i do not want to live in the fucking panopticon fuck the camera that blinks above me at work, the tv watching me at the store, the "smile you're on camera" signs, the ring cameras, the flock cameras, the apps to track your child or partner, the activist friends telling me "just assume everything you do in public is being recorded somewhere", the government building protester databases, the teslas recording every move all around them, the knowledge that everything i type or search or save is being tracked and logged, the ads and search suggestions that mysteriously know what i was just talking about, the way biometrics keep creeping into more places, the way my car spies on me, the way my phone spies on me, the way there is nowhere to go to get away from it!!! no wonder the internet is full of vindictive little stalkers and witchhunts when it's the water and the air of society from the culture to the infrastructure
"sound of the summer is this song" WRONG. its cicadas
for the 40th to 200th million summer in a row
40 to 200 millionth, but yeah
Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasnāt that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
forget everything anyone has ever told you on the matter the truest marker of adulthood is starting to hear the siren call of high quality kitchenware
to be clear you SHOULD buy that cast iron pan and you SHOULD buy that knife set and you SHOULD buy that fancy rice cooker and you SHOULD buy that novelty mug. high quality kitchenware is always worth it youāre literally gonna be using that almost every day
I just need a good pot, a good wok, TWO paring knives, TWO steak knives, and one Santoku style choppitychoppity.
Thatās IT.
I ask for SO LITTLE.
Very helpfully, there is someone keeping track of which high-quality kitchenware has been enshittified and which hasnāt.

Please remember that almost everyone around you is traumatized. I didnāt understand this when I was younger. I wondered why people acted so strangely and irrationally. Maybe all children wonder this. The author Robert Anton Wilson said (paraphrasing), āWe have never seen a completely sane adult human.ā No one makes it out of this life alive. Itās not their fault. Mercy, kindness, forgiving ā these are what makes one human. They are other names for love. People break in the strangest of ways.
āUnder the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being." ā Robert Anton Wilson
big ass tub of kimchi for dinner!
i consider the american flag a hate symbol
A lot of posts on here read like "No I don't think you're a stupid little girl who can't think for herself and needs to sit down, look pretty, and let the smart people talk. I think you're a stupid little boy who can't think for himself and needs to sit down, stop acting like a disgusting man, and let the smart people talk. Why aren't I affirming your gender ?? You wanted this !!"
you canāt support autistic people and support the police. No amount of paint jobs or sensitivity training can stop police from killing with impunity
And fuck the jigsaw puzzle imagery advanced by the eugenicists at Autism Speaks. Weāre not a āpuzzleā to be āsolvedā
Half of all people killed by cops have a disability, because cops arenāt trained to recognize or deal with people with disabilities and very few places have people who are trained for those situations easily accessible during emergencies. So the cops come in and do what theyāre paid to do - murder anyone whoās inconvenient to the state

ācapitalism worksā factoid actually untrue. the 62 people who own half the worldās wealth are outliers and should be eaten.
Absolutely nuts how they made up a number for this satire post and the correction is that reality is *more absurd* than the number they chose
no itās worse. 62 was correct in 2016 when the original post was made.
Millions are being pushed further into poverty while the wealthiest profit from a cost-of-living crisis.
81 now, apparently.
The 8 number is measuring a different thing, 8 is if you take the total wealth of the poorest 50% of people, 80-ish is if you take half the wealth of all people
The poorest half of the world has much, much less than half the worldās wealth. Still bad! Enormous wealth inequality tends to make for a shitty place to live.
this.
i was wrong.
stop reblogging the incorrect version.
i have a way to correct those stats
I really wish I'd had this kind of unrestricted access to unabridged audiobooks when I was in high school. There's so much classic literature that I eventually came to love but that I absolutely hated the first time through because of the context I'd been made to read it in.
Reminder to the kids that Librivox is free, legal, and fun!
And so is Libby!
#or whatever app your library uses!#both have pros and cons#LibriVox doesnāt have wait times and doesnāt require a library card#but Libby has audiobooks that are still under copyright AND it supports libraries#highly recommend both
Yes! Usually, Libby is my go-to and LibriVox is my fallback. Libby has commercial audiobooks available through an app but with wait times and a limited selection; LibriVox has shit you never even imagined with no limits but it's all volunteer-produced and you gotta put it on your phone by candlelight.
LibriVox also has a youtube channel! You can put it on autoplay and listen to leaves of grass followed by shitty 1890s mysteries!
Oh fuck yes
Welcome to the official LibriVox YouTube channel! LibriVox Audiobooks gives you YouTube's best library of complete audio books of works tha
ALSO if you don't wanna deal with YouTube, a lot of librivox recordings are on podcast apps. Genuinely, you search the title of the book as the title of the podcast, you'll find a whole ass librivox recording of it, and if you're the sort to want both you can follow along with a project Gutenberg text. 10/10 for pacing, context clues, etc.
Also hoopla limits your borrows per month but if your library has it the trade off to the limit is you don't have wait times like with Libby.
at the euthanasia party everyone gets a sip of the forbidden lean
Yeah, same
My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.
If all you ever do is step 1, not only did you not apologize, but people will rightfully stop believing you and start getting pissed or hurt.
So crazy how you have the worst day of your life but then the next day the sun keeps shining and the airās just a little cooler w the onset of fall and you realize that thereās nothing you canāt come back from because the only time it will ever be too late is when weāre dead and not ever before
I vividly remember talking to one of my favorite professors about how Iām scared things will fall apart after graduation and how Iām so unused to change and her just going āif things fall apart then they do and u just pick up the pieces and start over again and itās fine. Things falling apart is not this mammoth fear u should be worried aboutā and I remember these words every time I want to pursue or seize something bc literally the worst thing that can happen is it doesnāt work out ā¦.. and then I just pick up the pieces and start all over again

interesting kink assortment on the dash
TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)
In 1997 Ameliaās daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leoneās President and then flown by helicopter to the countryās interior. Ā There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time. Ā Years earlier, Benduās grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.
In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.
(The OP's link leads to a site with a recording of the song sung by both Mary Moran and her mother, Amelia)
Original link seems to be broken, but a quick search led me to this very touching accounting of the full story of how Mary Moran was able to find the village her great great grandmother was taken from:
In 1990, scholars found a Sierra Leonean woman who remembered a nearly identical version of a tune passed down by a Georgia womanās enslaved
