Chapter Two: Stay For the Night
Mari is self-immolating in turns, alternating between low-stakes embarrassment from guilelessly interacting with Stephen Strange, and a solid chunk of high-stakes pain. Itās not usually this bad, but sheād essentially lost her ability to tune it out during the month and a half of chronic relief, and sheās without the āpain maintenanceā spells she used to cast on herself throughout the day. She is the coldest of turkeys right now.
The spell the Ancient One cast to strip her of all chronics has made her magically volatile for a few hours, so all she can do is endure. Wong had offered to try a relief spell anyway, but Mari doesnāt want to risk it. She sends him out of the room and walks around in circles, adjusting to the familiar creaks and groans. It would be easier with her cane, but it's buried in the back of her wardrobe along with some things she doesn't want another soul to ever see.
She has almost changed her mind by the time Wong and Master Mordo tap on the door to relay that the Ancient One has more to tell her.
Mari pictures the sunlit Sanctuary. āOf course.ā
āIām still willing toāā Wong starts to offer.
āItās okay. Iāve always wanted to be in a fairy tale, and it looks like todayās is The Little Mermaid,ā she quips. At Mordoās confusion, she adds, āThe sea witch takes the mermaidās voice and gives her legs, but each step on dry land is like a thousand knives. Itās supposed to be worth the price, to marry the Prince.ā
Wong hurriedly excuses himself and Mordo coughs nervously as he casts a portal. Itās been a long time since a self-deprecating reference has gone that poorly for her, but it has been a weird day.
They step out into a room she recognizes as the New York Sanctum Sanctorumās library, thankfully complete with chairs.
āStephen?ā the Ancient One calls out toward the open doorwayāand Mariās traitorous heart leaps at the thought of seeing him again.
āIām repairing the damage. Do you really need me toāā
āYes. Do not be unkind.ā
Strange walks in with a dust-smudged face, his expression full of rebellion. āWell, when you put it like thatā¦ā
āTake a seat.ā
His eyes sweep the room and fixate on her, his insolent body language stiffening into brow-furrowed worry.
Mari feels a pang of concern. Did⦠the Zealot (she cannot bring herself to name him, even in her own mind) do something else to her? Something that made her dangerous?
āThere is another spell, yes,ā the Ancient One says gently.
āI hate when you know what Iām thinking,ā she sighs. āAm I radioactive, a ticking time bomb, what?ā
āMaybe some of the last one,ā Master Mordo says under his breath.
āDoes he have to be here?ā Strange asks, glowering at the sorcerer standing in the shadows of the room.
āI appear to be the only one speaking sense!ā Mordo challenges.
āEnough,ā the Ancient One says, placing both of her hands flat on the table in front of her and speaking in an oddly ceremonial voice. āThe London Sanctum has fallen, but thanks to Master Strange, this Sanctum is still intact. In the process, he has frightened the Zealotsā leader, leading to todayās attack in the Cavern.ā Her gaze shifts to Mari. āItās become clear that you were specifically targeted.ā
āWe donāt have time for this!ā Strange interrupts, standing. āCast the binding again. While sheās here.ā
āYou have to be in alignment,ā the Ancient One protests, but she rises to her feet as well.
Strange speaks with reckless fury. āWhat kind of alignment? Do you even know? Emotional? Physical?ā
āMust you argue this now, of all times? The two of you must be released from the handfast!ā Master Mordo booms, striding over to stand beside Mariās chair. āShe is here, now, and you can only bicker while our enemy is out there scheming.ā
The three Sorcerers start arguing louder and louder, repeating the words āsacrifice,ā āattack,ā and āhandfast,ā to Mariās worry and confusion.
Master Strangeās voice breaks through the din, magically amplified. āI wish to speak with Master Lewis alone.ā
āThat would be best,ā The Ancient One says with as much exasperation as Mari has ever heard from her before. She watches as Master Mordo jogs after her, still upset.
Strange frowns as he watches them leave. āI didnāt want to do it this way.ā
His words are the final drop in the mental cup of water Mariās been holding for hours without explanation.
āDo what which way?ā she demands. āBoth Master Mordo and the Ancient one used the word āsacrificeā just now. Am I to be sacrificed for your good behavior somehow? And what is this about a ābinding spell?āā She canāt read his thoughts, but his lips are set to a thin line, and she can see a vein straining in his neck.
āI suppose it is a sacrifice of sorts. The the spell that binds me to this building's defense has failed twice.ā He looks apologetic. āThe, ah, attacker at Rinchen cast a proxy handfasting spell. A married man cannot be Master of the Sanctum.ā
āMarried? Without either of us knowing? How is that possible?ā Mari whispers, entranced and flabbergasted. Sheās heard the phrase ācanāt rub two brain cells together,ā and now she fully understands the feeling. Granted, her cognition is currently hampered by a cloud of electric blue butterflies spreading romantic euphoria, but the theory is the same.
Strange is already ranting again. āāso convinced it has to be me. She could simply choose someone else and order me there to assist! Thereās no reason to put you through this farce."
āHas anyone confirmed this?ā she asks in a small voice. āAre you sure the only way the binding could fail is⦠well, if youāve been magically married? And sheās sure itās me?ā
āThereās a confirmation spell,ā Strange says, patting at the folds of his robes before pulling out a piece of parchment. āThatās why I asked the others to leave, but we should hurry. Youāll need to stand here.ā He points to a place on the floor close to him.
Mari gets up, cringing at her earlier Little Mermaid comments and wondering if a person could turn into sea froth out of sheer embarrassment. āThis cannot be real.ā
Strange seems completely engrossed by the paper with the discernment spell on it. āHmm? Ah. Looks like we start palm to palm.ā
Sea froth it is! Mari thinks to herself. Sea froth and blue butterflies.
She closes her eyes seconds before placing her right hand against his left, commanding herself to ignore the thrill of deliberate physical contact. After admiring his magical skill and confidence from afar, Mari canāt quite believe theyāre both caught in this whirlwind. She can tell the result of this spell will sweep her off her feet, but sheās powerless to stop it.Ā
Mari sways, her balance unsteady, and Strange moves his own thumb to catch hers, startling her eyes open.
āMimic me, stupid as this is,ā he grumbles, tipping his head toward her as the sparkling gold symbols pour from his casting hand to circle above them. Overcome, Mari closes her eyes as their foreheads touch, completing the magical circuit.
An honest-to-God bell chimes with a recognizable Mystic resonance, and the golden sparks morph into white ones, cascading over their shoulders. Strange rears his head back almost immediately, shielding his eyes with his free hand, while leaving the other thumb-clasped to hers.
āWell, thatāsāā He starts the sentence in a tone of utter derision.
Mari knows what kind of word heās going to say. Ridiculous. Outrageous. Awful. Unacceptable.
Strange looks her full in the face, his expression cycling through a multitude of emotions before landing at wonder. āNew,ā he breathes.
Itās probably the most romantic moment of her entire life, and it was prompted by cultist bent on the destruction of the entire planet. She pulls her hand free and takes an unsteady step back.
The action seems to knock him out of his daze, and Strange clears his throat. "Well. Remind me to conveniently erase the surveillance footage of the last fifteen minutes before Wong gets ahold of it."
Mari smiles at his joke, but inwardly, her mind is fueled by an odd sort of protective adrenaline. Itās inconceivable that she could be randomly chosen for him in a room of a hundred other optionsāand given the Sorcerer casting the spell, if it wasnāt a coincidence, then it must be negative for Strange.
She will not let that man use her as a weapon, and right now, her feelings feel dangerous.
Mariās butterflies flutter a silent apology in her chest as she smiles sweetly and says, āYeah, as first dates go, that was pretty terrible.ā
Stephenās canāt tell if her smile is meant to soften or worsen the words, but he spins away from her, deliberately raking his hand over his face and up into his hair. The sting from the cuts offer clarity.
