Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
i love writing out numbers and then putting them in parentheses like "one (1)" even when i dont need to i think its funny
Text I got from my guy friend whoâs currently dating a man for the first time when I asked him how itâs going

world heritage post: avatar femslash fans on livejournal discussing the possibility of a lesbian or bi lead in the legend of korra in 2010, 2 years before the series first aired. four years later, korra and asami walked into the spirit world together holding hands.

My favorite part of any discussion of kink is when someone is like "EUGH WHAT, HUH, PEOPLE ARE INTO THAT? I DON'T THINK SO, THAT CAN'T BE NORMAL" which is the kind of kneejerk response that contributes nothing to the discussion itself but functions as a signal to others (and, primarily, oneself) that their sexualities are so middle-of-the-road that even the imagined notion of outrĂŠ sexual practices is mind-boggling.Â
It's weird to me because it shows your engagement isn't really intellectual but you also clearly felt the need to follow along the post out of prurient curiosity anyway without being able to help that hindbrain part of you that's like "I'M NOT ONE OF THESE GUYS I'M NOT." Deeply revealing and not in the way I think most people leaving such comments intend. Screams less "Hohoho whoa there, I'm a NORMAL part of sexually healthy society" and more "I fully believe there is an infectious element to taboo sex and I am terrified of being affiliated with you and becoming tainted by you, which I've already risked by reading this far into your post"Â
(It also doesn't escape me that most of the time these posts aren't even about kink on its own, it's how things are "fun and light-hearted" when applied to one subset of the population that does certain sexual practices openly and at the same time become weapons in the hands of transmisogynists. But people don't care enough of about trans women to register the argument being made and will just see mention of again, the salacious fetishes in question, and will immediately go BUT IT'S NOT OKAY. YOU'RE ASKING ME TO ACCEPT THIS AND I SIMPLY WON'T like okay. Not really sure who you're talking to at this point because it isn't OP and I suspect you are conversing out loud with a jury existing in your head)
"While those working at private companies can at least earn a little money, they face possible punishment if they refuse, from being denied family visits to being sent to higher-security prisons, which are so dangerous that the federal government filed a lawsuit four years ago that remains pending [note: article is from 2024], calling the treatment of prisoners unconstitutional.
Though they make at least $7.25 an hour, the state siphons 40% off the top of all wages and also levies fees, including $5 a day for rides to their jobs and $15 a month for laundry.
Turning down work can jeopardize chances of early release in a state that last year granted parole to only 8% of eligible prisoners â an all-time low, and among the worst rates nationwide â though that number more than doubled this year after public outcry."
No state has a longer, more profit-driven history of contracting prisoners out to private companies than Alabama.

the experience of watching a shitty rip of the backrooms on my laptop at 4am having just woken up was i think perhaps an optimal viewing environment.
