Do you ever wonder about how an author would describe you in a novel? Not only your appearance but the way you talk and laugh and hold yourself and all the expressions on your face?
itās not about that i know how to do laundry. itās that when i was four i knew how to fold clothes; small hands working alongside my mother, while my older brother sat and played with his toys. itās that i know what kind of detergent works but my father guesses. itās that in my freshman year of college i had a line of boys who needed me to show them how to use the machine. itās that the first door they knocked on belonged to me. itās that they expected me to know.
itās not that i know how to cook. itās that the biggest christmas present i got was a little plastic kitchenette i never used except to climb on. itās that my brother used it more, his hands ghosting over pink buttons and yellow dials. itās that when my work needs cake for a birthday, they turn to me. i get it from costco. i donāt even like cooking. a boy burns popcorn in the dorm microwave and laughs. a week later, i do the same thing, and he snorts at me,Ā ājust crossed you off my wife list.ā itās that i had heard something like this so many times before that i laughed, too.
itās not that i donāt love being feminine. itās that i came home with bruises from trying to be a trick rider on my bike and heard the wordĀ ātomboy,ā felt my little mouth say,Ā ābut iām not a boy, iām a girlā. itās that they laughed. itās that until i was sitting in my pretty dress and smiling with a big pretty smile and blinking my big pretty eyes, i wasnāt given back the titleĀ āgirlā. itās that until i wore makeup and styled my hair i was bullied; itās that when i donāt wear makeup iām a slob, that my mental health diagnosis hangs on the hook of being dressed up. itās that my therapist sees me returning to bright red lipstick and tells me i am looking happier and i have to explain that i am more sad than i have ever been. itās that i dress myself in as many layers as i can every time i ride a train because itās better to be laughed at than harassed.Ā
itās not that i know how to clean, itās that my brotherās chores were outside where i wanted to be, and mine were inside. itās that i would have weeded the garden better than he did if they had just let me. itās that i am put in charge of fixing otherās messes, expected to comply without complaint.
itās not that i canāt open the jar. itās that you ask my brother first every time. itās that i am pushed into docile positions, trained to believe that my body when itās strong and healthy is ugly, trained into being less, weaker. itās that the jar is also science, is also engineering, is also every job, every opportunity. itās that you laugh faster when he tells a joke, that you take him seriously but wave off me, that when he raises his voice heās assertive but when i do iām hysterical. the jar is getting into a car with a stranger as a driver and wondering if this is our last ride. the jar is knowing that if something happens to us, itās our fault.Ā
itās that iām weak and i donāt know if itās because i just am or i was trained to be. itās that we need to sit pretty with our pretty smiles and our pretty words trapped pretty and silent in our throats, our hands restless but pretty when idle, our bodies vessels for nothing but a future white dress. itās that we are taught someone else needs to open the jar for us.
hereās the secret: run metal lids under hot water, theyāll expand faster than the glass theyāre around. hereās the secret: when you keep us under hot water, we do more than boil. we expand over our edges. and we learn how to open our mouths, our claws, our screams hanging in kites over cities. just give me a chance. give me a chance when i am four when i am seven when i am twenty-three. i promise i can be amazing. give me the jar. iāll show you something.
boss fight
This guy is clearly a robot. No human could do this.
This is one of the most amazing things Iāve ever seen.
I have decided that I will reblog this every time it comes across my dash because it makes me laugh until I think Iām going to puke.

I like this articleĀ from The Economist about how het couples who have sons are more likely to stay together than those who have daughters, and the way fathers think of their sons vs. their daughters, because it basically provides confirmation and statistics for stuff we all notice anecdotally.
Gordon Dahl at the University of California, San Diego and Enrico Moretti at the University of California, Berkeley noticed more than a decade ago that men are more likely to marry, and stay married to, women who bore them sons rather than daughters. In an analysis of American census data, they found that men were more inclined to propose to their partners if they discovered that a baby in utero was a boy, and they were less prone to getting a divorce if the first child was a boy rather than a girl. In the event of divorce, men with sons were more likely to get custody [ie to ask for custody], and women with daughters were less likely to remarry. [ā¦]Ā This effect can be seen in data on households across a number of rich countries, which show that adolescent boys are more likely than girls to live with both biological parents.
Highlights:
āResults from the most recent poll, in 2011, were startlingly similar to those from the first [from the 1940s]: Americans said they favour boys over girls by a margin of 12 percentage points. This preference is driven mainly by men; women are largely agnostic.ā
āMothers usually lavish the same amount of time on their sons and daughters, at least when they are younger, whereas fathers devote more to sons from the get-go.ā A study found that āfathers were twice as likely to take paternity leave for a son than a daughterā, and āmarried fathers with a child between six and 12 years old spent nearly 40 more minutes per day with sons than with daughters. In married families with two children of the same sex, fathers with sons spent between 22 and 27 minutes more per day on child care, and said they had less leisure time than those with daughters.ā
āThis extra help has a measurable impact on the quality of a marriage. When Giuliano delved into the reasons why more couples with a son stayed together after three years than those with a daughter, she found that fathers of boys were not only more likely to say they were excited to become a parent, but also more helpful around the home. Mothers of boys, in turn, were more likely to praise their husbands as fathers, and were happier in their relationships than those with only girls.ā
āSons also seem to push fathers to be more productive. Studies of Americans and Germans born after 1950 found that having a child of either sex spurred fathers to bring home more bacon, but the difference between a son and a daughter was considerable: nearly 110 hours a year for Germans and around 70 hours for Americansā, which suggests that fathers are ākeener to provide for families with sons. Parents of sons seem not just to earn more but also to spend more. An analysis of American consumer expenditure data from the 1990s found that married couples with one son aged 18 or younger spent 4-7% more on housing than those with a daughter, and consumed more of everything from plane tickets to meals in restaurants. Intriguingly, families with sons also spent more on āwomenās goodsā such as jewellery and personal services (eg, manicures and hair salons), indicating that mothers benefit when there is a boy around.ā
āMen are much more gendered in their behaviour, and in their expectations of the behaviour of their kids, than women areā
A dad saying āIāve taken my daughter to ballgames, but she doesnāt really know the difference between basketball and baseball. If she was a boy, I have this feeling that it wouldāve been easier to interest her in those things.ā
Another dad saying men want a son so they can have a friend because men are incapable of making friends? and women canāt read the newspaper over breakfast? (āThe possibility of shaping [my sonās] preferences to match mine is attractive. Itās why we play sports together, why we read together. Iām already envisioning trying to get him to read the newspaper over breakfast. I think that thereās a very significant desire for friendship thatās heightened for fathers with sons given how few other outlets we have to create friendships.ā)
One man was relieved to have a daughter because having a son would have made him nervous about having to āconstantly prove his masculinity around himā men are honestly such a joke
A mum saying āI have two daughters. When I asked my husband if he thinks this made a difference in how much he helped out, he said, āYeah, I probably would feel more of a sense of responsibility if we had a son.ā It actually hadnāt even occurred to me before.ā
when you come home from school and your mom ate all the cake š
You can tell they have a great relationshipĀ