āWeāre playing directly into his hands,ā he says gruffly, turning back toward Lewis. āHe and his cultists will be coming back any moment to take advantage of⦠whatever this is.ā
āWell, feel free to call back the troops,ā she says, starting toward the bookshelves.
āWeāre not done talking about this. Come back,ā he says sternly.
āI donāt recall a vow to obey,ā Lewis sasses over her shoulder. The mischievous light in her eyes prompts a rush of fledgeling affection that stops him dead in his tracks.
Stephen curses the base human instinct to bow to norms; he just confirmed that this woman is (unexpectedly, bewitchingly) his wife, and now heās proud of her spirit. Fuck.
āThis library will have the Book of Ours, Iām just going to check it.ā
āThe book of what?ā
āOurs. Itās a joke. None of us bother to pronounce the real name. āOurs,ā as in, itās the rulebook for āus.ā Iām surprised no one mentioned it to you.ā
āI would have probably forced everyone learn the word,ā Stephen reluctantly admits, losing sight of her in the stacks.
As he sidles through a section of tomes so large they leave only six inches between their opposing spines, Stephen gains a new appreciation for Wongās shelving system. He comes out only feet away from Lewis and sees that sheās writing in a small notebook. A sly little smile forms on her face, and before he can announce his presence, Lewis is yelling a snarky remark.
āYouāre not lost in the grooming section are you?ā
āGrooming?ā he queries, amused by the way she jumps in surprise to find him standing so nearby.
āYou cannot tell me you donāt spend time on that facial hair,ā Lewis says, giving him a once-over that triggers a ripple of goosebumps.
Subject. Change.
āWhat did you find?ā
She thrusts a tome toward him and says, āItās there, under my thumb. Probably only time I have any kind of advantage over those words.ā
Stephen takes the book and starts to read. With each sentence, resignation and relief fight for dominance, until he lowers it and looks at her.
āHow do you feel about this?ā
āAbout your beard, or the book?ā Lewis asks, scrunching her face up and apologizing. āSorry. Iām punchdrunk onāI donāt know, everything,ā she sighs. āOkay, it says 'alignment' is a sense of shared purpose and respect. We definitely agree on keeping the Sanctum safe, and as for respect..." She makes a face. "After doing so many deep dives into spellbooks, sometimes the scribe assumes everyone knows the full breadth of their current-use definition, which is now lost to time. Like how we donāt know what certain historical farm animals look like because everyone was so used to them no one bothered to draw any.ā
āReally?ā
āReally. So here's hoping 'respect' isn't code for something weirdly intrusive.ā Lewis goes to stand up, and Stephen instinctively offers his hand. Both hold their inches-distant positions for a long moment, and she bites her lip. āToo soon, maybe.ā
He scoffs, then tries a joke when she gets up unassisted. āYou saw the proximity requirement?ā
Sheās whip smart and already on her way put the book back. āDonāt worry, itās in Egyptian cubits, not Roman ones.ā
There isn't actually a proximity requirement, but heās going to have to look those measurements up, and the blatant amusement in her voice implies she can tell.
Shit, Stephen thinks to himself. Itās the third āshitā today in regards to this woman, and he knows it wonāt be the last. Thereās just no way in any dimension he can call her āwife,ā even in his own mindāand heāll be damned if he gives her the advantage of knowing he canāt navigate the Sanctum library.
Foes and friends alike have spent the day exerting power over him, and Stephenās really fucking sick of it.
Itās with this thought boiling through his mind that he steps out from the shelves to find Master Mariposa Lewis leaning against one of the structural columns, eyes squeezed shut, her hands in fists at her sides. She looks the same way he feelsāhelpless and manipulated.
Every negative emotion drains away. He wants to tell her sheās not alone in her frustration, but, Goddamnit, this is not the common ground he wants to seek with her.
Stephen forces himself to turn around, walking a few paces into the stacks before backing up and saying, loudly, āIām going to have to apologize to Wong for teasing him about his space-wasting bookshelves.ā
He pauses his position until he hears the rustle of fabric and a barely audible sniffle.
āAll right,ā he says with false cheerfulness, clasping his hands together. āHow do we prove the wholeā¦ā Stephen rolls his pointer fingers in an inclusive circle.
āNo matter what it is, we should find the boss,ā Lewis says.
āāThe boss?ā Have you ever called her that to her face?ā Stephen asks, following her down the hallway toward the center staircase. She stops long enough for him to catch up to her and gives him a look. Itās a perfect replica of the expression the Ancient One makes when asked a stupid question, and he bursts out into genuine laughter.
āIs that you, Strange?ā Mordoās voice is very far away.
āWe need to prove we can work together,ā she whispers; āābut I bet you were one of those āstick the nerdy kid with all the workā students.ā
Heās still chuckling at her impression. āNot quite.ā
āI refuse to believe you were the one standing in the middle of the room presenting. You'd take up the whole class period. The teacher would never let you.ā
āColder.ā
Lewis looks at him with narrowed blue eyes before they widen in mock outrage. āYou did all the work at the very last second, didnāt you? Youād wait and then be brilliant! You asshole!ā
Her rage is luminous, and Stephen once again feels himself warming to her by several degrees at once. Something shifts in his mind, as if the tiny moment of relaxation has allowed him to think critically again.
āWait!ā he gasps.
Several concepts from the last few minutes coalesce, emulsifying with several ingredients already there. He can almost see them flying around his head like a petal-bent version of his mind palace in the mirror dimension: the chronic spells, their hurried trips back and forth to the Sanctum, wishing there was a limit on astral projection inside it. He ācomes toā with a possibly brilliant idea that hinges almost entirely on the woman waiting patiently beside him.
Stephen clasps her shoulder, needing to be physically grounded in this moment. āHow esoteric can a chronic spell get? Could you prevent spellcasting in an area, like a shield orāā
āāa portal!ā she finishes with him almost breathlessly. āYes! Yes. Run and tell her? I need to grab my notes.ā Lewis pulls out her Sling Ring, reaching up absently to squeeze his hand at her shoulder before starting to cast.
As Stephen jogs toward where he heard Mordoās voice, he ignores the voice in his head that reminds him how long since heād been touched with such casual intimacy.
Itās easy to find her notes about the portal-blocking chronic, because itās only been two months since she worked it all out. Ansen Struek hadnāt stayed in Kamar-Taj long enough to master the Mystic Arts, but he certainly had mastered the art of stalking her. Who would have known her desperate bid to keep him from snooping in her room would end up so useful?
Her only consolation is that the notebooks she knows he stole from her werenāt the useful ones, which she keeps in her closet, not her small desk. Anyone could have written out the translations and notations sheād made from the tomes sheād been studying, but her conclusions and spell creations are her own. Mari grabs the relevant notebook and grabs some clothes from her laundry basket to further hide the box it came from. That done, she pictures the top of the stairwell in the New York Sanctum and starts to circle up a portal.Ā
Everyone stops talking when she arrives. The three Sorcerers walk up the stairs toward her; Strange conjures up a glowing gold whip that latches onto a small empty podium that he swings to a position about a foot away. Itās at the right height to lay out her notebook.
āWow, thanks,ā she says, feeling a little thrill at the crooked half-smile he offers in response. Itās a touch smug, but they did agree to present a picture of synchronicity. The sooner the Ancient One attempts the Sanctum binding spell again, the better.
āI should warn you, this whole incantation is a bit intricate, and the larger the area, the more one has to sacrifice either duration or expended power,ā Mari warns.
āIndividual power?ā Strange asks.
āHow wide an area?ā Mordo says, at the same time.
The Ancient One holds her observation until theyāre done speaking. āI presume the duration is significant enough to be worth the effort?ā
āI appreciate the enthusiasm,ā Mari says, catching Strangeās meaningful look at the podium and understanding the āclass presentationā in-joke right away. āI used to cast this once a week for my single room, so I imagine a day might be feasible for a space like the main atriumābut, I had a thought. Arenāt there restrictive spells for certain areas? Maybe we could combine the two, at least at first?ā
āA no-manās land,ā Mordo muses.
