ok but this unironically works. talk about how the working class is exploited and you can basically sell full-on marxism to your average republican if you do it right. all you have to do is avoid the words "Marx," "capitalism," "socialism," "communism," "means of production," etc - just use synonyms. say "big business" or "corporate shareholder interests" instead of "capitalists." say "a government that prioritizes the needs of the working people" instead of "socialism." it WORKS. I've DONE it. the hardest sell are usually things like social and racial equity, welfare, things like that, because people have been primed with the racist/classist idea that those things are somehow unfair - but you can get your foot in the door to getting them to buy into those too if you start with class issues. read up on your theory, make sure you REALLY understand your own ideology, because that will enable you to reword it and successfully sell it.
In my experience, you can often help sell 'welfare' stuff by appealing to self-interest with a touch of Aren't We Great.
Disability benefits: "I mean, sure, there are probably some sad sacks who are gaming the system, there always are, but hell, with the amount of taxes we pay, the government can afford a few freeloaders, right? I'd rather pay for a couple people who don't really need it than not have the system at all for if I need it, or my kids do, or whatever. I mean shit happens. Wait so. Elliot Pageās role in The Odyssey is to be unwillingly sacrificed within the first five minutes of his appearance and THATāS the ācomplex and interestingā role that people have claimed was personally gifted to him by Nolan for transitioning into a man?? Five minutes of screen time where heās immediately killed?? Are we actually fucking serious right now. Iāve had to deal with post after post on every social media platform telling me that The Odyssey is proof that Elliot Page transitioned into privilege and the role in question is the most insulting, transphobic, nothingburger Iāve ever seen in my life. Am I missing something here because I feel like Iām losing my mind.
These people think a trans man existing in public is proof of privilege. These people think a trans man being allowed to live and breathe is proof of privilege. These people donāt want trans men to exist btw call it out for what it is at this point.
Sinon is a very important character in The Aeneid. He pretty much singlehandedly brought the downfall of Troy.
This is about Christopher Nolanās movie adaptation of the Odyssey, not The Aeneid book.
I get that Sinon is an important and complex character, but when weāre discussing the context of Elliot Page playing him and how his character was handled in Nolanās adaptation:
1) His character doesnāt exist in Homerās Odyssey and was taken from Virgilās Aeneid and given to him instead of giving him an actual character in the Odyssey. If someone were to visit the original source material, his role will not even be there.
2) He is essentially the dead wife of the plot, and is also one of the youngest characters. He haunts the narrative, which is a pretty common role given to women so as to not actually write them into the plot, but please do keep telling me that there is absolutely no transphobic or misogynistic biases towards why Elliot Page was specifically selected to play Sinon.
3) He still only gets a combined amount of about five minutes of screentime, and considering this is the most notable role heās recieved since coming out 5+ years agoā¦ I donāt think this is proof that transitioning has benefited his career. Every time Elliot Page is even mentioned by name, the internet goes on a horrifically transphobic crusade for months until heās forced back into obscurity. His acting career has objectively tanked since coming out.
4) Elliot Page has already worked with Chrisopher Nolan and was given a (noteably) bigger role in Inception pre-transition. Christopher Nolan did not āwaitā for Elliot Page to transition (whatever the fuck that means), the two already knew each other from previous projects.
Edit: Personally, the only real win to me is that a trans man got to play a cis man without his transness being considered an issue, but the way in which Nolan went about it felt more like throwing Elliot Page a bone while benefiting from the outrage caused by Elliot Page simply existing, and instead of celebrating the small win that trans men received, every single side of the internet decided to rip into him and either call him a mentally ill woman or a privileged man benefiting from misogyny.

did you know the cops once found a fully functioning movie theater with a well-stocked bar inside the catacombs and they when they tried to go back later to formally investigate it was completely emptied out save for a note that read "don't search for us"

my little bro is part of the catacombs community and yeah, it's basically a fully autonomous society! enough that when my bro goes in on a friday night, they don't come out until monday for work- sometimes longer if they took days off.
some of the rooms have fully stocked pantries with cooking equipment, some have movies like the one described above, some have books you're allowed to just take but people always put back- every day people bring things from the outside. artists often set up galleries there. there are rooms with mattresses and hammocks set up for people to sleep. one of the room is just a place where people leave shoes for the fun of it.
this is Known, it's not a secret by any means. the catacombs are as big as paris itself, and people live there just as people live above. it's wonderful when you think about it.

genuinely I'm so sick of people wanting all fiction to be ethical. can we all just get a little gross with it. the point of fiction is that it's not real. we can be unethical in fiction; same goes with being perverted with fiction, being unrealistic with fiction, and being grotesque with fiction. not all fiction has to be ethical, not every character has to be ethical, and that's okay. can we stop with the puritanism. be gross. be unrealistic. be whatever. if I don't like it it's not my business as long as we're all clear that its fictional.
