#elaborating more on why this quote stuck out to me #martel is the foremost historian on european war more or less. like anywhere #especially wwi #and his tone though the book is as matter-of-fact and professional as anything #he never strays from his topic #and he's very particular in the first and last chapter that he is /not/ trying to determine the underlying "causes of wwi #because not only is that overresearched but one can also make a point about literally anything being a “cause”#and it's too broad of a category etc #and as happens in (well-written) nonfiction when reading you forget he's there #and then we get to these paragraphs #which show to me just how much he loves his field. how many students he's taught. how he personally feels about the “causes”#and there's this resentment. this spite. towards everyone working toward what is so thoroughly Not The Point to him #this very abrupt “this is wrong.”#and the sort of resentment toward everyone involved in “war was not inevitable”#(because this was the excuse used by so many of the men responsible! and he sees students falling for that propaganda!)#and reading this was so personal to me. it felt like I was talking to him rather than listening to a lecture he was giving #sisiposting

I had the opposite perception of the frog brothers in the lost boys musical, tbh. I walked out of the theater feeling vaguely emotional about getting to see a realistic depiction of a 14yo transmasc kid in the 80s, which isn't the kind of media that I grew up with

this is valid, but the fact that all of the "humor" of the character was based on "look! she SAYS she's a BOY but she's ACTUALLY a GIRL!!!!! isn't that FUNNY?!?!?!? isn't that FUCKING HILARIOUS?!?!?!?!?!?!" is undeniably transphobic. that is Not who I was or am, and to know that that was how the writers viewed me, as not a guy but a girl "pretending" to be a boy who gets "unreasonably defensive" when any of it is pointed out really alienated me. i would have been fine if the character had been left alone, but seeing it warped for "diversity" in what was quite literally the worst way really showed me how the writers actually felt about me. ignoring that, the jokes also weren't funny.

like you can read the character that way but it wasn't a deep dive into what it was actually like to live like this. the show didn't say the character was transmasc, in fact the opposite. I could tell from every moment the character was onstage that the writers genuinely believed that people like me, people who have been climbing an uphill battle about being perceived correctly literally at all, were funny. we're hilarious because it was so blatantly untrue. so to me, pretending/treating the character as if they're a depiction of what they're making fun of hasn't worked, especially when I can tell how disgusting the thought process behind the writing was.