The Ancient One starts to pace, looking troubled. āIt is no small thing to deny access to a Sanctum.ā
āTo our enemies? When the alternative is killing them in self defense before they kill us?ā Strange bursts out.
Mordo looks from the Ancient One to Strange and back, his expression stricken as he begins to back away. āTell me, Master Lewis,ā he says in a voice thick with dread, āāwhat exclusion mechanism does this spell require? Might it be related to the Dark Dimension?ā
Strange lets out a short breath, his head dipping down, but the Ancient Oneās chin lifts, her eyes hard. The atmosphere of the Sanctum turns decidedly cold.
āIf itās a common characteristic between all of the attackers, yes,ā she says.
āIt is true, isnāt it?ā Master Mordo chokes out. āYou draw power from the Dark Dimension!ā
Heās looking at the Ancient One.
āYou have no concept of the burdens I carry,ā she asserts, her usual calm tone deep with warning.
āYou could share them,ā Strange says simply. āIn all your long life, is that the last lesson to be learned?ā
Too late, Mari realizes that the Ancient One is both physically and morally cornered, given that theyāre all arrayed around her. Itās the kind of position that makes a person desperate, even one with as much power as the Ancient One.
āWhat about the binding spell?ā Mari asks in a small voice, as much begging as offering a distraction.
āSo be it. If you wish to share power, Master Strange, here is your chance!ā The Ancient Oneās hands move swiftly, casting a spell whose symbols seem to temporarily rend the floor with their passing. Mari and Mordo retreat back against the wall, but Strange stands resolute, his new red Cloak billowing in the mystic wind. Finally, the crimson and gold meld together into a shape identical to the Sanctum towerās large circular window, which advances toward the defiant sorcerer.
It collides with his chest in a deluge of magical fireworks, forcing Strange to brace himself. What Mari didnāt expect was for the symbol to continue through him. Mesmerized, she holds still and gasps when the glowing magic strikes her, releasing red and gold sparks with the same intensity as before.
Mari presses both hands to her chest, making shocked eye contact with her husband, who had wheeled around to watch the orbās progress. His expression shifts into a silent, oddly gentle apology before he moves back to face āthe boss.ā
āDo what you must, Guardians,ā the Ancient One says, an undercurrent of resentment brimming beneath her commanding tone. She looks first at Strange, then turns her gaze specifically to Mari, her expression softening. āBe aware that I will be unable to tolerate this place, but I will still aid the fight. There is a point outside each Sanctum marked with a similar symbol. If you stand in that place and cast any of the Mystic Arts, I will sense itāand come.ā
Finally, she turns to Master Mordo, whose face is twisted with the disgust of betrayal. As the Ancient One speaks, she gestures to where Mari and Strange are standing. āMany have done the distasteful for what they view as the greater good. Even you.ā Mordo shakes his head, slowly at first and then faster, before making a hitched cry of distress. He turns and stalks away, continuing out the front door of the Sanctum without looking back.
Thereās a long pause, during which Mari struggles to keep her expression neutral, refusing to look over at Strange. He clearly knows whatās going on between the three of them, but the moment is too raw.
āI will be in my study. Do not disturb me until tomorrow.ā
The Ancient One spins on her heel and walks away toward Kamar-Taj, the opposite direction from Mordo.
No one says anything until her footsteps fade away completely.
āSo, looks like weāre really married, then,ā Strange says sardonically. āKind of feels like neither parent is happy about it, either.ā
Mari cracks up despite herself. āI should not be laughing! Shame on you.ā He turns toward her with a smile that hits her hard; he looks devilish and relieved all at once, and she makes a production of turning around as if afraid he might corrupt her (he already has). āI may be the one with an arm tattoo, but you were definitely a pirate in another life!ā
āDoes that make you my stolen bride?ā Strange jokes.
Her steps toward the notes podium are as affected by mild emotional breakdown as they are from pain. āIām putting that comment on a shelf,ā Mari says, her attempt at āsternā sounding far too breathless for her liking. āA high one. We need to protect this place right away, and it seems like āweā means the two of us.ā
āIām sorry you were dragged into this, but right now Iām just grateful to have an uncomplicated ally,ā Strange says behind her, sounding tired.
Guilt blooms like a weed next to Mariās too-high pedestal for Stephen Strange, because sheās not uncomplicated at all, if her not-so-secret-after-all feelings for him are what prompted the handfast spell. Mari shelves that, too. Heāll have to think sheās so focused on protecting the Sanctum that she missed the compliment.
āRight. Well, obviously the whole atrium needs to be portal-toxic,ā she says briskly. āI can do this one, but I think Iāll need to sit by the door. Need to see the whole excluded space.ā
āMakes sense. Anything else I can do?ā Strange asks, hefting up a solid-looking wood chair. āTo save you the stress of wondering about it, Iāll ask to learn the spell after half-past Dire oāclock.ā
Heās faster down the stairs than she is, even carrying furnitureāthough Mari notices the Cloak tucking a fold of fabric under seat as if bearing up some of the load.
They settle on casting the anti-portal chronic in four places, mostly locations with open spaces. As swiftly as they can, the two of them take note of the places they can magically āboard upā with regular detection spells. Strange starts to refer to longer-lived non-chronic spells as ābinary,ā as most are an on/off condition. Certain spaces such as the kitchen and bedrooms can use the same binary spells as the Ancient Oneās study, with deactivating cantrips for anyone who actually belongs there.
By the time theyāre standing in the final hallway, Mari is starting to feel the strain of rushing around to secure everything. āShit. I just remembered weāll need to do this in the Hong Kong Sanctum!ā
āOh, didnāt I tell you? Mordo went straight to Master Minoru after he ragequit the argument. While I was near the gateway Minoru gave me a message that sheās covered her Sanctum in various spells, but would be happy for you to add a few chronics,ā Strange says, opening one of the three doors in the dead-end hallway, peeking in, and shutting it behind him. āA study. Looks like maybe Drumm was in there before the attack today.ā
Mari pictures the fallen Sorcerer with a pang. Sheād only met him once or twice, when he visited Wong in the library; she hasnāt met Tina Minoru at all yet.
āSheās got one hell of a reputation. My instinct would be not to wake her up twice in only a few hours,ā she points out. āGlad I donāt have to calculate the time difference with a brain pickled in stress. They're a flat 12 hours ahead of us, and that's a reminder that itās past time to eat dinner.ā There are only a few rooms left to go through, and she steps closer to the nearest door.
āAt the risk of feeding dinner to the elephant in the room, weāll both need to live at the Sanctum.ā He heads down the hallway toward the last room they havenāt checked, still speaking somewhat over his shoulder. āWe can take turns gathering things, but if you donāt have any combat training, I think you should go first. You can ask some colleagues to wait with you while Iām gone.ā
Mari pauses with her hand on the doorknob, the persistent ache in her legs now overshadowed by the sharp stab of fear in her chest. āCombatā¦ā she whispers. āFuck.ā
That gets Strange to turn around, and she can see that heās trying to suppress a smile.
āItās not funny! Iām abysmal at hand-to-hand, despite keeping up with upper body strength training. The thought of my life depending on itāā
āIām sorry, I didnāt expect you to beā¦ā He interrupts, clearly struggling not to outright laugh.
āOut with it.ā
He looks impish. āOffensive.ā
āVery clever,ā she deadpans, but his amusement is infectious. āYou have to admit, if anything deserves a good āfuck,ā itās this situatāā Mari gasps, eyes wide. āOh my God. Forget I said that.ā
Strange gestures to the cuts on his face. āYou never know, you might do better than I did. Maybe we could spar, gain practice?ā
The Sanctum clock starts to chime. They maintain eye contact through the whole thing, and Mari canāt help but notice theyāre standing next to the Sanctumās bedrooms. Sheās done her best over the past hours to see him more as a lab partner than a man, but itās not working.
