INSUFFERABLE CANADIAN

As a Canadian your media market is overwhelmingly dominated by American-made media, politics, and news, because the US has ten times Canada's population and just way more stuff going on. Because it's so in your face but your language and culture are the same, you need to develop an identity in opposition to it. Thankfully, there is so much partisan infighting in the US that a constant churn of horror stories allows you to very easily do this, since they dominate your media feed anyways. The main themes are:

In Canada we have free healthcare for everyone, in the US if you get a papercut either you go bankrupt or die of the infection because they spent all the money on the army. e.g. Breaking Bad

American police slaughter black men left and right just for fun. e.g. Floyd, George

Every American school has a mass shooting scheduled every week

Us Canadians are polite and nice, Americans are racist and will shoot you at the slightest provocation

Most of these narratives are half-true at best, but they are what people generally believe. Most Canadians think Canada is just a nicer place to live across the board.

Everyone knows someone who's gone to work in the US, but only a minority know why. Generally people assume "there's more opportunity" just because America is bigger. If a Canadian is aware of the GDP/capita gap and the brain drain it causes, they probably are of a wonkish bent with a much more data-informed understanding of this whole thing.
