Summary:

Ilya knows what it feels like to drown—for his body to sink deeper and deeper into darkness, to feel pressure in his chest from the water filling his lungs—and right now his whole body shivers in the sharp, familiar chill of heavy liquid enveloping him from the waist down. He knows how this will go. He knows how quickly he’ll be thrashing in the tide gasping for air if he isn’t careful, how easy it will be to slip back down if he never tells anybody.

ilya is whining about it as he takes a seat on a big rock, he’s got tiny pricks of blood and little scrapes all over his legs and he is absolutely making it shane’s problem

and shane scoffs a laugh as he kneels down to pry out as many tiny thorns as he can and says “baby” under his breath, and the thing is that he meant it to be making fun of ilya, but it just comes out so fond and enamored that it sounds genuine

and suddenly ilya is looking down at him with saucer eyes and the bulge in his shorts is growing, and suddenly there’s a hand in shane’s hair and shane’s mouth is watering

Consider

The first year Shane and Ilya live together, when the season ends, Shane goes to sleep and then just doesn’t wake up for a full day. Ilya, obviously, freaks the fuck out, tries to wake him and then when that fails, goes to check his pulse.

Unfortunately for Ilya, because Shane is a ridiculously fit athlete, his resting heart rate is shockingly low (hey Sid Crosby and your 36-38 bpm) and in Ilya’s panic he legit thinks Shane’s dead or at the very least experiencing some kind of heart issue and is in a coma.

Cue Ilya calling an ambulance, convinced his husband is a goner, only for Shane to wake up extremely confused with a room full of strangers and a stretcher next to his bed.
