so im trying to be a bit more articulate here but im not good at long wordy essays or anything but the welcome to the internet transvestite comic is a comic i haven't seen many talk about since it was posted. i also only did one small post about it and stopped talking about it so im a part of that group. but i do have my issues with it. for one, the use of the word transvestite made me pause a little, i understand that some trans people reclaim the word for themselves but it's an old very medicalized and outdated term that has been used in a derogatory way for decades, i still believe it can be fairly loaded, and the fact that creator is a tme using this term to describe someone who is tma is in my opinion very loaded. then the contents of the comic, it starts off with telling the reader that the protagonist watches gore. what purpose does that serve? it's not just a random character detail, like itâs meant to paint her as a certain type of person. itâs a stereotypical "edgy teen boy" activity and something coded as "malebrained" or "male-socialized." i know that obviously watching gore is something women and girls have the ability to do, but socially it's portrayed as an edgy and immoral teen boy activity or immoral gross mentally ill male thing. it just rubs me the wrong way. like it's signal to the audience that the protagonist is mentally ill and not normal.
but for most of the comic she suffers, she suffers a lot. like i said in my original post, it feels like torture porn. this trans girl egg is starting to discover herself and faces a lot of humiliation, degradation, insult, threats, she harms herself. and i can't help but feel like it's presented in a bit of a fetishistic way. she enjoys being humiliated and hurt and hurting herself because, "if she can't be a woman at least she can be abused like one," that's literally a line from the comic. it really felt like it's just enforcing the, gross chronically online 4chaner that just has a fetish, stereotype. and the comic lingers on her suffering and the strange satisfaction and relief that she gets from it for a while. if a transfem in real life admitted to doing anything the character did in the comic, not just the general idea, but the dressing in her sister's clothes, taking on different woman personas online like the Facebook one, the having watched gore, sneaking into women's rooms, the self-harm for others and degradation by others on online and tgat she had gotten hits of gender euphoria from it, she'd be mocked, harassed by those in and out of the trans community, used as some example that the transphobic stereotypes are true, treated like a disgusting freak. but this gets to be some trans mans oc and story. and he gets to be nominated for an award and praised for it. i don't know if he actually got it, i just knew about the nomination. it's the pattern where our pain is treated as compelling, artful, romanticized, almost seen as like mystical sometimes, when viewed by outsiders and written about by outsiders. but if we make art and write about our struggles and traumas, then it's "too personal" or "too niche" or "too exclusive." it really just feels like we're allowed to be tragic figures and fetishized caricatures for the consumption of others, but not often allowed to represent ourselves and get listened to, much less get any praise or award for it.