After the sixth clang, she whispers, āThe elephant is trumpeting, and I donāt know how prepared I am to live on the savanna.ā
Strangeās lip curves up on one side, a sober but kind expression on his face. āMe either, but Iām glad for the company.ā Then he walks over to her, his right hand extended as he says, āIām Stephen.ā
Already, her heart is adding floors to his pedestal, the one right next to her overgrown guilt garden. It feels deceptive to act like he is as much a stranger to her as she is to him, but she doesnāt want to add to the stress of the day. Thatās not what a good wife does, right?
Straight to hell, Mari. Thatās where youāre going!

Chapter One: The Melody Begins
Not for the first time, a dazed Stephen Strange follows the Ancient One through one phase of his life into another. As he and Master Mordo cross into the disarray of the New York Sanctum, they step on the golden sparks she leaves in her wake.
He wonders if sheās harnessing the mystic arts to anoint him as the Sanctumās protector or girding herself against the Zealots' return. Either way, itās an effective distraction from their argument about her willing immortality and his unwillingness to kill.
āYou defended the New York Sanctum from attack. With its Master gone, it needs anotherā¦ā
The remembered words crash through his mind, washing through every secret, serene space heās curated in the past months. Floating in the debris thatās left is the body of the man he killed. How could Stephen see this promotion as anything other than a reward for taking a life? If his attacker had walked into the hospital instead of projected, would Nick West have been called on to figure out his cause of death?
āStrange!ā Mordo says sharply, throwing an arm out in front of him. Heād almost blindly followed the Ancient One off the broken edge of a stairwell, without the magic that kept her walking steadily across the void.
She throws her hands wide, twisting them in a sparkling flurry of gold and crimson symbols, while never dipping from her solid position in midair. The sparks coalesce into a shape heād seen mirrored in the architecture of the Sanctum itself, but before he can ponder this, the glowing magic swoops toward him.
āSteady,ā Mordo whispers, even as he backs away. He neednāt have bothered; the colors twist into an oily black and dissipate halfway through their journey.
His mentor floats over in a graceful arc. āWell, that is unexpected.ā
Stephenās relief is generous enough to prevent a snarky āI told you so.ā He shoots a look back at Mordo and beckons. āLooks like itās your turn!ā Instead of joining in his jest, the other man throws his hands up in frustration and retreats.
āI had not thought you married,ā the Ancient One murmurs.
āWhat?ā Stephen gasps, but she ignores him, choosing instead to start the incantations again, colors erupting like fireworks from her fingertips.
Baffled, he thinks through the last few interactions he had with Christine Palmer, immediately rejecting the notion that sheād taken advantage without him knowing. Their familiarity and shared trust is far from legally binding, and his selfish tantrum during recovery had stamped out all embers of romance. āMarried? Not a chance,ā he adds, just in time for the oily-looking black symbol to rebound off of the air a few inches from his chest.
āAnd yet,ā the Ancient One says enigmatically, tipping her head toward the magical remnants as they twinkle out of existence.
āI promise youāā
The sound of running feet interrupts them, and Stephen turns to see Mordo and another robed sorcerer racing toward them.
āAttack!ā the young man gasps out, bending over to rest his hands on his knees as if heās run a race.
āKaecilius appeared in the Rinchen Cavern among the trainees,ā Mordo says, laying a gentle hand on the messengerās shoulder. āRahir says he appeared through a portal, cast something on the group, and left.ā
The Ancient One walks over, speaking quickly in a language Stephen doesnāt know. Instead of translating, she next turns to Master Mordo, gesturing deeper into the Sanctum in response to his nodding assent.
Impatient, Stephen searches his memory for any protection spells they can use to fortify Kamar-Taj itself, in preparation for another attack. Is their adversaryās persistence fueled by the Dark Dimension? If so, would Dormammu limit that power to Kaecilius alone, or are they about to face an army of tireless cultists bent on their destruction?
āRahir, take your rest, but tell me, what color was Kaeciliusās spellcast?ā their leader says, spinning up a portal to the dormitories.
āThe blue of the clearest sky, lighting up each crystal in the Cavern as if with sunbeams. It seemed to turn everyone mindless.ā the man says, earning a nod of concern before he steps through.
āCome,ā the Ancient One tells Stephen, walking briskly toward the gateway to Kamar-Taj. āBest not to alarm anyone by casting another portal to access the Cavern.ā
Stephen matches her quick pace, looking down at the Eye of Agamotto still hanging around his neck. He senses that heās needed, but a similar flicker of fear to the one before his first emergency neurosurgery pierces through. There's no reversing course, but would it even be possible to wind himself back to before he gained the knowledge to use it?
āA dangerous thought,ā the Ancient One notes as they walk, startling him with her discernment. At his reaction, she adds, āSome urges are obvious and universal, Stephen.ā
A surge of resentment pushes him to say, āRegretting your long life? Or, I hope, the means of acquiring it?ā
āSo eager to discuss your perception of my choices,ā she chastises; āPerhaps a deflection from your own?ā
āI am not a killer, and I am not married,ā he bites out, furious.
āPerhaps. Supposing you are, could it be that both were choices made for you as a means of survival?ā
Stephen throws his hands up in utter disgust as they cross the courtyard. āMaybe youāve been a bit sheltered in the past few centuries, but here in 2017, it helps not to be cryptic when youāre asking someone to die to save the world!ā
The Ancient One smiles. āIt helps, but it is not necessary.ā She gives him a long moment to stew on that before metaphorically prodding him again. āKaeciliusās choice to lay traps rather than escape exposes his fear of you.ā
Stephen doesnāt stop, wary of the way his explosive anger mixes with her earlier threat to tread carefully. āYouāre wrong. He treated me like a gnat.ā
āA gnat who restrained him with the Crimson Bands?ā She steps past him through the passage doorway, adding, āOnce freed, he directly sought to curtail your power to resist him. Yours in particular. Tell me, would the Sanctumās binding spell have failed a mere twenty-four hours ago?ā
āYouāre saying he showed up, pointed a spell at somebody, and now itās everyoneās problem?ā
āThe Sanctumās binding spell is quite clear. Unless cast on both, as equal Masters with mutual intent, the spell will fail. Kaecilius seems to have sought a newcomer for a proxy handfast spell, thinking that preventing you from being its protector makes the Sanctum vulnerable.ā
āWhy are you so determined it has to be me? Is there a power advantage that comes from being appointed Master of a Sanctum?ā
āYouāll soon find out.ā
āWell if itās all the same to you, Iād like a little more clarity and a lot less blind handwaving,ā he snaps, stalking past her toward the passage doorway. The Cloak of Levitation appears to agree, furling about him like heās the star of some kind of vampiric melodrama.
Mariposa Lewis was named for a Sequoia Grove and an explorer. Her mother likes to tell people that when Mari found this out at the age of 10, she declared she'd open a bakery in a big city and never go on vacation. Her rebellious streak took a hit when she developed a love for climbing as a teenager, but by the time she attended college in Colorado (to be close to the climbing scene, of course), her unusual name carried a level of outdoorsy distinction, which softened the blow.
The John Muir tattoo in her fatherās distinctive script didnāt hurt, either. āThe clearest way to the universe is through a forest wilderness.ā Mariās favorite place to read it was when stretching her inked arm up for a handhold on a bright summerās day of climbing in Yosemite National park.
The biggest hit to that rebellious streak happened after her fall, not long past ten years of climbing. At age 27 she was still young and vital, and once told sheād never walk again, Mari stubbornly threw herself into recovery. She did walk, albeit poorly, and with the kind of pain that made Dr. Gregory House miserable and addicted to painkillers. She didnāt want to end up that way, even if the medicine did soften the edges of her agony.
