ICE now tackling press.
Source.
Interview where he talks about what happened.
A photographer for Getty isn't even a journalist so much as an archivist. ICE violently disrupted the apolitical documentation of what they were doing, violating any and all rights that might flimsily stand in their way. It would have been just as wrong had they done this to an MSNBC reporter hellbent on a spin, but now Abernathy's neutral action as a photographer has been rendered necessarily political by ICE's violence.
They know what they're doing is objectively evil. They have no intention of stopping.
previous tags from @nihilisticspacequeer, which provide a bit of context for why Abernathy threw his (extremely expensive) camera
why go to the grocery store or to a restaurant when you can just get food delivered why go to the mall when you can get same day shipping on amazon why go to the library when you have kindle why make art when thereās ai why go to the cinema when you can stay at home and watch netflix. we are in a loneliness epidemic btw
the loneliness epidemic was invented by BIG SHIT to sell you more SHIT

I want to summarize what Iāve been reading about in the library. hhhhhh how do I do that
Iāve been reading (and have read) a lot about trauma and anxiety, and also literature, literary theory, literary criticism, things like that. I feel like Iām comprehending something vast about human nature and my own nature that makes me want to vibrate at the speed of light.
Itās something to do with picking up a book in the literature section that was a survey of woundedness, or scars and wounds as motifs in classic literature, and picking up a book in the psych section about feeling safe and healing from fear, and realizing the booksā prefaces talked about essentially the same things in essentially the same language
sufficiently advanced psychology, that is, compassionate and human centered, is indistinguishable from literary studies
This book is about coping with real life horror, but it also is just one fantastic insight after another on how to write about horror, probably more so than anything Iāve read actually for the purpose of showing how to write horror.
I literally cannot stop returning to these lines in my head, especially āAnd only two processes are strong enough to reduce and contain fear. Those two processes are: knowing and loving.ā
Does this writer know what a searing artistic insight they have happened upon? That a horror story, a story that delves in fear, must also be a love story, not in the sense of a story about falling in love or that centers the feeling of love, but in the sense that wherever love and understanding is absent, there true horror is, and whatever loves or is loved or must be loved, whatever understands or is understood or demands to be understood, that is what lets us fight back.
Like there are all these thinkpieces on what the core of the horror story is, what is the fundamental human fear that drives it, and I think this is it. Itās right here

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the heightened risk of respiratory virus transmission in enclosed, densely populated environments. Aircraf
(PAYWALLED)
I tell this often, but the sickest I have ever been as an adult was on a transatlantic flight with the woman behind be coughing her lungs out the whole time. Damn right I caught that shit and lost my voice for two whole weeks. It's not even about Covid, you'll catch anything your seatmate's got. And remember we now have nasty flu strains, measles, and a few other unpleasant things going around now.
Planes, busses, and trains are all transmission high risk locations. Mask the fuck up.

that Brian Eno quote about how whatever you find most repulsive about a medium (film grain, record scratches/fuzz, CDs skipping) will be the first thing you try and emulate once that medium is obsolete because it's "the sign of a moment too powerful for the medium assigned to contain it".... man.......
āWhatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. Itās the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.ā -Brian Eno
People love to say things like āHiding Anne Frank was illegal, turning her in would have been legalā without like fully grasping the modern implications properly. You have tons of folks like āif WW2 happened today id have __ā that do not realize what is happening around them.
We have this idolized AND sanitized version of what happened then, and so we do not recognize it when it happens now.
Resistance fighters assassinated nazis and blew up weapons and infrastructure and destroyed records and forged paperwork and raised secret funds and smuggled people in vehicles and yes, hid them in their homes.
āWell itās sad he got sent to an ICE camp but he faked his permit :/ā
Whoever helped him fake his paperwork did what fighters in ww2 did. People who cut through chain link fences do what fighters in ww2 did, people who blow whistles chasing after ice cars do what fighters in ww2 did, people who destroy arms factories and cop city cranes do what fighters in ww2 did, people unmask agents do what fighters in ww2 did.
People are doing it now! Theyāve been doing it now! You keep saying āoh if this happened here__ā it HAS! It IS!
What are you doing about it?
As someone on the front lines of the court system, Iām confirming this. Itās easy to assume that people are being hyperbolic. Theyāre not. People in the courthouse for speeding tickets and child support are being strongarmed into locked rooms and arrested, loaded into vans under tents behind the courthouse, and they built a fence with netting over it to prevent reporters and court watchers from photographing faces.
One local jail contracted with ICE voluntarily. We were getting close to forcing them to actually follow the rules of ICE detainers and release people if ICE hadnāt come for them. Thatās over now. If anyone gets bond on a pending criminal charge, they are arrested and deported without the chance to prove innocence or guilt.
Two of my clients were victims of severe domestic violence. Nearly all have dependent children. Some of the children are US citizens. There are no questions. No support. Give your kids to CPS ā this is the only option.
You know undocumented people can get a driverās license? They can file taxes and get a tax ID? Those, the ones who tried to obey the law, are being taken out one by one, because their names are in a database that they voluntarily joined. Because they want to be here. They want to be Americans.
The judge in a case of mine gave someone a two-day jail sentence. Gone. Case deferrals for dismissal are available for all Americans; if an undocumented person tries to take the same deal, theyāre gone. A child client of mine had his father disappear to ICE. A woman had her husband disappear.
Itās now. Detainees kept in horrible conditions, unfed, unwashed, no lawyers, no doctors. Itās now. Shipped to countries where theyāve never been and left without papers. Itās now. Itās now. Itās happening now. Itās happening now.

Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click ādonāt show this artistā on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click āskip this updateā on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and itās right back there every time. I click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click ādelete my accountā and the next time I open the website they suggest I āreactivateā.
If you're looking for a good, centralized collection of fundraisers for people and organizations doing on-the-ground work in Minnesota right now, someone on Bluesky put together a great resource hub for things like food support, rent relief, mutual aid, and immigrants' rights centers that I'd really love to see spread around.
And if you're local to the Twin Cities, there's a "Take Action" section with links to ways to get active, as well as some resource guides for legal observers, etc.
Those of us here in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the metro area appreciate every bit of support we can get right now, especially with the federal government cutting off things like SNAP benefits for Minnesotans and threatening further retaliation. Keep us in your thoughts, and maybe pick a cause to support, if you can.
Reblogging to add that the person who put this together has turned it into a full-fledged website, if that's any easier to spread around!
