Game show called "What's Wrong With You" where a bunch of doctors compete to see who can diagnose a mystery illness (chronically ill patient whose lab results keep coming back normal despite obvious symptoms) first and most accurately.
Pros:
Doctors paying off their medical loans with prize money
Chronically ill people getting free testing (MRIs, CAT scans, X-Rays, bloodwork, etc) and possibly a diagnosis
You can ding points for 'anxiety' and 'you just need to lose some weight'
Doctors are incentivized to find an answer, not just find something billable
Cons:
HIPAA
Wrong Diagnoses made because they were rushing
HIPAA can be bypassed via agreement to air/be on the show. There'd need to be lawyers heavily involved with setting up the specifics of how the paperwork works, but its absolutely doable.
I don't knkw how to handle the issue of wrong diagnosis bc folks were rushing tho
More lawyers prepping the young docs to avoid triggering malpractice suits, probably.
letโs talk about how they made it impossible to function without a phone and digitalised everything and then turned around and went โactually! these phone things arenโt safe for kids but itโs magically ok once youโre eighteen. guess youโll have to have your life dictated by your parents now lol cause weโre gonna take the devices away from you. ITโS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD WHY ARE YOU COMPLAININGโ
ok my apologies. take away my ability to buy anything too ig because these fuckass stores donโt accept cash anymore. take away my ability to communicate with people outside my house and school because I canโt text and I canโt email and I cant drive to them either and I canโt even fucking get public transport without a phone either. canโt order at a fucking restaurant without being asked to get a membership and install an app and also very sorry but you can only order through our online menu now! have you ever considered that itโs not just about instagram?
My therapist (this a new one, not to be confused with the one I hit with my car) is a very straight-laced, youth pastor type guy who does not understand what I am talking about 90% of the time so honestly idk how effective he is as a therapist, but randomly he will zero in on one of my Brain Problems with complete clarity before going back to his default Straight And Neurotypical level of understanding of my general fuck-up-ery. Like I was trying to explain to him why I project so much onto certain fictional characters and why writing fanfiction about them is so cathartic for me, and I could tell I was losing him because he was having a hard time grasping the idea of just, fanfiction in general, but then he suddenly said, "it might feel safer for you to explore scary feelings with creative writing about fictional characters because you actually have control over the things you're writing, as opposed to in the real world, where you feel you have very little control over anything." And I was kind of reeling from that a little, because like, yeah, but then he said "and you use characters you like because it makes you happy to see them, like how I watch any movie that has The Rock starring in it, because it makes me happy to see The Rock." And then he just looked at me like
thank you The Beatles
Thatโs Queen but yes thank you!

"whats your 5 year plan?" buddy I nearly go insane thinking about what I should have for dinner
hey as long as discourse on whether joining the military is bad or not (it is) is doing the rounds again, iโd like to remind everyone that people who were in the military but are not any longer are not ontologically incapable of being leftists or good people. many of the militaryโs harshest critics are vets. theyโve seen what the military can do. theyโve personally been chewed up and spat. so have their friends. they know first hand the horrors the military has inflicted on the world.
obviously many vets never stop drinking the kool-aid. but many others do. and we shouldnโt reject them as comrades. chelsea manning was in the army before becoming a whistleblower. edward snowden was in the nsa. etc. yes call out people for joining, keep pointing out itโs wrong to kill people for money. even if youโre poor. even if youโre ignorant. but donโt condemn someone solely for their past if theyโve done the hard work of learning and growing. i think itโs pretty easy to walk and chew gum on this one. but itโs easy for some of us to forget that we have to.

