i have a weird appreciation for Baroque artists, in particular Francois Boucher and Peter Paul Rubens, for depicting the human body in lush detail at a time that predates the standards for bodies to be thin and airbrushed with no wrinkles or cellulite

the cultural context of these is fascinating, because (I'm simplifying a complicated thing here but for the sake of not making this a novel) at the time wealth was to be well-fed. goddesses would never want for food; their bodies represent their freedom from the anxiety of whether or not they have enough food. and now wealth is to be able to afford a personal trainer and cosmetic surgery and a chef or meal service (and time to prepare meals), so our standard of beauty is based in being thin. in the 50s and 60s, it was based on your wife not having to work, so she would be able to ~maintain her figure. standards of beauty always come back to wealth.
