Resisting the urge to Um Actually this dragon novel because it has the dragon eggs be like three or four feet wide but there is simply a limit to how large hard-shelled terrestrial eggs can be. No matter how large the animal is, the embryo needs oxygen, and oxygen needs surface area. The larger an object is, the lower its surface area relative to volume, and the less oxygen the embryo can receive. We think of large animals as having porportionately large young because mammalian pregnancy has the unique benefit of allowing for the size of the young to scale with the adult because their oxygen is provided directly through the placenta, and almost all the megafauna remaining on Earth are mammals. But this is not the case for species which lay eggs! For fuck's sake even the sauropods hatched out of eggs barely larger than basketballs! Your hatchling dragon would be impressively enormous if it were the size of a house cat. Stop trying to make me believe that this (ROUND!) dragon egg somehow supplied enough oxygen to develop an infant the size of a large dog or even bigger. If it were possible the dinosaurs woulda been doing it!!!!
I love you /lh. Experts going off on their particular fascinating cool topics and adding unexpected context to things we take for granted is like my favorite thing this was delightful. Talk to me more about eggs and geometry and biology all you want :D
Amazing concept

HEADS UP: The U.S. Postal Service quietly changed how postmarks work.
Mail is no longer automatically postmarked with the date you drop it off. Instead, the postmark now reflects the date it’s first processed by an automated sorting facility — which can be days later.
If you mail something right at a deadline, the official postmark could be later than your drop-off date and may be considered late.
If mailing date matters to you, go inside the post office and request a hand-stamped postmark.
A new USPS postmark rule may cause property tax payments to look late even when people mail them on time. The change can create surprise lat
This will invalidate votes too
Okay this is gong to sound condescending on several levels but:
There's a kind of cliche about training a dog - that if you want it to always come when it's called, you should never scream at or punish it when it does. Even if you just spent twenty minutes getting increasingly panicked thinking it was dead in the woods! Even if it had been trampling through the neighbors garden! It is very important that it's direct association is 'stopping whatever super interesting thing I was doing to go back to human = being praised and rewarded'. If the association is instead being screamed at or punished, the dog will be less enthusiastic to stop whatever fun thing it's doing to run to that.
I feel like a great many people would noticably improve their own lives if they started applying the same logic to how they treated other humans.
As someone in behavior science, this is absolutely true, and very important!
When your learner doesn't know whether they'll get an aversive (uncomfortable/unpleasant) or appetitive (desirable, pleasant) consequence for performing a specific behavior, it creates stress and conflict, and often leads to the behavior breaking down.
In our industry this is known as a "Poisoned Cue." And it's the reason we generally recommend folks choosing a NEW cue when enrolling in a recall class!
Humans experience poisoned cues all the time. Imagine your mom texts you:
"Call me"
Nothing else, just the text. And your stomach drops.
But why? She might want to tell you she bought you tickets to your favorite concert, or that she wants to drop off some cookies! What reason would you have to assume you're in trouble? Because if even ONCE that kind of text resulted in a negative experience, THAT is what your mind will conjure up first. And that is why we want to be very careful NOT to accidentally mix reinforcement with punishment, especially for important behaviors like recall which we may need to use in situations regarding safety.
And there's scientific evidence to support it!
The purpose of this experiment was to compare the effects of combining negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement during teaching wit

