Vladimir Myagkov - Weavers (1975)
I think it would be funny to write a murder mystery where not only did every single character involved have an obvious motive to kill this mf, they were actually all attempting to murder him first, but the murder attempts all cancelled each other out all except for one. Two people tried to poison him but the poisons just happen to work as antidotes for each other, and instead of killing him only gave him the shits, and due to having the shits he couldn't go hunting that day like he had planned, foiling the plans of the one who had conditioned his favourite hunting horse to panic and bolt at the cue of a whistle, and the other murder attempt of tampering with his gun so that it would have exploded his whole face off.
The whole mystery isn't about who could have done it or how, but who was the one who got lucky and actually succeeded.
Sherlock Holmes and The Case of Perhaps We'd Best Leave This One Alone, Watson. There Appears To Be An Excess Of Armed Maniacs In The Vicinity.
When I was in high school a friend of mine would host murder mystery dinners once or twice a year. They were the kind you could buy as a kit -- I don't even know if they exist anymore -- and everyone was assigned (or chose) a character, then received a booklet of clues to share. The idea was to spend an evening in a one-shot LARP designed like an Agatha Christie novel.
I was a year above most of them at school so they threw a "goodbye" murder mystery for me just before graduation, and about 2/3 of the way through the game we all realized that everyone had at least attempted to kill the victim. The game then shifted from "whodunnit" to "who succeeded in dunninit" which we all felt was not only super fun but above the usual level of narrative complexity for those games.
After we solved it, we discovered that the game wasn't from a kit -- the host had written it herself and meticulously printed out the booklets in replica style of the kits. It was the best going-away party I think I could possibly have had.
theΒ βsexy lamp testβ but for disabled folks: if you can replace your disabled character with a beloved pet dog that needs an expensive surgery to survive then you have to throw out your manuscriptΒ

i say this soooo lightheartedly and not really telling anyone what to do but. i understand the appeal of putting fake tweets/ posts in your fun fanfic but oh my god if three years later half of the images of the fake posts you spent time making show up like this
because the file isnt supported anymore or whatever (assuming the problem is along those lines bc it doesnt matter how good my internet connection is or what browser im using) uhhhhh idk itβs very hard to read

Gonna be honest a lot of people deep down view cheating as worse than abuse which is why so many people view downright controlling and manipulative behavior in a relationship as 100% permissible so long as that behavior is centered around either preventing or discovering cheating.
my 2 favourite reviews of the brick from the past month
somehow makes it sound like this 1,400-page epic historical novel is a bland self-help book ("practical"?)
honestly, contender for funniest sentence of all time: "it feels as though the author has no definite opinion on politics, religion, or even the central plot of the story."
VICTOR HUGO???
NO OPINION?
bonus runner-up, because i like how it makes it sound like javert is the one droning on about the sewers:
Aang having the privilege of growing up with airbenders all around him and learning airbending straight from the monks in his temple but having to live the rest of his life as the last air nomad with no one to share his culture with.
Vs
Katara having the privilege of still having her people and culture but not ever being able to learn southern waterbending style because she never met another southern waterbender and only knowing the northern way of fighting and also having to grow up quicker.
Aang wishes he has the community Katara has and Katara wishes she had a childhood Aang had.

americans are sooo desensitized to guns and sometimes it manifests in ways that affect your media literacy. like remember in the first episode of sherlock when john watson opens up his drawer and you see a gun in there and youre supposed to understand that this is narratively significant and conveys his suicidality as well as his willingness to skirt rules and laws but the first time i watched it i was like oh well theres his desk gun. lots of people have those

