When you ask for directions on the street someone will show you the way, even though they have nothing to gain from it.

People squeeze their legs against the chair so you don’t have to hop over them on your way to your seat in the theatre, and make funny faces to make babies laugh, and purposefully step on leaves to hear them scrunch, and hold the door open for someone leaving behind them, and ask what floor you’re heading to when you enter the elevator, and send others photos of things that reminded them of them, and recommend each other songs, and ask if anyone else wants a coffee because they’re getting one, and make videos teaching how to sew a button, and wish on shooting stars, and share fun facts, and listen to others rant about things they don’t even understand, and let you cross the street first, and give a bit of their food to others, and laugh at jokes they don’t find funny to make you feel good, and listen to kids talk for hours about nonsense, and let you know your keys fell from your pocket, and they may be strangers, but with every little gesture they’re saying “I love you, I love you, I love you”.

I feel like you can sort of tell how long (or not) someone has existed in fannish spaces by how outraged they get about things like this. Like rings in a tree trunk lol. I've been in so many fandoms. At least one, but often multiple at the same time, since I was a teenager. I've seen just. Everything.

Sex pollen. Mpreg. Incest. Monster fucking. Tentacles. Pairings like Snape/Hermione that would be crazy abusive and illegal if they were real. Wild kinks. The babygirlification of all kinds of villains. So much RPF (the 'I sincerely believe they are secretly a couple' kind and the 'this is fictional but it's fun to imagine they're in love' kind.)

You learn to just scroll past shit you don't like or unfollow people or filter tags. The tldr of fandom is that humans are weird as fuck. And creative, and unhinged, and traumatized, and talented. And amazing. And every single thing that you clutch your pearls about 'well surely someone doesn't want to read/write THAT!' - someone does. Probably lots of people do. And those people are perfectly normal. In their offline lives, they're parents and siblings and they have jobs and friends and they go about their lives and they don't cause any harm. And that's the sticking point. There's this really concerning, frankly highly Evangelical idea that if someone enjoys the wrong kind of fiction, they are obviously a Bad Person. But nothing is that simple, and thought crimes aren't real, and you definitely have some thoughts or ideas that someone else would find fucked up. You don't have to like every kind of fic that exists. I certainly don't. But shaming people for their harmless fantasies about fictional characters is so boring. I saw Goody Proctor enjoying a Toxic Ship! Good for you, I'll alert the pope.

They hear its kid? say "They will kill you" they hear its wife? ask if it's "going to do the thing." It has a past the kids don't know about. It's going to protect everyone or die trying. Its going to buy its family time to get away. You know every human on that boat was relieved when it made it back aboard.

Q. WHAT IS THE TUMBLR SEXYMAN COMPETITION? Heinz: It’s been around for years now. Once a year, Tumblr users -these are a specific type of internet user- can nominate men, and if they get picked to compete, they get pitched together in a set of polls. Winners get pitted against each other until one remains. Last year, I made it to the finale, but I lost to Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls.

Q. DO TUMBLR USERS EVEN KNOW WHAT THE WORD SEXY MEANS? Heinz: HEY! How RUDE! You- Perry: (interrupting) Whether a person is sexy or not is a matter of taste, not a matter of fact.

Q? …AND THE PEOPLE ON TUMBLR HAVE EXCELLENT TASTE? Perry: Yes. Heinz: I’m not so sure. I DIDN’T WIN, LAST YEAR!

Q. SO YOU ARE IN IT TO WIN IT? Heinz: I love a good competition! We’ve only just started, but so far I seem to be doing well. Nothing feels as good as crushing the competition into a fine mist before moving on to the next

Q. AND YOU, PERRY? Perry: I’m only in the first round and already struggling, but I don’t mind. Once I am out, I get to chill out in my hammock and watch him (Heinz) win. If I make it to the second round, that would be great, but I don’t expect anything.

Q. AREN’T YOU USUALLY A PLATYPUS? Perry: (whilst clamping his hand over Heinz’s mouth.) My canon platypus appearance usually gets nominated for the sexy-furry competition. I got second place last year. And yes- I know Kermit is competing in the sexyman competition, but he’s not furry. He is a frog and also a muppet. My human appearance has gained traction on Tumblr and Ao3 over the last few years. There is plenty of fanart and fanfiction where I am human. For the PnF fandom and the Perryshmirtz shippers, this competition is a fun way to let more people know it’s out there.

Murderbot and family are traveling through a massive federated hypercapitalist space featuring deserts, jungle, mountain enclaves, and suburbs, using a combination of ground transport (cars) while bitching about the lack of transit pipes (trains) cross-country. every time they cross state lines I mean corporate zones, their pursuers have to fall back and contract cops I mean security in the next jurisdiction over to keep pursuit up. Just now, in my read, they're having to take a detour because there's some kind of massive sports event full of sports-obsessed humans fucking up local traffic.

Murderbot and its Mensahs are road tripping across the spacefuture United States of America and Barish-Estranza is one of those states (my unfounded guess is Utah)
