I never saw TVL as camp, and have no idea where people got the impression it was ever going for this (if someone from the writers room said it, I fear they've misunderstood what they've actually achieved here). What I see they have done is trying to be emulation of every kind of prestige/modern tv cliche, but badly, to critique it all as 'trash' by being 'trash' itself in all the ways it sees are these bad directions modern television has gone in.
Dreamlike motifs which add little but aesthetic value, multiple timelines, one particular plot which has almost nothing happen in it, so much incest, major developments all left in the implied, unnecessary amounts of violence, and highly stylized dialogue are things I notice being implemented to do this. And they do, BECAUSE these are all things Interview also did but WELL. So, it is more of a self referential parody critique of itself, really. A meta retelling to texture the show in tandem to Lestat's desire to tear apart the book, and therefore the prior installments, through his own retelling. It is a trashing. As much as Lestat is intending to do it, it happens, even on his own story.
This is different than camp because camp is separate, indeed opposite, from what is trash, and especially TO trash something. As it, by definition, can never consider that anything is trashy. 'defying contemporary conventions through theatrically upstaging or denying it footing at every turn as the highest celebration of life.' and 'that which dies as itself the moment it comes into an understood fruition, as to itself become a convention, must always reinvent what it is'. is much different than, 'your shit, which is my shit, sucks, I'm going to do it worse to show you how it sucks.' and 'I am purely self referential as to not invent anything, but instead merely kill off the idea there should be anything worth celebrating at all.'
If by intent to do this, this is also maybe the reason why, perhaps subconsciously, this show is no longer written queerly, or very POC centered. As both these things are closely related to ideas of what real camp is. However, in TRASH, you simply do get a reinvention of the very conventions you're trying to criticize, if it can even be seen as a criticism at all.