For months, she tried almost everything to ease her pain, enduring judgey nursing staff, dismissive doctors, and endless medical bills with nothing to show for them.No amount of alternate treatment had the effect the pills did, and thanks to the ādrug seekingā note on her medical file, she was looking at a lifetime of fighting to access the medicine that made her feel whole again. The pain was immutable, and her rebellion did nothing but make her feel defeated.
That was what ultimately brought her to Kamar-Taj. Two years and much study later, Mari doesnāt mind her unsteady gait. Sheās surrounded by people who understand her struggles and donāt judge the appearance of limitation. Sheās achieved her goal: to mitigate her chronic, agonizing pain. Beyond that, why harness magic to walk when she could choose to glide or fly instead?
A keen scholar, Mari rediscovered an ancient, almost forgotten discipline within the Mystic Arts. Many of the translations were lost to time, so she coined the term āchronic incantations.ā These are spells that last many hours, days, or perhaps even longer, depending on the words used and the skill of the Sorcerer. Right now sheās sitting on seven weeksā worth of pain mitigation without any further intervention.
While most of the Mystic Arts display a golden hue, the chronic ones flare a fleeting, glorious sky blueāthe same color as the spell that lit up the Cavern while she was instructing a group of acolytes less than a half hour ago.
Only a few people in the Cavern had reacted with hostility, casting shield spells that protected them from what sheās pretty sure was a mass Pacification spell. Even that conclusion took over ten minutes to puzzle out through thoughts that feel soaked in molasses. It's clear that the spell is keeping everyone milling about in quiet conversations, calm and indifferent. No one has even tried to leave.
Every so often, an icy trickle of alarm stirs deep in her gut, but it disappears as soon as she notices it.
Mari is willing herself to walk toward the exit when the Ancient One steps through, followed by Stephen Strange, the man her thoughts have been consumed with for months. She has avoided him for almost as long, frightened by the strength of her crush (and, quite frankly, intimidated by his forceful personality). Up until now Mariās done a good job of staying out of his way; it figures that heās the one whoās come to untangle their current predicament.
Sure enough, the Ancient One calls the instructors over to confer. Master Weiss identifies her as 'someone who seems to care about... something,' and she steps forward.
In a hazy way, Mari remembers that she usually hides her feelings for Strange, sometimes even releasing her brown curls from their clip in order to hide her face as he walks by. Her spellbound nonchalance is at war with her drive to keep the secret, but for now, willpower is winning.
āI think weāve all been struck by a calming, pacifying spell,ā she begins earnestly. āA chronic one if I had to guess, and quickly, too. Only a few people cast shields or attacks.ā
āI suspected as much. Thatās your field of study, isnāt it, Master Lewis?ā the Ancient One asks. At Mariās nod, she continues; āDo the symbols indicate how long the spell is meant to last?ā
āSometimes,ā Mari says. āIt was very difficult to focus, but I did try. I remember wishing there was a surveillance camera so I could review them later.ā
āMaybe in fifty years,ā Strange quips.
The Ancient One lifts an eyebrow, her tone lightly amused. āWe do use video technology, mostly at the perimeter. Kamar-Taj is not slow to modernize in every aspect.ā She turns and asks the group something about a second spell. Mari doesnāt listen to the answers, too consumed by the experience of standing close enough to Strange that she can hear him muttering to himself.
āToo slow in banning non-consensual weddings.ā
Before Mari can fully parse the words, he gives her his full attention. āDid she say you study that spell type? Can you reverse it?ā
Mari nods, then winces. āMaybe. I did a lot of on/off testing with them, things like hair color and material transformation. When it comes to influencing human behavior, I wouldnāt know where to start, much less know how to ethically test anything.ā
āWait. There are ancient hair dye spells?ā he asks, incredulous.
All of this attention from Strange has converted her entire nervous system into ecstatic butterflies. Making fists and digging her fingernails desperately into her palms barely keep her from reacting like a moonstruck schoolgirl. Mari forces herself to take a deep breath before answering.
āNo, I created the spell. I needed to fully understand the language of the incantations to decipher the ones in the book.ā
Strangeās expression sharpens, his eyes narrowing with obvious academic interest. āGiven who just attacked, you might be a formidable weapon against him!ā He steps toward her, and Mari bites the inside of her cheek to stay focused. Something he just said makes her feel queasy, but she canāt quiteā
Bright golden sparks dance in random patterns on the ceiling, splitting into multiple swirls that speed off to every corner of the room.
The Ancient One claps her hands together, ceasing the sparks. She shouts, āIf you were at Kamar-Taj at the same time as Master Kaecilius, come to the center of the room.ā
Mariās throat closes up, and the spellās induced sense of calm turns ugly in her gut. She knows she must put as much distance as possible between herself and all reference to the enemy zealot. She covers her face with her hands and starts to run.
At any other time, sheād have the faculties to use the Mystic Arts to flee, but in her altered state, panic takes over. Her gait is precarious but headlong, chased by alarmed voices and a need to appease the twisting fear in her stomach. Each blind, unsteady step is held together only by the blessed lack of pain.
She makes it fifteen feet before she stumbles, caught by a tangle of fabric before she crashes to the ground.
Stephen had barely felt the Artifact detach from his neck, but he was relieved to watch it sail toward the distraught woman in time to prevent her crash to the uneven ground. As he and the Ancient One rush over, the magnitude of the ācalmingā spell comes into focus.
Only a handful of people seem to have even noticed the commotion. Even the group of instructors following them appear to be driven by curiosity rather than concern.
He arrives first. The Cloak of Levitation has decided heās the hero of the hour, and it contours itself in a way that ādeliversā the damsel in distress directly to his proffered hand. Her hesitation prompts the damned thing to push her toward him with a fold of fabric.
The Ancient One is brusque. āTo your knowledge, is anyone else affected by a chronic?ā
Stephen can feel the womanās whole body tremble through his grip on her hand, but her voice is strong and clear.
āNo. Do you need me to help casāā
āAn unaffected mind is best when releasing so many at once. It is unfortunate, but your situation necessitates a test of sorts,ā the Ancient One says, making eye contact with him and covertly tapping her sling ring before she continues; āYour time at Kamar-Taj overlapped with Kaecilius for a few months, is that correct?ā
The effect on the woman is immediate. She pitches forward in distress, falling to her knees before heās able to stop her. The Cloakās response is equally protective, but Stephenās seeing red in more ways than one. He spins up a furious portal to the library, glaring at the Ancient One.
āWeāre not done,ā he grits out before pulling the sobbing woman to his side and helping her through.
Their momentum takes him many paces into the main library before he stops to check on her, but she pulls away, stumbling over to the nearest bookshelves. The Cloak hovers behind her like a concerned nurse, and Stephen hears Wongās voice speaking an incantation.
A golden shield settles on the books nearest them.
Stephen canāt help himself. āSeriously?ā
āShe appears to be under your care, and these books are under mine,ā Wong says, a hint of resolute apology in his tone. āBody fluids can do much damage to those tomes.ā
āIf youāre that worried, unlock the Jamis room, will you?ā
āIn a moment.ā Wong sets a gentle hand on the womanās shoulder, speaking too softly for Stephen to overhear. She shudders but nods, letting him lead her over to the room in question. Once there, Wong shifts his support to the Cloak while he unlocks the door.
Stephen is affronted. Isnāt he the one most qualified to deal with a medical or mystical mystery? He strides over, catching the doorĀ before it locks him out.
The woman is seated with her head in her hands, and Wong walks over from an open antique cabinet with a thermometer, of all things. It seems that First Aid Kits are among the āmodernā advancements Kamar-Taj finds necessary.
