On this day, 16th August 1943, Jews in the Białystok Ghetto in Nazi-occupied Poland launched an armed uprising against Nazi liquidation — the second-largest ghetto revolt after Warsaw.

Led by Mordechai Tenenbaum and Daniel Moszkowicz, fighters armed with pistols, homemade grenades and Molotov cocktails battled German troops for several days.

They hoped to break through to the Knyszyn Forest to join partisans, but were outnumbered and outgunned.

Most were killed in combat or took their own lives to avoid capture.

The ghetto, once home to 50,000 Jews, was emptied; almost all its inhabitants were murdered in Treblinka or Majdanek.

The uprising stands as a testament to courage and resistance against unimaginable oppression.

Photographer thought he was taking pictures of lions from a safe distance, until the pride’s king appeared behind him.

Peter was photographing a pride of lions at a wildlife reserve while Matthew stayed near the vehicle, watching the area around them. The lions were far enough away that Peter felt safe.

Then Matthew saw movement behind him. A large male lion was walking toward Peter from the brush.

Matthew quietly warned him not to move. Peter froze, still holding his camera, as the lion stepped closer and sniffed around him. For a few terrifying seconds, the animal stood beside him, then placed one heavy paw near his back like it was checking who had entered its space.

Peter didn’t breathe. Then the lion moved on. When it returned to the pride, the others scattered and lowered their heads as it passed through, like everyone there already knew who was in charge.
