I’ve not seen much of the Isaac hate myself I’ve just seen people defending him, and then some people saying the creators did him dirty and villified him because he’s a disabled character, and either disabled characters are angels or they’re horrible because DiSaBleD pEopLe CaN bE mEaN tOo!!! (I’m not denying that this is often the case, just that I don’t think that’s it in this show)

And I’m going to propose a different take, BUT FIRST I want to make it clear that I am a very healthy person with a very healthy relationship with my family, so if any of this is OFFENSIVE in any way, it stems from a lack on knowledge on my part and not because I wanted to offend in anyway. If I’m offensive I’ll be happy if you point it out to me kindly, and I will readjust with the new knowledge.

So, Isaac and his brother are immediately dicks, stealing gaz from the others and getting away with it and Maeve is of course mad at them.

Then later we learn that Isaac is a decent guy, he’s just had a bad life and he’s doing his best, and he wants to bond with Maeve over their similar situations, and here’s the thing; they do have those horrible experiences with being let down by people who should have cared for them and they have suffered for it, and while people from functioning families (like Otis, although he has problems too, with his da) will say ‘yes, I understand, it must’ve been horrible for you’ they don’t really understand what it was like, you know?

So Isaac and Maeve have this understanding, and Isaac knows that Otis does not. When Isaac sees Otis at the party (when he was a fucking dick, honestly Otis might have his own problems but I don’t really like him) it’s clear to him that this boy doesn’t appreciate Maeve and will never understand her and her issues like he does.

When Isaac deletes the message I think it’s because of this: he feels he has a superior understanding of Maeve, and Otis will never be good for her, simply because he isn’t broken, he isn’t like them. We see that Maeve has been pretending to live a normal life and fit in with normal people, yes she has distanced herself from them, but I don’t think that’s only because she’s different due to her family situation (thought probably a part of it).

I think that Isaac and bro have distanced themselves from people with healthy families because they think themselves different, will never be able to ‘be normal’ will never be able to have a common understanding with ‘normal’ people.

So - I think Isaac deleting the message has more to do with him being abandoned and having grown up like he did, and /not/ because he’s an asshole in a wheelchair. I get the sense that his presence later might draw Maeve to isolate herself more from the ‘normal’ and ‘lucky’ kids because she doesn’t belong with them, and she isn’t like them, from Isaac’s point of view. And honestly that makes sense from his point of view, knowing how his life has been and how it’s shaped him in ways.

When he says Otis wouldn’t understand, in context of the episode it read for me more like him trying to comfort Maeve after she’s been humiliated by this douchbag that she likes at a party, and not really an attempt to isolate her from all the other people around her, at least in my perspective.

I think we don’t have enough information yet to say for sure his motivations. These are just my opinions but I still like this take and I won’t have a problem if that is the direction they decide to go for s3