The librarian doesnāt even look over at him. āWas she was in Rinchen whenāā
āAht!ā Stephen raises his hand. āShe was. The attackerās name acts as a curse. It makes her flee.ā
āUnderstood.ā Wong gestures toward Stephenās face. āGo clean yourself up. I donāt want blood on the carpet.ā
āDismissive, nice. I always knew you played favorites.ā
The alcohol wipes sting, but when he sees himself in the small mirror, Stephen winces. Heād been in a fight and looks it, just in time to meet whichever unfortunate soul Kaecilius decided to cast a proxy handfasting spell oā
āShit.ā
Itās her. No one else had reacted to the Zealotās name.
Wong looks up. āIf youāre needed elsewhereāā
āNo,ā Stephen croaks, taking in the womanās brown and black instructorās robes in context with the competent way sheād spoken in their brief exchange earlier. Even then she'd seemed spacey but interested, unlike the others in the cavern. āI, uh, need to speak with her. Alone.ā The two men share a long, steady look, and the librarian finally nods.
āIāll check back, Master Lewis,ā Wong says, his stiff posture softened by the way she clasps his hand.
āThank you,ā she says, at the same time Stephen growls a āThanks.ā
āIn ten minutes,ā Wong adds, shutting the door with a strong, somehow threatening thump.
āFirst things first,ā he starts, hearing the harsh tone and regretting it when he sees her flinch. During his first year residency heād been told he had 'the bedside manner of a starving goat.ā Stephen clears his throat and focuses on the shoulder length brown curls hiding her face from him. āI wonāt be saying his Name, but Iāll tell you mine. Stephen Strange.ā
She lets out a grateful little sigh. āYes. Mariposa Lewis.ā
āLike the sequoias,ā Stephen says, pleased in a way that feels very much like compliance. His instinct is to harden his heart, but that thought evaporates when she looks over and smiles.
āExactly. I had outdoorsy parents.ā Her eyes are blue, visibly so even in the dim light of the room.
Time for a subject change.
āDid you have a fever?ā he asks, to an answering shake of her head. āAny injuries? Your legs?ā
āLess āinjuredā than āpermanently unhealed,ā she tells him, shifting her position to face him without getting up. āThatās why Iām at Kamar-Taj.ā
āSame,ā he says, mentally stepping closer without moving a muscle.
A flutter of movement catches his eye, and he realizes that the Cloak is still hovering near her. Could an Artifact detect a marriage incantation? The Sanctumās binding spell certainly could.
With a surgeonās precision, he slices past that obstructive thought and says, āCan you tell me more about the spell, what did the Ancient One call it?ā
āChronic,ā Lewis says. āThey seem to tap into a wholly different aspect of the Mystic Arts. Maybe itās just the blue reminding me of ice, but I picture them coming from the arctic. Slower coming and going than the golden, fiery ones.ā Shifting her tone from academic fascination to hesitancy, she says, āWould you mind sitting down?ā
āOf course,ā he says, crossing to the other side of the table and pulling out a chair. Her brows furrow, and Stephen inwardly winces.
If heās right about the handfast, he wonāt be able to keep it from her. He resolves to call her āMaster Lewisā as much as possible, to foster respect and a professional rapport.
āHabit,ā he lies, coming over to pull back a chair; the gap still feels a bit like a school boy sitting on the opposite side of the couch from his crush. Shit, he thinks again.
She continues her explanation of the chronic spells, and he finds himself fully engrossed in the whole concept. Itās not hard to see why she would be so passionate; if they do as she says, it might be possible to enchant a person with yearsā worth of pain relief. Unfortunately, Kaecilius clearly knows as much as she does, if not more.
Master Lewis can tell heās upset. āWhat is it?ā
āOur attackerās knowledge of those spells is very dangerous,ā he says. āHe may be able to tap into a level of power that could stretch them to magnitudes more than a cavern of magic-attuned acolytes.ā
Her expression twists into a vulnerability that makes him feel like an intruder. āI hadnāt mentioned that part,ā she murmurs. āThe attunement. It might be why I had such a strong reaction.ā
It isnāt, and he has no intention of being the one to tell her why.
Thereās a sound at the door, and he stands, expecting Wong. Instead, the Sorcerer Supreme walks in, unruffled as ever.
Master Lewis stands as well. āWere you able to strip the chronic?ā After the answering nod, the two women start discussing the attack. Stephen steps away to finish cleaning the blood off of his face, doing his best to eavesdrop without benefit of magic.
āāsafety of Kamar-Taj, we need to ensure no one is vulnerable to such an attack again. I think you know what that means, and Iām sorry.ā
āI understand. āI used other spells prior,ā Lewis says, but Stephen can see her knuckles whiten from her grip on the chair. She must be using a chronic for pain relief.
āAre you ready, then?ā
Lewis looks pale and frightened, but she bows her head in acquiescence, clasping her hands tightly in front of her.
Stephen watches with trepidation as a geometric net builds itself from the Ancient Oneās twisting hands before folding around Master Lewis. Every time a corner of the shifting energy touches her, it spirals off in a shower of green. The room falls silent.
āTactical mistake,ā Lewis grits out after a few seconds, brushing her hair back away from her face and looking longingly at the chair sheās a fair distance from. The Ancient One, Stephen, and the Cloak all move toward her, but she makes a 'stop!' motion with each hand. āIāve got it, thanks.ā
āYouāve got it, but Iāve got you,ā Wong says from the doorway. He absorbs Lewisās dirty look with his typical equanimity. āI said Iād come back. You donāt have three hands, and you werenāt pointing at me.ā
āFine,ā she sighs, but some of her tension visibly ebbs.
Despite his reluctance to be magically tied to her, Stephen is still affected by the sharp gasp Lewis gives as she takes her first step. He sees the Ancient One nod toward the door, implying that they should offer Lewis some privacy. The Cloak follows, and once in the main library she wordlessly starts casting yet another portal to the New York Sanctum. Stephen is too exhausted to object. He steps through, greeting Master Mordo when he comes to investigate.
āThe students?ā Mordo asks.
āSafe but disenchanted,ā the Ancient One says, with a rare spark of humor. She turns to face Stephen and steps backwards into the same void as before, her eyes challenging him to resist.
He goes to cross his arms, but an aching twinge reminds him of the injury heād suffered not long ago. Nevertheless, the action earns a genuine smile from the Ancient One.
That expression drops when the red and gold symbol once again melts into rejection.
āIt seems your long day of trials is not yet over, Stephen.ā

Summary: As he searches millions of universes for a way to defeat Thanos without losing anyone in the process, Stephen can't help but look up his beloved Hope. He knows he shouldn't meddle in the events of worlds not his to influence, but makes an exception this time.
Length/Warnings: 1,703, tw homelessness
Notes: Written on impulse to cheer up @sobeautifullyobsessed who could also use some hope. Based in the Friday In the Park With Stephen universe, set during 14,000,604, with an alternate universe version of her OC Hope Collins (with her permission, and thank you!)
Please consider helping her out at her ko-fi or with a morale boost by reading and responding to something she's written!
I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
~Translated selection from Sonnet XVII, by Pablo Neruda
The Light of Hidden Flowers
Not all universes are happy. Stephen knows this, has been faced with it multiple times during his Time Stone fueled search for answers⦠but seeing a devastated, depopulated New York in a few universes is less painful than what he sees here. He can imagine that deaths were quick, or that loved ones are holed away somewhere safe and hidden where he might never find them, and those thoughts bring a bizarre kind of comfort.
But the combination of finding a normal-looking universe without Hope and then immediately stepping into a universe where sheās downtrodden and in misery⦠itās almost too much to bear.
Worse still, sheās clearly never met him before.
Unacceptable.
Tonyās pet project Peter would call this a side quest, but Stephen calls it justice. He knows himself, and it doesnāt take that much time to discover that this universeās Stephen Strange is no sorcerer-- in fact, heās a lonely workaholic, more dedicated and less egotistical, if the news articles are to be trusted. Well, no matter. If this universe needs him, itāll call, whether or not the manās wrist-deep in the task of saving someoneās life.
