i think constantly about this. you know what most academics think if we hear someone has multiple phds? we think, mostly, like, oof, yikes, hope that guy’s okay. their advisors clearly aren’t looking out for them, or might be actively abusing them. they’re neither landing a TT job nor successfully leaving to go work in industry, and no one in their life has the good sense to help them find like a steady desk job, or they’re too in their mental illness to get or keep one. god knows we’ve been there. we think, shit, isn’t anyone looking out for you enough to write you onto a grant as a postdoc at the fucking least? we cringe when we think of how many grad students we’ve known who just, like, fall off the map, rather than going back for more, over and over again. two phds is like, a career change, but beyond that, like. hello? how are you even getting admitted to the third or fourth phd, are you like lightly defrauding admissions? and then you finally got a decent, steady-ish government job after all that, which we’re all REALLY relieved about bc frankly your burnout was visible from space and you were really scaring the undergrads, and then we all suck air in through our teeth again when we hear what government job it is. like oh yeah you got a nice steady job of LITERALLY frying your brain, then, huh buddy? the metaphor started to get stale for ya there?