Some libraries can even get you hooked up with social workers and local aid programs. The important thing is investigating what YOUR library can do for YOU.
i'll never not be drawn to the existential horror of angels as beings without free will, incapable of doubt or refusal, and how attempting to "free" them from that state which seems so unfairly cruel from our perspective necessarily requires destroying them on a fundamental level and condemning them to an eternity of suffering. how a halo is a perfect closed loop which interrupting would render no longer a halo but something else, irregular and jagged.
an angel is a beautiful terrifying horse that will break all of its legs attempting to comprehend nuance
sometimes I think about how rattlesnakes are starting to adapt to bite immediately instead of using their rattle as a warning, because this defense mechanism that says "im here! im frightened! don't come close or ill bite you" has instead ilicited a reaction of "oh fuck a rattlesnake, i should kill it"
so of course every snake that has the instinct to warn humans of its presence gets killed, and only the snakes that bite first and dont make themselves known get to survive. a human who's been bitten is too worried about his swelling ankle to decapitate a snake with a shovel.
it's a good example of how humans make the world more dangerous for ourselves by believing that we have mastery and ownership of it. we think we have the power and importance to control the life around us down to the snakes and insects, but every animal fights for life. and no animal thinks that any human is more important than it's own life.
Remember: an animal that is growling (or rattling in this case) likely does not want to hurt you. That's their "fuck off" warning, not their kill engine revving up.
I love Josh’s anti-classism so much. I grew up in a single parent household that didn’t have time/the ability to cook. I taught myself as an adult and ended up loving it. I cook with this stuff a lot. Shit, the RealLemon juice ends up in a lot of my cocktails. Sure, I like fancy ingredients when I can afford them and I have things I get picky about using - but I have bad hands, mincing garlic is painful as fuck. There’s a lot to be said for knowing how to work with what you have. Don’t shame people for trying, don’t shame people for feeding their families things that they enjoy.
if you are only a good cook if you have access to premium ingredients at whole foods or above prices then you arent really a good cook
I'm going to let you all in on a little secret. At the peak of Tastes of Tamriel, I was a university student for four and a half years, and operating on a student budget. Then I started working, and had money, but no time. I felt the pressure to keep churning out recipes because everyone loved them so much, but many weeks I couldn't afford or didn't have the time to get fresh ingredients.
So that minced garlic? Go ahead and use the squeezy tube stuff. Lemon juice? Concentrate from the bottle. Grated cheese? Go ahead and buy pre-shredded. That spinach you don't know if you'll use before it goes off? Buy it frozen.
Adapt. Overcome. Survive. Because regardless of where you are in life, you deserve good food. It is classist and ableist to assume that everyone can just cook a meal from scratch. These easy ingredients exist for a reason, and you shouldn't feel shame in using them, especially not with my recipes.
Stay safe, eat well, be kind. ~Tal
i'm sorry I just burst out laughing because WHAT????????

"Are you respecting boundaries out of love or punishment?" This is a video about respecting boundaries of estranged children without framing it as the pain of your abscence being the punishment for walking away from you and towards somewhere that feels safe.
People on tumblr loooove to talk about restorative justice and abolition when it’s a nebulous concept. It’s lovely to think about someone growing and changing and trying to reckon with the harm they caused but when some people actually see that person, they can’t handle it. God forbid someone says “I did something awful and I don’t want people to hurt others the way I did.” Do you just expect every shitty person to magically disappear from the earth? Do you want them to pretend it never happened?

Ive seen people be like in modern fantasy like "oh the pritagonists can just look up spells on their phone how do you solve that"
Imma be honest most people who go on recipe websites and book every recipe they see don't even use them lmao why would with be different
Given how terrible most recipe websites are i can only imagine how bad spell websites would be
Having to navigate someone's entire life story of how they became a witch in order to get to the part where they actually talk about the gods-damned banishing ritual
the number of 'easy 3 step spell to fly' that at best do nothing, and have a good chance of doing something very bad to you is non zero
Three words "BuzzFeed Spell Hacks"
five minute witchcrafts
Can not emphasize enough that there are IRL articles about spells and witchcraft that read like that. It would not be that much of a stretch to go full recipe blogger.

yeah yeah fire-based characters are destructive and angry and violent and evil blah blah blah BORING overdone. more fire as a lifegiver. warm and comforting. fire-based characters as guides lighting the way. personal heater in the cold and dark but don’t sleep too close or you’ll wake up with heat rash. fire sterilizes and cauterizes!! more fire-based healers. plants perking up and flowers turning towards them and they attract moths. fire-based characters who are hearths instead of wildfires!! the core of a home the pillar of a community the key to societal advancement. give them an internal flame that visibly glows and flickers instead of a heart that beats. extinguish that light when they die. etc
I love the word "partner"

the human mind is prone to catastrophizing when left unoccupied. And that’s why it’s important to always have a little Blorbo to rotate in your head. It acts as a protective charm of sorts to redirect your imagination away from harmful spirals
thoughts without Blorbo: oh my god I was so cringe in seventh grade why did I do that
thoughts with Blorbo: I haven’t considered the interactions with bleebus; I must rectify this immediately