āWake up!ā Stephen tells his counterpart after spending an hour poking around in the quiet, sterile apartment. Itās too big, too empty, and oddly enough, too full of books of poetry and obviously thumbed-through romance novels. Thereās just longing, and nowhere near enough satisfaction.
The solution is staring him in the face: this heartsore, Solemn version of himself needs color in his life, he needs joy, love, a reason for living.Ā
He needs Hope.
Solemn startles awake, hand scrabbling for his wired alarm clock as if he could fight Stephen off with a symbol of time itself.
āIāve finally truly lost it, havenāt I?ā Solemn says bleakly, when his sleep-crusted eyes focus on his assailant.
āWouldnāt you like to be found, instead?ā
The bark of laughter he receives in response sounds so pained that Stephen almost wonders what it would be like to swap this man, send him on an adventure of a lifetime. Then again, if he could take someone with him, heād have taken Not-His-Hope far away from this twisted-axis world and put her in the previous one, the universe that had already lost her.
āTrust me, buddy, no oneās looking.ā
āYouāre wrong,ā Stephen says warmly, throwing an outfit at Solemn. āIāll prove it to you, but if you hurt her, Iāll come back and set your whole world on fire.ā
āHer?ā Solemn scoffs-- but his hands speed up in their task of dressing. āWhat are you, the Ghost of Divorces Past?ā
Stephen re-assesses how fair heās been to this version of himself. If heād married Christine and then lost her, instead of driving her away out of pain and ingratitude, he could very easily see himself becoming a sad recluse, wedded to his work.
āSure I am. You have a spare room, yes?ā he asks his other self, stalking out into the hallway to flip on the light and open various doors. Yes. Perfect. The overpriced apartment is just as he remembered, with two separate āmasterā bedrooms of equal size-- and a shared luxury bathroom between. Just enough privacy and lack thereof.
āYou do know itās three in the morning,?ā Solemn asks from behind him. āYouāre not making me go out, are you? Itās freezing.ā
Stephen whirls around. āNot fit for stray dogs, this weather, yes?ā When Solemn just stands there looking confused, he pushes further. āWho or what do you think I am?ā
āI think youāre a deranged version of me. Youāre clearly here, I can touch you--ā Solemn reaches out with one confident finger and pokes. ā--but as to why, I couldnāt say. Cosmic realignment?ā
āSomething like that. Iām in the middle of saving the universe. Mine, mind you. Yours is⦠probably fine,ā Stephen muses, gesturing for Solemn to follow him to the coat closet. He reaches in and pulls out a serviceable piece of boring warmth and tosses it over. āExcept for one thing. The woman I love-- the woman youāll probably love, if you know whatās good for you-- is in a bad way, here. Abandoned. Alone. It wonāt stand. Youāre in the same emotional space, by the looks of it, but where she has nothing, you have too much, if you catch my drift.ā
Impatiently, Stephen finishes undoing the locks and yanks open the door, but as heād worried, his dour other self hasnāt followed.Ā
When he turns around to see why, Solemn is standing in the doorway in his socks.
āShoes, you have shoes, do you not?ā
āYouāre an intergalactic matchmaker??ā
Stephen walks over and points to the closet. āSHOES.ā
āI--ā
āAre you lonely?ā
Solemn blinks at him, sleepiness and indignance warring on his face. āYes.ā
āAre you bored?ā
A hesitant nod.
āDo you need color in your life? Flowers? Softness? Beauty? Grace?ā
āI need sleep.ā
Stephen sighs, then nods. āOkay, weāll do it the easy way, then.ā He spins up a portal to the parking lot Hopeās car is parked in, grabs Solemn by the elbow, and drags him through, socks and all.
He only realizes the flaw in his audacious plan when he taps on the slightly-fogged window. Consent. He has no idea whether sheāll be terrified to see two versions of a stranger demand that she uproot everything she owns. What if these two are too different to recognize each otherās souls?
Itās important that he not screw this up, so Stephen turns away to take a deep breath and settle himself. He runs through a bastardized version of one of Wongās mantras and focuses on his breathing for a while, stepping further away so heās not standing in a half-frozen puddle.
When heās ready a few minutes later, Stephen is surprised to see that life has continued on without his interference, in the most unexpected and heartwarming of ways.
Solemn is crouched next to the open door of Hopeās sedan, and heās got a small flashlight in his hand. Hope is cocooned in a blanket, stockinged feet dangling out of the car, staring at him in wonder. His heart contracts in his chest. She looks so like his Hope, and yet not quite.Ā
āTip your head back?ā Solemn commands in a concerned voice. He straightens, a few seconds later, and looks over at Stephen. āSheās not well.ā
āWhat do you want to do about it?ā
āIām sorry, are-- are you twins?ā Hope asks in a weary voice, one hand steadying herself as she stands on the hem of her blanket. Stephen canāt skip ahead, canāt use magic to mend either of them. Heās got to experience each second, each minute of trying to persuade these people theyāre good for each other.
Itās excruciating.
āThat would be both more and less Strange than the reality,ā Stephen finally answers with a forced chuckle. āHow long can you leave your car here?ā
Her expression grows distant, but somehow more noble, at the same time. āTwo days, why?ā
Stephen looks at Solemn, who is looking at him like heās just solved a riddle. āYou love her!ā The steam from his exclamation puffs out into the cold night air and disappears, just like Stephenās hopes that his crazy plan will work. Thereās no way sheāll trust them now.
āHe does look at me like he knows me, somehow,ā Hope observes, shuffling over to stand closer to Solemn. āYouāre warm,ā she whispers, next. āI thought this was a dream, but--ā
āSo did I! I should be asleep, but instead Iām here living out a real-life Dickens nov-- Hang on,ā Solemn says, breaking off and snapping his fingers before pointing at Stephen. āYou want me to take her home with me, donāt you! What is this, our do-over?ā
āHome,ā Hope muses softly, before Stephen can answer.Ā
Itās too much for him, and he looks up at the sky, furious at himself for his inability to hide the agony heās feeling to see this normal-looking worldās miserable flaws. Escape is right there for the taking, and he almost wishes he had the cowardice to skip to the next universe and pretend this one never happened.
Ten million universes, and no solution to be found, yet. Is it comforting that it took ten million universes to find one where Hope is--
A hand on his arm startles Stephen out of his agonizing reverie.
āWhat can I do to help?ā Hope asks.
That question hurts more than anything he endured at Dormammuās hands.
āYou can trust me,ā he blurts out. āBoth of you. Go through the portal Iām about to make, and lay down in a warm bed and sleep until you arenāt tired anymore.ā Stephen turns to look at Solemn. āTalk to each other. Cook together. Read. If after a week youāre not smiling more, if you donāt feel like your day is brighter, help get her back on her feet and move on.āĀ
The cold air is already freezing the tear tracks on his face, and Stephen wipes them away-- but Solemn surprises him by grabbing his hand and looking at the scars there.
āWho are you?ā
āIām you, after more trauma and triumph.ā
āAnd you know her? From where youāre from?ā
āYes.ā Stephen looks over and sees that Hopeās shivering. He pulls his wrist free of Solemn and casts a portal directly to the guest bedroom, watching her face. The bright gold casts a light that makes her frozen, delicate wonder look statuesque, despite her patched blanket. āGo on,ā he encourages.
āYouāre not coming?ā she says, looking longingly at the bed on the other side. Solemn comes over to her and offers his arm, catching his breath when she looks up and nods shyly. The two are so caught up in the newness of each other that they donāt hear his answer.
Oh, thanks so much dear one! I am completely unequal to the task of describing how much I want better for you, but know I so, so wish circumstances were different. I am glad I can at least soothe you in this way when all else is beyond reach!

