one thing about hatching 2022 i forgot to mention is that i liked that Mother's brand of toxicity didn't involve her being a boymom or specifically resenting her daughter for being too much like herself (we don't end up discovering anything deep about Mother, because her entire identity is a performance). Mother, in this case, prizes daughters over sons. we see how possessive she is of the babygirl of a widower she's having an affair with, calling it "hers", despite not being official with tero. and neglects/rejects her son to a shocking degree for being the spitting image of the husband she holds so much contempt for. tinja is invested in over her brother because she looks like Mother, someone who only ever favours herself. investing in your daughter in becoming the perfect feminine ideal, however, is on the opposite end of the harmful parenting spectrum, because perfectionism is impossible to describe, let alone achieve, leaving tinja with the feeling that she is never doing enough.
