Summary: A visit to Rattay results in an unexpected job for the Skalitz smith Martin. Inspired by this post from @sourdough-of-skalitz!
Market days are a family affair.
They load up before dawn, working by the pale silver light to fill the wagon with their wares. When the goods are loaded, the people follow suit, cramming into the riding seat beside Martin: Henry with his lashes sandy from sleep and Jana, who isn't so different from their son in that respect. Martin wakes first, a habit he picked up in his soldiering days, stubborn to die. The ride shakes the dreams off them, Henry leaning off the cart to stare around them, as though Martin has driven them to some far-off, foreign land and not simply the next town over.
Henry's eyes, which at a glance might be mistaken for Martin's, are wide as plates when the castle towers breach the horizon. "Is this a city?" he asks, any hope and wonder quickly shot down by Martin's flat, "No."
Rattay is a more imposing sight than Skalitz; her seat upon the hill and her sturdy stone walls play at a town that one day hopes to be more than what fate has allotted. But unless there is silver hidden in that hill, Martin expects those hopes to go unrealised. He spurs the horses, their strength battling the protesting wheels up the steepest bank leading to the gates. Although a laden camel may not pass through the eye of heaven, Rattay's gates are more accommodating, and the strength of Hannes's mares bear them through while the day is still young.