Honestly, at this point, if you're still bitching about AI but not moving to open-source and nonprofit software/tech/services, you deserve it. Shut up or stop using it. Those of us who've put in the effort to switch to non-evil tech are sick of the purposeless whining.
I've been nicely letting everyone suggest open source on this post because it might genuinely be useful to someone but because you've decided to be a condescending little bastard- this might be a hard concept to grasp, but some of us actually have jobs. Some of those jobs also provide us with computers equipped with an OS we have zero say over, to use software we also have zero say over. Kindly get off your high horse and suck my dick.
As someone who has worked in IT for the past 17 years, I'd also like to say that there is often a higher barrier of entry for open-source software / operating systems when it comes to technical knowledge and ability, and those who can't jump that barrier still deserve to not have AI programs installed on their devices without their knowledge or consent. Someone who struggles with Windows is not going to be able to just hop into Linux, especially when they probably have other things going on in their lives and don't have the time to sit down and learn a brand new operating system. Someone who doesn't even recognize that there are different browsers, much less open-source ones that aren't Chromium forks, isn't going to be able to seek out one they can both a.) safely download, b.) install, and c.) use instead of the shortcut they know as The Internet.
And sure, you can dismiss these people as lazy, as stupid, as being elderly and so who cares. But from my 17 years of experience, I can tell you that technical instinct and ability varies widely across the entire adult spectrum. And I can also tell you that people have different strengths, and that just because someone isn't good with computers doesn't mean they aren't smart as hell.
And I can also say, again, that it really doesn't matter.
Companies like Microsoft and Google sneaking AI software into devices and software without the consent of those using the software or devices is wrong. It's invasive and raises major security concerns. People should not have to learn entirely new operating systems to escape this nonsense. It's an unreasonable expectation, and it fails to hold companies like Microsoft and Google accountable for their malicious behavior.
always doing something annoying
can I be honest? I was so pissed off by friends and family criticizing my soap choice that, for half a year, I did an experiment where I washed one hand with Palmolive and one with handsoap, to prove that it didn't make your skin any rougher. and do you know what the result is? it does make your skin rougher. and now I'm even more pissed off.
I love this. This is the beauty of the honest scientific process. You had an idea, you tested it and you still reported the results even though the results disproved your idea.
It's ok to be mad at it, you're an honest scientist.
i hate when apps know that iโm screenshotting something. when i screenshot something, thatโs me acting outside your realm of understanding, app. i am beyond what you consider the observable universe. youโre not supposed to perceive me. we donโt know when god screenshots the earth. we donโt know when heโs like, โokay iโm just gonna take a pic in case i ever want to add dinosaurs back to something later and donโt remember how.โ and if we did, we wouldnโt act all smug about it like, โhey, you wanna share that post? you could just click here to share it.โ no, man. you didnโt catch me. i screenshotted this for my own reasons. whatโs next? i canโt take a photo of my computer screen with my phone out of laziness without being shamed by the printer i donโt own?

A record die-off of sea stars was followed by something that stunned biologists
The creatures almost went extinct along the West Coast a decade ago. Recently, they have been making a comeback.
Six months ago, Mengeโs team published excitingย researchย โ five-legged sea stars were undergoing a significant โbaby boom.โ The tide pools were denser than they had been before the disease, and the juveniles were eating mussels and clearing space for other species. In short, something rare and wonderful was happening on the Oregon Coast: One of the intertidal zoneโs most important predators had returned from the brink...

local science human sleeps in worryingly strange positions
When I was in grade school I used to send emails to biologists and zoologists asking them questions to get answers to include in school projects I was working on, and would cry when they did not respond because I thought I was stupid for thinking that some random kid would ever be deserving of a response from someone who does something as smart and cool and important as *checks notes* studies frog fungus.
Now, at 29, Iโm lowkey having a panic attack because my academic email is filled with middle schoolers wanting me to answer their questions about pygmy raccoons and I keep putting off answering them because Iโm so overwhelmed with all the other raccoon stuff I have to do.
Anyway, greatest apologies to any scientist I ever emailed as a child and also an adult.
I know your research is really important and I appreciate all you are doing but this is so fucking funny

Hey can you guys reblog Cheeseburger so he can take a sunbeam nap on lots of blogs. No other reason I just want you guys to see him.
u gotta get less misanthropic I'm not kidding
especially now with all the bullshit going on in Kansas, in Texas, in Iran, with Israel and Palestine, this ICE shit, this Epstein shit, it is essential to remember that evil and violence is not the natural state of humanity. this is not what humanity is like. if it was, there would be no reason to be disgusted or fight against it. most people are good and decent, and are victims of this, and by reducing it to a "carte blanche humanity is fucked anyway" you are casting aside the good, decent, loving people with rich inner lives who these cowardly fucks think are disposable
