I find myself increasingly frustrated with the lack of understanding of power dynamics in mcyt. fans are constantly bombarded with reminders not to be parasocial, but rarely is any such energy spared for the streamers who encourage and indeed rely on the fan behaviour in question (their careers would in fact not exist without parasocial relationships, as those are the foundation of the genre). the content creators hold all* the power in this dynamic; it is not an equal playing field, and they should be held to higher standards than their audiences. but it is, of course, much easier to punch down or even laterally at a fan who’s a bit too enthusiastic about a streamer’s personal life or relationships than it is to point out that the streamer in question is the one sharing intimate details about their offline life with their audience, often to garner sympathy or support (financially, even!). ceterum censeo “parasocial” does not mean “overly invested” and imo it should be mandatory to read the original paper on parasocial relationships before using the term in a negative sense