A user on "X" named John Doe has figured out what appears to be a sure-fire AI indicator detectable on AO3 stories when viewed in HTML. Basically, when someone copies over text from Claude results, it includes CSS indicators unique to Claude. The phrase 'font-claude-response-body' is included in the HTML when copied directly from Claude into the AO3 HTML input box.
This is like if you color the text in the HTML mode on Tumblr, but the code to do that only shows up in HTML mode. This is the same thing, invisible formatting tags carried over from Claude.
The "X" user has written an AO3 site skin that makes these easily visible, and here's a link to the reddit post on r/archiveofourown where I found the link. This includes some comments from me, full disclosure. It's possible to view stories via HTML and search for the string of characters yourself without the site skin.
I don't want any appearance of stealing their work or bypassing their announcement or I'd offer a different link for you! We'll hope they're willing to post an announcement elsewhere, but I haven't found any (and the search process was depressing, lots of AI-focused fanfic sites/groups/encouragement).
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itās from a shield. If itās hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnāt there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
this is because, as clouds are forced upwards by rising land, they cool and dump their rain. so the side of the mountain facing the ocean (or an inland sea, or a great lake) gets all the rain as the clouds are squeezed out, and the opposite side gets nothing.
my favorite thing is the american great lake snowbelts! so, the 'flow' of weather across north america, in very general terms, blows from the northwest on down south and east to the gulf of mexico.
so the wind is blowing from west to east, and in the winter it's a dryer wind than in the summer because it's colder. but after blowing across a great lake for a hundred miles, the wind is wet again. and that wet turns into snow. so for all of these lakes, the big cities are on the west side, not the east sides, because the east sides absolutely suck to live on.
the sole exception is buffalo, NY, which literally has to be there because, unfortunately, that's where all the important canal stuff between lake ontario and lake erie is happening.
also this always strikes me as cool, check out where cleveland is:
it's right at the edge of that snowbelt. and you see way more cities west of it than east, too.
#but again. mordor looks like that becaue sauron made it#and he's an ass
On a Watsonian level, sure.
On a Doylistic level, Mordor looks like that because plate tectonics was a fringe, ludicrous, laughable theory that nobody outside serious geology nerds had ever heard of until scientists proved seafloor spreading in the early 1960s. The first edition of the LotR trilogy was published in 54-55. We literally did not know that plate tectonics was real until almost a decade after the book was published, so obviously, it was not something Tolkien could have been considering as he made his maps.
I don't know enough meteorological history to know when white people figured out about rain shadows and added it to geology classes, or what would have been taught about volcanoes and such. But any education Tolkien got on the subject would have been in childhood/adolescence; his college education focused on the liberal arts, not the sciences, and his professional study was linguistics and the middle ages. So anything Medieval and earlier European authors wrote about he had a pretty good chance of knowing about. But not much exposure to modern science. So his science knowledge was probably limited to "what English schools taught at the turn of the 20th Century."
I mean, it's true he didn't know about plate tectonics, but he did know what mountains look like, and that it's not normally That. And it wasn't his style to break that kind of norm without cause.
LotR has recurring themes of the reckless imposition of one's will on the natural world creating ugliness, an order you thought was inherently an improvement that in fact is inferior to what you have displaced. (Typified by reckless tree-felling; a reflection of the despoiling of the English countryside and the world by Progress.)
Mordor is a rectangle because Sauron is an asshole.
#the rain shadow thing otoh was undoubtedly total ignorance#but those mountains were made as the fortress of a demigod#too steeped in evil to understand beauty#it's *supposed* to look like something that Shouldn't Exist#like quite often this is something that happens in worldbuilding yes#things are arranged Wrong because a person doesn't grasp the underlying logic#but mordor is a bad example for the same reason it's an obvious one#it's So Very Wrong because it was designed to be wrong#to give you a bad feeling with how much it shouldn't look like that#if he just wanted it unapproachable on all sides it could've been in a caldera formation it didn't *need* corners#the corners were a choice#tolkien's job involved lots of looking at maps and things okay#meanwhile people whose lives revolved around the weather generally knew where the rain happened#long before it was formalized into 'rain shadow effect'#people not having The Science doesn't mean they don't have eyes and brains
I wrote an entire paper in college analyzing the geology of the Misty Mountains and to a lesser extent the White Mountains (the Misty Mountains are easier because we get a cross-section via Moria). One thing I discovered that still knocks me for a loop when I think about it is:
Moria is the only place in Middle-Earth where mithril is found, right? That's kind of a big deal. So, why? What makes that location so special? Is it just random?
I found a paper that had just been published *that year*, 2011 or 2012 as I was writing it, that studied the locations of precious-metals mines in the Pyrenees, the similarly long skinny mountain chain that divides Spain and France. This paper discovered that where there was a bend in the mountain chain, from one of the continental plates having an awkward corner in it that got subducted under the other plate, that had dug deeper into the mantle and caused precious-metal-bearing ores to flow up to the surface in ways they didn't do anywhere else in the Pyrenees.
There's a conversation in The Fellowship of the Ring where one of the hobbits -- I don't have my copy handy or I'd get the direct quote -- asks why they can see the Misty Mountains ahead of them at one point if they're still heading south from Rivendell, and it's explained that south of Caradhras (which you may recall is the surface mountain under which Moria runs) the mountain chain bends and runs southwest instead of due south for a while.
Tolkien had absolutely no way to know *why* this particular feature of a mountain range was associated with intrusions of rare and unique metal ores, but he had gone backpacking in mountains enough to know How Things Should Look.
(And as prev excellently points out, when Jirt made screwed-up geology it was very much on purpose. Mordor shouldn't be square! Mount Doom shouldn't be doing any of the things it does! A composite volcano shouldn't even have especially hot lava! Even the Gulf of Udun, the circular feature at the upper left corner of the square, shouldn't be like that -- perfectly round features should be impact craters or calderas, not The Mountains Just Do This In A Suspiciously Convenient Way. These are all the way they are because Sauron forced them to be, in defiance of the laws of nature. Remember, he's akin to Balrogs and was a Maia of Aulƫ -- he's a volcano spirit in many ways.)
anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful
I do think it's kind of funny when plot summaries are like "character A encounters the last person they expected...their ex." Idk about you guys I'd be less surprised if my new coworker/roommate/random dance partner was my ex than I would if it was, like, Megawati Sukarnoputri the first woman president of Indonesia.
Any of my exes could plausibly attend the same conference as me. But I'd be really surprised to encounter former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
This poll is ambiguous if you (a) Don't have an ex or (b) Are Egyptian diplomat Hassan Gamal Ahmad Hassan, whose marriage to Megawati Sukarnoputri was anulled in 1972.

Pigeon uses Remembrance day poppies to build a nest on top of Anti-bird spikes in 2019. The absolute amount of symbolism going on here is off the charts.
A pigeon. Both in that it's a dove which means peace, but more importantly that pigeons were essential as messengers during WWI. Most famously Cher Ami.
The spikes resembling violence and hostility.
Using Poppy pins made specifically for Remembrance day and all the symbolism of Poppies and WWI itself.
The fact that it stole the poppies from a tomb of an unknown soldier.
The fact it took them to make a nest to lay eggs and raise its babies in.
The fact that it's on the ledge of a church.
The fact that the window it chose to make the nest against is of a wounded soldier.
You couldn't have STAGED a better photo if you tried.
specifically the way itās nesting on anti-pigeon architecture and pigeons are no longer remembered or valued for their service to society and instead seen as vermin just as a disproportionate number of homeless people are veterans who are no longer remembered or valued as people but instead seen as vermin and must build their lives around anti-homeless architecture and policies.
ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves
back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore
if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??
don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM
so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!
this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together
and then in the end you put it together like this!!
and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy
EVERYONE START GETTING MORE USE OUT OF YOUR SPACE NOW!!!!