if fighting fatphobia is not part of your politics i don't trust you.
we just can't fucking win. any positive video about us will be filled with these comments. you can watch a video of a fat athlete doing exercise that most people in these comments are not even physically capable of doing and yet all of them have the gall to say that this athlete will die in five years. we do not have the privilege of wrecking our bodies. people will say the most vile shit to us for daring to exist in their space. and no matter how much we yell, no one is listening. we're fucking tired. do something about it.
i don't think people really get how in the trenches fat activism is. you'll see on youtube tons of videos along the lines of "this activist died from being ob*se that means fat activism bad" actually. you are literally falling for the same shit the cdc said when it wanted to make ob*sity an epidemic. when skinny people die, we know what caused it. when fat people die, it's because they were fat. and that is why fat people shouldn't be respected. even though it has been proven time and time again that we die because doctors don't respect us enough to find a solution to our illnesses that doesn't involve weight loss. they want us to shrink and that is it. but no one cares. in fact, they want us dead. that's just how it is. they want us to die. and they want us to die from being fat. they don't care. they want us dead.
A huge chunk of people who supposedly "died from obesity" are people who died of a heart attack from the severe malnutrition caused by extreme diets, drugs like ozempic, and weight loss surgery(gastric bypass or band especially) that change how your stomach empties.
When you lose weight, the first thing to go is your muscles, not your fat, and guess what very important organ is a muscle? The heart. Ozempic, fasting, all that crap will eat at your muscles long before it burns any fat, and no, exercise* won't help, because you're still not getting the nutrients you need to keep your muscles going.
I'm not only speaking of scientific research, I'm also speaking from experience. I was on ozempic for several months back when I was diagnosed with insulin resistance, and I lost so much weight, so much that I felt I could ignore the fact that I was weaker than ever, the fact that my oral medications wouldn't work(some of which I need to Not Die), the fact that some days I could barely even keep water down. Eventually I couldn't keep going I was just too weak, so I stopped it, and I gained twice as much, I went from 100kg, to 80kg on ozempic, and now I'm 120kg. All of this could have been avoided if they'd not seen a far chick and decided losing weight was the only option, they never even put me on Metformin, I had to ask for that this year, 5 years after being diagnosed with insulin resistance.
I never got that muscle back because my rheumatoid arthritis has a lovely symptom known as exercise intolerance, where any exercise will basically leave me bedridden in agony or at the very least super fatigued.
That's another thing, they didn't catch my rheumatoid arthritis for years, they said to lose weight so your back doesn't hurt, and yeah, it helped my back, but that's because I have literal bone from my damaged sacrum rubbing up against flesh in a way it shouldn't, damage that could have been avoided if again they didn't see me as just a fat woman.
I need to lose weight, but I only intend to go back down to 100kg, just enough for my back to feel better, and not too heavy for lightweight mobility scooters, and it's gonna be so hard because of my IR to lose that weight that I wouldn't have needed to lose if I'd stayed at 100kg originally and been properly diagnosed with Pointy Bone Disease.
thank you for all your responses thus far. i'm glad to have read all your stories and experiences. but i want to highlight these tags in particular. (from @mouseratz )
i didn't really get into it the first time around but this is so important. you cannot fight fatphobia without feminism. women routinely have their health complaints downplayed. being a fat woman makes it worse. you cannot fight fatphobia unless you are anti-racist. for fat people of colour, the rate of medical neglect is much higher, compounded by racism in the medical field. (also, bmi is racist in its very conception.) you cannot fight fatphobia unless you are for disability activism. just like fat people, disabled people unfortunately have to be their own advocates, and it should not be this way. you cannot fight fatphobia unless you recognise classism. poor people do not have the privilege of affording doctors and specialists who may be out-of-network and so their options for finding good doctors are limited.
fatphobia is a class issue, it affects women, it affects people of colour, and it is in fact a disability issue. you cannot fight for one and neglect the others. all these ideals are connected.
[image description: screenshot of tumblr tags which say "annnd that is why I also think it is important that fat lib & disability activism should be together as well. #fatness is viewed as a sickness/a group of 'unwell' people who need to either get well or go away from public life #it is such a similar idea and concept. And often fat people are disabled or become disabled due to stress & medical neglect #and in general leftist ideas are all very connected.....as fatphobia has roots in racism classism and misogyny too. #you should just care because fat people's lives are important. but none of these issues exist in a vacuum. #understanding how its connected gives you a better idea of why any of these things happen other than cruelty. ]