Oh my god, you can choose up to two from each category:
HOW CAN I NARROW THIS DOWN
With the whole "Markiplier making his own DVD copies of Iron Lung to sell" thing, it's been fascinating and slightly concerning how many people seem to genuinely believe that if a physical release isn't coming from a giant corporation, it must automatically be a bootleg.
Look at me.
Look me directly in the eyes while I say this.
You can just make things.
You can simply create something and put it into the world.
That's allowed.
People have been doing it for centuries.
They sell blank VHS tapes. They sell blank DVDs. Blank CDs. You can buy flash drives by the bucketful if you really want to. If you create a movie, an album, a game, a documentary, or a four-hour video essay about the mating habits of fictional space goblins, you are entirely permitted to put that thing on physical media and sell it.
That is not piracy.
Piracy is taking something that belongs to someone else and reproducing or distributing it without permission.
If I buy a DVD of a movie, I own that copy of the movie. I do not own the movie itself. I didn't acquire the rights to duplicate it, press a thousand copies, and start selling them out of my garage like I've become the regional distributor for Warner Bros.
The copyright, distribution rights, and intellectual property still belong to whoever created it or whoever legally acquired those rights.
If I start burning copies of Iron Lung and selling them myself without Markiplier's permission, that's piracy.
If Markiplier, who made and owns the rights to Iron Lung, burns copies and sells them himself, that's just distribution.
He's the rights holder.
He's distributing his own work.
If you made it, if it came from your own mind, your own work, your own time, your own resources, then congratulations. You own the thing. You don't need a corporation to bless it with legitimacy.
The corporation is not what makes it real.
The fact that it exists is what makes it real.
I think we've accidentally spent so many years living inside a world dominated by mass-produced media that some people have developed the strange assumption that all media emerges from a factory somewhere. As if films naturally occur in shrink-wrapped plastic cases and descend from the heavens aboard a pallet truck.
But independent artists have been burning discs, dubbing tapes, printing books, pressing records, and mailing things directly to people for longer than many of us have been alive.
That's not a bootleg.
That's just a product.
It's not "bootleg."
It's just... leg.
The normal kind.
The original, free-range, locally sourced leg.
Another literary magazine gripe: Dear God don't oblige people to give you their pronouns
Like say 'feel free to include your pronouns in your cover letter' sure! 'your cover letter must include your pronouns' π ββοΈπ ββοΈπ ββοΈ friend you have not thought this through.
It is a similar issue to when they ask for a photo up front I think. Like no matter how well intentioned you are there's an obvious opening for discrimination. & You don't have to be consciously prejudiced to discriminate.
Also like with photos I do get it bcos obviously they want to publish author photographs in the magazine and don't want to be chasing them down (many magazines ask for your bio up front for this reason) but with pronouns it's like what do you need them for so badly?
Also literally what is stopping them from taking the way better, way easier, and more effective route of asking for data that could open them up to a discrimination lawsuit after they have made their hiring decisions?????
Every study I've seen has shown that the number one easiest most effective way to avoid racial discrimination in hiring is to blank out the candidate's names on their resume
If literary magazines actually want to fix racism or transphobia in publishing or the literary scene, they need to not require people give them information that will blatantly and unavoidably force many, many job candidates to reveal themselves as part of legally protected classes!!!
(aka: it's harder to reject a submission because someone is Black if you are given no information that could indicate their race besides the contents of their submission. every study shows you can't just Decide to Not Be Racist, that's not how prejudice works, as a great many people of color can tell you. whyyyyyyyy would we want to ask for more identity / physical appearance information as part of the hiring process we're trying to make LESS racist. etc. other bigotries. WHY)
I imagine the issue is that they don't want to have authors taking their money and then ghosting them when asked to provide an author bio & photo to go with their work, so from their perspective it's easier to just get everything they might be going to publish at once.
However: they just gotta suck it up and deal with it!!
Some points of information on this:
Alas name on manuscript remains the industry standard so while not ideal it is professional. Photos or pronouns upfront is not a professional standard so no excuse.
It's common to ask for a third person bio up front but other than your name (which you are giving anyway) there's no mandatory information in a bio. This is primarily a space for talking about your writing. Some people do opt to disclose protected characteristics but you absolutely don't have to.
Paid markets do need your legal name so they can pay you but the publication contract should stipulate what name you're to be published under and they should never ever be publicising anyone's legal name without permission.*
*(This did actually happen to me once but fortunately on a document I got to review before publication)
#frankly I dont think author photos are necessary at all#I donβt want an author photo on anything I publish#why is my face relevant.
yeah im not a huge fan of them either. if magazines really wanna have them i think they should explicitly allow you to submit whatever picture you want to represent yourself provided you have the rights to let them publish it.
platforms punishing users (eg removing icons on Tumblr) for not safe for work content or hiding posts behind id or facial rec walls (bluesky and discord now ig) makes for an interesting incentive to just never tag or provide warnings on any media you post with adult themes

People are unfazed if you hate women but if you dislike dogs they assume you're a bad person
I really love the wilderness years of Doctor Who. I think from now on when shows get canceled more companies should throw their content to the wolves and watch in horror as the starved fan base go insane and write like a thousand books in five years that irreversibly ruin any semblance of canon, and also make zero sense.
