Book!Grace and Movie!Grace are funny in very different ways.
Book!Grace is so snarky. He's endearing, but also prickly. Like, THIS guy would definitely tell someone off in a fit of pique. Sometimes I feel like I can feel him pouting. He reads like controlled chaos to me. And I feel like there's a low grade thrum of exasperation in him all the time. My dude wants to smack his students fuckass parents with a nickel filled sock. Also he often went bar for bar with Stratt (which I think is part of why he became her second). He stood ten toes down when he needed.
Movie!Grace is much more Hot Smart Loser Nerd. He's funny moreso in how he reacts to different situations. He makes me feel protective. He's a softer more anxious version (soft, not weak) who doesn't feel like he's got as many city miles on him as Book!Grace does. THIS guy would absolutely befriend a spider crab in two seconds flat. He feels much more gentle and accessible.
I love both versions and I honestly tend to combine both verses as I please. Anyway this was so scatterbrained, lol.
You know, one of my favourite things about Ryland Grace is how sociable he is. How easy it is for people to fall into his orbit. They show it time and time again. How much his students obviously love him, how he manages to hype up the dour suits whilst he's testing the astrophage, Carl playing with him in the Home Depot, the other government people eating his Skittles, Eva Stratt dragging him around everywhere and allowing herself to be just that little bit more vulnerable around him, Rocky and the Eridians embracing him as not just as a savior but family.
I know it's not explicit that Grace is aroace but so often, aroace people are portrayed as distant and independent and happily isolated. Sometimes even to the point of misanthropy. It's so nice to see a character like this who loves connecting with people. He's a rambler, he's excitable. So what if he doesn't have a family or a dog. He doesn't need them because he has everyone he meets and that's enough.
"stop saying rocky is grace's dog, Grace is obviously rocky's dog" have you considered they're friends. have you considered that maybe they view each other as brilliant and brave and saviours of each others worlds and as their best friend? have you considered that they are friends who respect one another?

the first part of project hail mary is so funny to me because what do you mean grace asks ‘what’s project hail mary’ and it immediately cuts to stratt presenting a ‘what is project hail mary’ powerpoint. these cuts are diabolically stupid and i love them
This is some of the most straightforward characterization Grace gets in the book and it's hilarious
There is something that screams SO MARRIED when:
Grace is dragged up and down, east and west by Stratt and he's like "yeah, another tuesday"
How whenever she's about to do something questionable like kidnapping another scientist (Dr. Lokken) he's like "you'll get use to it."
How the movie pulls this but switched it, when Grace is firstly meets the crew and Yao says "he talks like a kid", and Stratt is like "you'll get use to it." Then followed by her telling him "you are doing great."
How once again when Stratt is about to do something questionable, like nuking the Antarctic and she says something like "I dont care about morality" and he's like "yeah, she doesn't".
And just the way they gravitated towards each other, she only smiles when he's with her, he goes to look for her whenever he feels uncomfortable in a room and after seeing people flirting. How they work together in separate stuff.
Ryland Grace literally said "I stand with my canceled wife".

POV you are Eva Stratt and your brain is absolutely fried after a long day of disaster management, meetings with world leaders, and giving too much of a fuck about a planet whose people would sooner see you drawn and quartered in the town square after being pelted with rocks and/or whipped (you're not entirely unsure about that explicitly NOT being an option. You've pissed too many people off for it to be entirely off the table). You walk past the labs just to check in on everyone; a brief look through the window and nothing more. For morale or something. And to maybe see a friend if he's there..
The fluorescents make your head pound more. Someone spots you. Damn. Are they- yep. They're coming over. You acknowledge stiffly. They open their mouth and begin to say something. You're not sure what. There's so much scientific jargon in it that it's a struggle not to just completely zone out, nod, and agree to whatever it is. They finish, they smile, you nod, then they leave. Grace appears to your right and you've no clue how he got there - he's like a cat in that regard. "They were just letting you know that we've managed to speed up breeding time for the astrophage," he says, straight to the point. There's a "woomp there it is" that cycles through the back of your thoughts that solidifies the information. You nod. That makes more sense than whatever the hell you'd heard first. Thank God there's someone here who can make this information more digestible when you're running on fumes.
