call it something else then like the non binary survey
I've got a thing in the FAQ that kind of relates to this a bit:
I have to avoid words like “binary” and “nonbinary” in the criteria for who is invited to take part, in order to be fully inclusive and avoid bias.
Basically, there are a lot of people who are failed by the binary model of gender, who don't identify as nonbinary. And if you're studying how often people use a particular word, you can't really include that word in the marketing, because it biases the results.
Like, yes, we know that "nonbinary" is a word that a lot of people use to describe themselves, and the reason that data is in any way reliable is because it doesn't call itself "the nonbinary survey". Right?
Imagine:
Make a survey called the nonbinary survey
Have no criteria
Ask participants if they're nonbinary
100% of participants say they're nonbinary because they took part because it was called "the nonbinary survey" and they identify with that
Researcher declares all humans nonbinary
That wouldn't be very science 🧐
Anyway, I do try very hard to lean heavy on the not-binary part in promotional stuff, just because I don't want to waste anyone's time. But I have to do that very carefully because I don't want to bias the results.
Like the image with the boxes with the Mars and Venus symbols on, right? It doesn't say "male" and "female", it implies it. And It refers to the gender binary in simplified ways so that people who aren't familiar with queer theory will understand and jump in. But at the same time, a binary trans woman, for example, would be like, "well I do fit into that Venus box really. So, this is probably not for me." And if she doesn't say that, she is probably invited into the sample anyway!
And this text:
The survey is open to [...] feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Again, very carefully written to imply "not binary trans people" without saying it outright, because there will always be people in the grey area who do belong in the sample.
everytime i remember keir starmer i remember the really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really bad stock photo he was in that.
yeah.
nothing bad is gonna happen, Sir Kid Starver isnt real
Sir Kid Starver:
The children believe they are safe, unable to see the danger lurking around the corner. The Audience, however, sees the threat, and this is an example of Dramatic Irony. Kier Starmer sees the Audience, and his expression demands we keep quiet, an example of breaking the fourth wall.
Who wants to hear a DIY tiling pro tip that the experts won't tell you
Yes!
Do not drop your phone into the bucket of tile adhesive. This step is actually completely unnecessary and massively complicates the tiling process.
You say this but my uncle is a tiler and he swears by the “drop phone in putty bucket” technique. I think you’re just posting this for clout
Your uncle is caught up in a tradition that he was taught as an apprentice that he never questioned. Modern putty doesn't require phone, the formula has changed.
MY uncle says some customers still demand the phone putty technique because it "doesn't look right otherwise"
Drop an empty phone case in and those customers can't tell the fucking difference because there is no fucking difference.
My mum renovated houses for thirty years, she says “you’re half right, but in some cases - particularly in houses built before 1930 - the phone does add some benefit. Could be a tablet too if you’ve an old one in the garage. And anyone who says it’s got to be a particular model is just being precious about it, whatever the forums say.”
why do americans think everyone on the internet lives in the same place as them. just saw someone say honeybees are "not native". not native to where????? the entire planet?????
saw a photo of garlic mustard somewhere on the internet once and americans in the comments were like "fun fact this plant is invasive so you should definitely tear out any you see, WITH THE ROOTS so it won't spread!" whole fucking time i'm living in garlic mustard native range. i don't think i will be doing that.
This drives me absolutely up the wall in r/birdfeeding. Every time there's a picture of a house sparrow, the entire comments are filled with americans talking about them being invasive and how they should be basically killed on sight. But often OP has not provided a location, and house sparrows have a HUGE native range. Here in the UK they're not only native birds, they're on the decline, they need our help and protection.
Me every time I see a post saying that you should destroy your lawn and cram a bunch of native plants as closely together as you can instead. Look, I'm not saying lawns are native to Australia because they're not, but our native plants evolved to burn; they are dry, their leaves are dry, and they're full of oils. If you plant native plants the way Americans tell you to that's a fucking fire hazard and you are endangering yourself and your neighbours next time we have a Black Summer.
My friend @ryttu3k linked me a great PDF on planting a native Australian garden in such a way as to reduce its status as a fire hazard!
tapping onto this, Ry's guide is for a specific part of NSW. Australia is a very very big place and there is a lot of biodiversity. So don't take one guide as The One True Guide because I used to be a ranger and lemme tell you, trying to stuff native plants in terrains they are unsuited for just creates a mess for everyone. Honestly, just google "native planting <your council> " and they will have a guide that is specific to your area.

Any chance I get to talk about Guatemala, I take, and I can actually explain this picture!
So in the 19th century, a lot of Chinese immigrants started settling in Guatemala. I’m not sure why, but this newspaper article says it could be that the construction of trains happening at that time attracted Chinese immigrants that had already worked in the US during the gold rush. Regardless, by 1920 the census noted 990 legal Chinese residents in the country, tho it was probably higher due to unregistered immigrants.
Over time, this community continued to grow and they also, naturally, brought their cuisine into the country with Chinese restaurants gaining popularity. These restaurants, much like they did in the United States, combined local ingredients and tastes with traditional recipes.
This all led to chao mein (chow mein) becoming well know and loved as a staple of Guatemalan cuisine. I remember my own grandmother going to the local market to buy bags merchants made with vegetables chopped in long strips for making chao mein. There are many versions, like the chao mein tostadas which place it on top a crispy corn tostada, with cheese and cilantro on top:
Some common ingredients include: carrots, onions, celery, peppers, güisquil/chayote, and finally soy sauce and/or Worcestershire sauce which is usually just called salsa inglesa (english sauce). Ingredients are often renamed in Latin America for simplicity and based on common associations. In fact, soy sauce is sometimes also called salsa china.
You can actually see the recipe for Guatemalan chao mein in the back of the soy sauce container next to the Worcestershire sauce:
Chao mein is so popular with Guatemalans that Guatemalan restaurants in the United States will often have it as part of the menu. These sauces were probably made for Guatemalans outside the country to enjoy some traditional Guatemalan chao mein! ¡Que chilero!
My local Guatemalan import underground grocery store has this incredible Salsa Inglesa with a racist caricature of a British man and it is the best gluten free Worcestershire sauce alternative in existence
I want to see the racist caricature of a British man on the salsa inglesa bottle so badly. Can you please share
