went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks dont mine the deep’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning

Me: "You know what? That could be a factor...While it is always better to be safe rather than sorry (so YES people should always tag eyestrain even if they're unsure if it "counts" or not) maybe you've got a point?"

Because my brain worms demand mathematics and a poll on longest song in one's collection got me thinking, I've gotten into doing the math to find the mean and median TOOL track based on physical release studio albums and the Opiate EP from '92
You'd think someone would have done the math on this by now given TOOL's following, but the one blog I found on the subject stated, "While there is no specific average length, their songs tend to be longer compared to conventional radio hits. This characteristic grants the band the freedom to explore and express their creativity with a sense of depth and complexity." when prompted on the average length of a TOOL song. While philosophically accurate, the statement falters in that we have the numbers, the data exists, and with that data, one can find the average length of a TOOL song.
Of course, I couldn't stop there and wanted to see how the median number compares since many of their albums feature short instrumental interludes and hidden tracks.
As of now (1. June 2026), the mean total length of a TOOL album is 71:14, and with 61-63 tracks across 6 albums, the average song length works out to 7:02-8:04 depending on how one breaks down the bonus tracks on Opiate and Aenima. Undertow's final track also has bonus content, but plays continuously, so where it was originally considered for review and Opiate's not, that consideration was rescinded.
For the sake of mathematical integrity, I've chosen on the second day of work to stick with the tracks as recorded for physical release and work with the 61 track total.
The Median track out of the 61 definitively listed is #31, "Parabola" on Lateralus (2001), at 6:03.
The Mode is not relevant in this data set, but if it were, the most common song lengths are 3:46 ["Sweat" (Opiate, 1992), "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" (10,000 Days, 2006)] and 8:28 ["Opiate" (Opiate, 1992), "Eulogy" (Aenima, 1996)].
Ergo, the median TOOL song length is 6:03, and the mean TOOL song length is 7:02. These lengths place "Parabola" as the absolute median and "Vicarious" as the approximate mean.
The album breakdown is as follows below the cut with work shown (all work handwritten and checked with calculator and reorganizing tracks via Windows Media Player on ancient laptop):
